Full Disclosure – Assume The Position

When I see Adam Sandler pimp Popeye’s Chicken or Subway I assume he is getting paid for it.

When I watch The Office, Heroes, Lost or any other tv show and see product placements I assume they are getting paid for it.

When I read an affiliate marketers blog and I see links to anything I assume they get paid for it.

In fact every time I see a blog post or basically anything including conversation I assume someone is benefiting from mentioning the product they are talking about. Even if they are not paid directly for reviewing or mentioning the product directly I assume they are hoping the users find the information useful or maybe even the product owner will see the review and pay them in the form of mentioning them back or advertising on there site.

The world is about kickbacks. Maybe my mindset is just jaded from my experiences and exposure.

So basically my disclosure policy is you should assume I am getting paid for or will get paid for anything I ever mention. To be perfectly honest with you almost every advertiser I have is because I mentioned them then they contacted me after the fact because they liked the traffic they received from being mentioned.

I think these blogger disclosure policies while noble and all that good stuff are extremely silly. Everyone gets paid one way or another.

External Site Auditing Tools – TFS 7

A lot of times when you want to buy a site you kind of have to trust the user is giving you proper stats. Really you need to do some homework on your own. Here are some of the tools that I use.

Seo Digger SeoDigger is a nice tool that you can put a url into and it will show you not only what keywords that url ranks for organically but also the wordtracker positions and overture volume as well (Yahoo searches per month). I always am pretty amazed at even the longtail rankings they show on SeoDigger. You can see the rankings for one of our ringtone communities at SeoDigger Here You can also alternate between Google and MSN listings.

Firefox The people who make SeoDigger also make some other tools like the popular firefox extension SEO Quake but to be honest I like Search Status the best for firefox SEO plugins. Search status shows me the Alexa, Compete, and Google PR for any site I am browsing. Nice tool to have. Aaron Wall has a firefox extension called Seo Firefox. Its pretty dope and shows you the actual information in serps results for sites. For instalnce you can see if a result has directory listings or edu backlinks… good stuff. I have Seo Firefox installed but I only turn it on when I want to use it. Great plugin none the less. When you want the data it gives you there is nothing like it IMO.

DNscoopDnscoop is a great resource to get instant “at your finger tips” information on a given url. It shows historical information on the page, Current Google PageRank (and if its valid), Traffic ranking from Alexa, indexed pages via Google-MSN-Yahoo-Alltheweb-Altavista, Link Value Report from Text-link-ads, and even a estimated worth of site.

Alexa Maybe people write off Alexa because of its inaccuracy’s but if you just know how to use it its actually pretty useful. Basically you just have to make sure your comparing apples to apples. For instance if you compare this site to fark.com you will see we have a much higher rating then fark.com. Obviously we do not get as many pageviews as fark but we do get more SEO related people so the numbers are a bit skewed. Now to use alexa effectively you could compare fark to slashdot or shoemoney to another blog that is talking about making money online.

External tools are key for knowing what a sites potential value could be and having the right ones can be real time savers. This is your ShoeMoney Tip For Success – 7

SMX And Affiliate Summit East Just Around The Corner

Unfortunately I am not going to be able to make the Search Marketing Expo and I am a bit pissed about it but I already had made prior plans before it was announced =(. I am sure it will kick ass though. It is June 4-5, 2007 at Seattle, WA. I keep thinking in the back of my head I might be able to go… I really want to. Maybe we can make something work.

Affiliate Summit East is going on in Miami, FL July 8-10 and I will be there. I am on the schedule as a speaker on monetizing community websites with Lee Dodd of Earners Forum.

Also speaking of Affiliate Summit and Earners Forum CPA Affiliates is having a contest to give away 10 expo passes to ASE. If you ever wanted to check out what the conference stuff was about this could be your ticket in.

I was really surprised at all the attendees at Affiliate Summit West. I am going to be doing a good conference comparison post soon.

Electronic Frontier Foundation Defends Bloggers Too

Recently people may have read where “someone” said they were going to sue me over some stuff I had said on this blog. Well I was presently surprised when a person from the Eff.org contacted me and offered there services if the person went through with there legal threats. I asked them if it was ok that I posted they contacted me and they said it was. I also asked them if they had a link to a page where bloggers might get more information about them and how to contact them if they are sued and they emailed me a link to a page on there site.

Official EFF Legal Guide For Bloggers

Also anyone with extra coin looking to donate to a worthy cause think about giving some cash to the EFF. I have been a member for a while and they really do a lot of good stuff.

Just for the record I have been threatened to be sued 9 times and have only ever actually gotten paperwork from 1 person and nothing ever came from that 1 person (was years ago). The best legal advice I can give anyone is just to be responsible and prepared to defend yourself and what you say should a lawsuit happen. Just because organizations exist to help people for free does not mean you can go nuts and make stuff up.

Know Your Faults – TFS 6

Ok I will contune this series a bit more…

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Most people try to leave there weaknesses in a closet. I think your weaknesses are as important as your strengths in that as long as you communicate them to the rest of your co-workers they can help you and likewise the reverse will happen.

My weaknesses would be the following:

Pride – I am very proud of the work that we do and I get overly upset at times when I see people unfairly cast a light on me projects we have worked our ass off on. I think this was probably my worst weakness years ago but being more public I have learned to let it go. You kind of start to pick and choose when you should care about someones opinion.

The biggest thing about not being able to get past your pride is you never learn from your mistakes. At one time I was so bad that when someone would critique my work my immediate repsonse would be to attack instead of actually look at what the person said and thank them for there feedback (which I try to do a lot more of now).

Temper - At times even by my closest friends I have been called a little volatile. It never gets to a physical level. I think this is a weakness I can almost write off. I have gotten much better at this then I was even 2 years ago. I think having a baby helps.

Self Discipline – Definitely my worst all time fault. I have a really hard time motivating myself to do things that I do not want to do. I guess this could also be selfish. I think I have come a long way on this one too from when I first got married and also brought other people into the company. When you are responsible for more then just yourself you learn self discipline if not for yourself for those who count on you. Even with that said I struggle with it. The best way I cope with it is I try to give myself a reward system. Like for instance I will be like ok after I finish this list of work then I will write cool code that will make me no money but will be fun as crap.

Patience - eek another tough one. I want stuff when I want it and I want it yesterday. Amazon prime is my weakness if they actually had a “send this yesterday” I would opt for that whatever it costs.

So ya I think its important to recognize your weaknesses and not be afraid of them. We are all who we are just try to make improvements one day at a time.

This has been your ShoeMoney TFS tip #6

Azoogle Refers, Adblockers, eBay Devcon, and Url Structure

Its been a bit since i did a Monday questions post. Sorry I got caught up. Keep them coming ;)

James Writes:

Would be interesting to know how much you personally make from az referrals, since I read that you have more referrals under you than anyone else. Blog about it, fill us in!

First you have to keep in mind that I do not think I have ever used my affiliate ID when linking out to Azoogle and most of the time in the past I have posted there direct phone number (even my reps number) so I probably do not get near the people I have actually referred. Reason mainly being is that AzoogleAds has always been a sponsor of the shoemoney blog since we started doing advertising and I kind of feel like that would be double dipping and dirty…

However to answer your question I have about 45 refers and consistently make between 400-500$ per month from them alone.

Pat Writes:

I have a topic for your Mondays question that I have been thinking
about…. What is the effect of AdBlocks on the Net Advertising
Market?

Here is a blog post I did on it from my view (on my new blog):

Good question Pat-

Here is my thoughts on adblocking software and plugins… people savy enough to install them are not clicking on ads. I mean thats as easy as I can put it. When you have to worry is when browsers come default blocking ads. THEN THE WORLD COMES TO A END!.

I really do not think that would happen though…. Microsoft is just getting into the online advertising world and Firefox’s biggest contributors are advertising companies. Not smart to bite the hand that feeds you!

Tye Writes:

Hi Jeremy

How’s things?

What would you do with a 2003 ringtone domain name? Content Site, Aff marketing, PPC marketing, white label site?

hmmm I am guessing your using 2003 as the year the domain was registered and if that assumption is correct I am guessing your asking what do you do with a domain that does well in serps for ringtone phrases?

If that is the case then I would try to build a content site. You will burn a site out pretty bad in serps if it has only affilaite links on it (in my experience).

Tanya writes:

Shoe I saw that you are giving a presentation on SEO at eBay devcon in boston next month? What made you choose SEO?

I was asked by eBay to give a presentation on SEO and I said that if I did it would not be a classic by the book presentation but rather one based purely on my experiences. Basically not a “webmaster guidelines for seo” but more here is what I did that worked and here is what I did that did not work. They were cool with that and so its on ;)

I can promise for those in attendence it will be kind of the alternative view to SEO (much like my contextual presentations).

Darcy Writes:

Hi Jeremy,

I have a sports card trading/community site that ranks well in google and I don’t want to screw that up.

For programming purposes, and the site’s current crappy navigation structure, I’m looking at possibly having to change from a .asp to a .aspx on the home page of my site.

Will this hurt my google page ranking?

My first question would be why do you need to change from asp to aspx. I am not a asp wizard but I am guessing you can tell the server to process asp pages like aspx ?

If you must switch over the url structure you need to be very delicate. Again I am not a asp ninja but in the unix world we use mod_rewrite to redirect old urls to point to the new ones. Maybe someone can point out a guide to the Microsoft IIS equiv to mod_rewrite.

Hope everyone is having a good memorial day!

Lost Season Finale, UFC 71, Taking Dr J Down

Busy last couple of days few things I wanted to catch up on.

1- on friday I defeated my wife, Dr Shoemoney in our 2nd “Shoemoney biathalon” (its supposed to be a triatholon but the damn pool is always closed when we do it. It was a very close race but my training paid off and in the end I was victorious. The first time we did it I could not even run 1/2 mile I had to walk the rest. This time I ran the full mile (first time in my life) and then rained baskets like I was at a carnival.

2- UFC 71 – I had mixed emotions on the main event. While I have partied with Chuck Liddel and he is a super cool guy in person ShoeMoney Media INC has business ties with Rampage Jacksons camp so business wise it was good for us that he won but I did not like to see Chuck lose. I thought Chris Leben sucked I dunno why that guy is in the ufc

The shocker of the night is the DJ from Omaha taking down the “Dean of Mean” how awesome was that…

3- Lost Season Finale – Holy crap how awesome was the lost season finale. I thought it was very well done.
