One thing I find more amazing then making money from websites with contextual advertising is breaking down the market trends and inside mechanics as to why a site increased. Now I am not a person who checks AdSense statistics often but towards the end of last month when I saw a decent 6 figure amount where normally a upper 5 figure amount is I was naturally intrigued. I noticed that 1 huge company was putting up there ads from the hours of 6am to 12pm ONLY but when these ads were showing on my website there was a huge increase in revenue.

I talked to my Prem account rep and they said this was the result of a targeted TOD cpm campaign. After doing some research I found out that TOD is Time Of Day Advertising . Basically this (I will call it huge company) huge company had setup something with AdWords so it only showed there ads at these specified times.

Now there was a reason this company was doing this OBVIOUSLY. They have tons to spend on marketing research. Certainly more then the ShoeMoney Marketing Division!

So I started thinking if this company thinks its worth it to dump hundreds of thousands of dollars for 1 month of advertising between 6am and 12pm for widget product on my website, why don’t I find that same product on amazon.com, use my affiliate link and see what happens for the same hours?

I will find out soon…

Please note:

In order to comply with all TOS I do not name websites that I advertise on as well as any direct figures from cpc cpm or other specifics that would find me in contempt of a TOS.

  1. During the morning hours buying potential increases and ROI’s look better simply because the demographics are of the much older crowd. These are the stay at home moms, the surfers at work, etc. The kids aren’t on the net fucking around clicking on random banner ads and screwing with stats. At least, that’s my guess 🙂

  2. I am currently thinking through how I should address geographic issues on my sites. I do have some advertisements that are US specific but I do get a big amount of traffic from India and Europe. I plan on doing some geo coding to show geo specific ads. The TOD campaign would be a good way to limit ads from being seen during high traffic times in other regions.
