I bought probably 20 different wordpress themes and frameworks that claim they can do everything they want. You download them and then try to figure out what the hell does what. Usually the documentation sucks. Partly why I use the 2012 wordpress stock theme and modified it to my liking.

Recently for a project I was looking for a theme that had more features and in themeforest (my goto) I can across this theme called X.

This theme takes a really different approach.

Here are some of the key features:

  • STACKS – Instead of just ONE design, X comes with something they call Stacks. Think of them like completely unique designs that can be changed with just the click of a mouse. There are currently four with more on the way.
  • CUSTOMIZER – Remember the days when you would work with an “admin panel”in a WordPress Theme? Not anymore thanks to X. They have instead built upon core WordPress functionality by turning the Customizer into an incredible tool that let’s you LIVE PREVIEW all changes you make while not affecting the visitors on your site. Once you are happy with the configurations, simply hit save and publish and you’re done!
  • BUILT BY EXPERTS – The Themeco folks were smart enough to realize that they weren’t smart enough on their own 🙂 While they have years of experience in Internet Marketing, they decided to go out to some of the brightest names in Internet Marketing to get their feedback on the development of X. Many of these experts shared some of their best tips and techniques that were then built into the theme and training material.

I could go on and on, but the sales and reputation of X and Themeco speak for themselves. Go ahead, Google them. This is not just marketing hype…people actually LOVE this theme so much so that they are being used on sites ranging from .COM – .GOV. That’s right, X is being used by the government, and you can see a live example of how it looks below.

All this sounds great, but you really have to see it for yourself to understand why it is being called the ultimate WordPress theme and quite possibly the last WordPress theme you’ll ever have to buy.

You can see more at their main site - http://theme.co/x/

This will give you a little more info on the features in X as well as the over 30 DEMOS they put together to show you what is possible in X.  The flexibility of this theme is really amazing.

Their support team is also quite literally the best in the business. Hands down. With a staff that is all over the globe, the Themeco developers are happy to help with theme related questions in their thriving community and member forums.

  1. Jeremy, thank you for sharing my site as an example of the flexibility of X Theme!
I can say with all certainty that X is the only theme I’ll be using for all my future web design projects.
    Cheers!

  2. This looks like a great theme, glad you posted about it. I’ve used lots of different ones too and am using a modified WordPress 2014 one now for similar reasons to you. I will say, though, that the customizer with live preview is not a feature of X, but rather WordPress. It looks like X hooks it to add unique stuff, but that is out of box WordPress functionality. Looks like a great option either way though.

    1. I have used Thesis a lot, both v1 and v2. And by a lot, I mean I have customized it quite a bit for various installs, not just installed and called it a day.

Thesis is fast and lightweight. It’s good with SEO and in general is a nice theme. If you want to skin it you have two options: 1) Do it yourself or 2) turn to the community. In my experience the community is lacking, even more so with v2. Option #1 isn’t so great either b/c it’s a pain to work with. To get the looks I wanted, it would have been as easy to work with the default theme (like I did for my site).

In my opinion, when Thesis v1 came out it was great. You had all these hooks and cools stuff that no one else had. Now WordPress’ default setup has a ton of that stuff, plus the customizer. Now the extra value Thesis once brought isn’t so special anymore. Plus you have things like Genesis and this X theme, as well as a more sophisticated theme community (and better out of the box WordPress stuff) in general, and Thesis doesn’t seem to offer as much in comparison anymore.

But the biggest thing that gets me with Thesis is it’s positioning. It’s sold as if it’s easy for anyone to setup and customize (for $79 last I checked), but then non-developer people quickly learn that to make their layout look unique is way to hard for them. I think if you’re a developer and you want to specialize on one theme, then Thesis works b/c you can build a repository of tools and know a common framework to jumpstart development. Although as a dev, Thesis can be kind of limited in those cases when you want to do truly custom stuff. So, let me say that differently, if you’re a mid-level developer and you want a way to standardize on one framework to jumpstart dev, Thesis is great.

However, if you are an end user or novice, Thesis simply doesn’t offer enough skins out of the box (or even for purchase), nor the ability to customize them easily, that it’s worth it. There are simply better options. If Thesis would raise the bar on what is included (for a fairly decent price, mind you) and add easier ways to customize their skin, then it could compete. However, it took years to get v2 out and I think the market passed them by. Maybe they are working on v3 and it will level up, but they’ll need to do it at a quicker pace than v2. Or they need to jumpstart the ecosystem somehow.

tl;dr: I’d look elsewhere than Thesis right now.

  3. Hi Jeremy,

“Theme” has always been one of my most important problems. Sometimes I have spent lots of time in customizing a theme, and it finally has not become what I wanted. My frustration in this, caused me to design and develop my own themes. They worked, but I spent lots of time on it.

Thanks to you for sharing the X theme with us genuinely and sincerely. You are great.

  4. Hey Jeremy, Thanks for the shoutout to our new site built with X (www.adwordacademy.com)

We definitely love the theme, and it’s far and away the best theme we’ve ever used. Endlessly customizable and infinitely flexible.

  5. I agree, its still some work to invest into the wordpress site. But to be honest, it is much easier with a good support, which is also provided by the makers of the X Theme and nice tutorials. Still if you need to be ready to invest several weeks into the adaption process. Other people watch television, read newspaper, you can watch wordpress tutorials and read step-by-step guides.

The makers of the X Theme managed to include many great plugins and tools like the revolution slider, the visual composer and shortcodes, which help to give you more freedom in creating ways to present your content.

  6. Hi Jeremy,

This theme looks really nice and flexible. We mostly create custom themes, starting from our own base theme at Mediasoft, but after seeing the flexibility of this X theme and all the possibilities in layout and modules, we will definitely consider in using this theme as a base theme for our projects now.

Thanks for sharing!! You now have a new follower 😉

  7. Thanks for the info Shoe. I’ve been putting up WP sites for years and haven’t found a good low cost theme that is flexible enough for me. I also don’t have the time to screw with code changes, this looks like something I’ll give a shot. Seems to have more tools than the Studiopress stuff I’ve been using.

  10. Hey there, thanks for the link to my site! I’m good friends with the creators of X and truly believe it’s the best theme out there as well (and I’ve used a ton).
