Back in October, a waitress who was bartending at the Cha Cha Lounge here in Seattle discovered something that I’m sure has happened to every server in the restaurant industry at some point or another: she got stiffed by a customer. Not only did the cheapskate patron opt out of leaving her a tip, he [...]

Thumbnail image for Knowing When to STFU

The Internet is a marvelous thing. Never before have people been given such an easy opportunity to be passive-aggressive whiners or completely unprofessional within such a public forum. As long as you can hide behind that glowing monitor of yours, anything goes, right? Well, not really. Sure, there are people in various professions who have [...]

Taking What You Want Requires Tenacious D

December 6, 2010
Thumbnail image for Taking What You Want Requires Tenacious D

By “taking what you want,” I don’t mean in a rapey Dexter season 5 villain sort of way, but rather when it comes to business success. Recently Shoe wrote about how growing up morbidly obese actually contributed to his success as an Internet marketer, and Lisa Barone followed up with the story of how she [...]

The Fall of Cooks Source Magazine and the Slippery Slope of Scandals

November 22, 2010
Thumbnail image for The Fall of Cooks Source Magazine and the Slippery Slope of Scandals

A couple weeks ago, I wrote about how a small business called Cooks Source Magazine plagiarized a woman’s article and, instead of apologizing to her, insisted that everyone steals content from the Internet and said that she should pay them money for bringing some exposure to her piece. An Internet backlash of epic proportions ensued, with irate people contacting the magazine’s advertisers, sending disgusted emails to the editor, and leaving exceptionally negative comments on the brand’s Facebook wall. Shortly after I published my post, Shoe wrote a piece called “Do You Need a Scandal?” and talked about how sometimes controversy can boost your business or image into the next level, and that there’s no such thing as bad press. I partially agree with him, but, as always, it’s all about execution.

March 7, 2006

I remember one time Matt Cutts talking about the user experience… about how they were focused on delivering what they think the user would find.
