Grab Some Weed, I Got A Story To Tell

As you probably know I am a huge fan of the Notorious BIG. And if you don't know... now you know.. anyway one of my favorite songs by him is called "I got a story to tell". In the beginning Biggie takes us play by play through a crazy night where he was having relations with a young lady in her boyfriends house (who played for the New York Knicks). While doing the dirty the boyfriend came home and surprised them.... The story goes on for a while then he calls his boys up half way through the song and tells them "Bring some weed, I got a story to tell". When they arrive he tells the story of what happened to him all gangsta/ebonics out. Only of course he doesn't tell it exactly how it happened but more touches on the highlights and how it relates to his homies. The song really got me thinking the other day. We are all telling stories. And the most successful marketers I know are not only good story tellers but very dynamic story tellers. They change the focus of their story depending on who they are talking to on the internet. They do this through demographic and geotargeting. They build custom pages (stories) for each age group, language, sex, and so on. A lot of people forget not only how important their products story is but also how that story is told. Did you know the crockpot was tried many times and failed until finally the right story was told? Did you know 8 other companies including eBay were doing contextual eBay listing ad networks when we launched AuctionAds? Why did the Crockpot and AuctionAds succeed where many others failed with virtually the same product? I can't speak for the crockpot but I would like to think I told a great story ;) So what story is your company telling? If your answer is that you dont have one you could not be more wrong. Every company is telling a story.
