Why I am not getting the iPhone (but why it makes sense for Apple)

Why I am not getting the new iPhone 5 is pure and simple. The charging connector. With the iPhone 5 apple has moved to a smaller square reversible connector and gotten away from what they have been using for the first 7? iPhone versions. Not to mention its the same charger that also works on iPads. This is a HUGE negative for me:

  • I currently have a nice iHome dual alarm clock/dock in my bedroom which has a dock for the iPhone. It fits perfect even with the lights off.
  • I have a iHome radio in my bathroom that has a dock for my iPhone.
  • I have a “boom” box outside near my pool with an iPhone dock.
  • I LOVE that almost every hotel now has a clock radio with an iPhone dock.

The positives of the new iPhone:

  • Bigger screen. Bigger phone.
  • Slightly faster chip (they don’t even quantify how much faster)
  • New earbuds.
  • LTE connectivity.

That is the just of it. To be honest the bigger phone to me is a negative. I have seen people with the Samsung Galaxy phones and its big for me.

Also I use Beats by Dre and don’t care at all for the in ear headphones.

The biggest new feature that I like is that I would now be on the Verizon LTE network.

So thats the good and the bad IMO.

That my and why I am not getting it.

With that said I think it was a really good move for apple. The new charging connector is pretty slick and allows them to put the headphone jack on the bottom.

Also they will NO DOUBT make a killing off of this. Lets forget about the new phone… everyone who makes a 3rd party accessory now has to get a new licensing agreement from apple.

Apple also will be selling adapters so the old connector will work with the new. Its not very practical for me but I think they will sell a ton of these.

Same here. We have about a dozen gadgets in our house that have the old style connectors, wife and I have our 4s phones and the kids each have their ipod touch and they all work with every gadget. We have four of the iHome boxes and various other things. I know there will be an adaptor, but it’s more trouble than it’s worth. And, I’d actually like a larger phone, it would be easier for my large, clumsy hands to hold onto.

Pretty much my thoughts as well. I also have a connector in my car that would need to be adapted to.

Over the years I have carefully arranged it so that I am never at any time more than three feed from an iPhone/iPad/iPod cable, because I got tired of looking for one when I needed it (and not finding it)

With iPhone 5, I’d just be trading looking for cables for looking for an adapter (at thirty bucks a pop!)

No thanks.

Even though I am not a fan of Apple, just because of th way they do business I am going to comment anyways.

Apple is very good at making money that is for sure. A new license agreement, new connectors and whatnot is going to be making millions for more than just Apple. I heard the iPhone 5 sale could move the nation GDP itself.

I think that you have good reasons not to get the new phone, but I think you left out the most important: You see the iPhone 5 as a MINOR upgrade from ANY device you currently have, even the iPhone 4S :)

Why didn’t this version of the iPhone come out 3 years ago?

It is a pain in the ass but if they weren’t going to change it this time they would have changed it on the next one, why delay the inevitable? Have you seen the new iPods? Doing the same thing.

Jeremy I have to disagree. Apple products are the best and that is why millions of people did what I did and pre-order my iphone 5 without ever holding one, why… because we all know Apple stands by its brand.

Yes, the charge connection is a disappointment but spending a few bucks on adapter will do the trick. If you weren’t a fan of apple I guess having a iHome dual alarm clock/dock, iHome radio and a boom box for your iphone doesn’t qualify you as a apple fan I dont know what does.

and you forgot to mention how cool Siri is now.

Millions of people blindly buying a product doesn’t make it the best brand… it makes it the brand with the most users that will blindly buy something whether it’s what they need or not. :^o

Using that logic, Windows is by far the most stable and secure operating system in the world because it’s what almost everyone uses and people will keep buying the next version whether it’s better/different or not.

I really don’t see the big hype in the new iPhone, but then again what else can they do really?

Let’s not forget – if you are an andorid fan – every new device you buy – you have to buy a new cable/charger.

Apple have just been great at keeping the same connect for so long. You can guarantee the new ipod/ipads/etc will start using the new smaller plug – and it will be all good again soon.

I think it’s actually time to make it LAW that all phones use micro usb. Make it a standard!

They had to make that move to a smaller dock connector some day, better they do it now,

I am not getting the new one because I am not due for an upgrade, and then by the time I reach my upgrade they will have come out with the newer iPhone with all the glitches fixed and all new ones to deal with. I love Apple products, they are far superior to all other products on the market, but the hype of getting the newest and latest “just because” is really getting obnoxious and for me losing the value in the brand name. You used to somewhat “cool and unique” if you had an iPhone or Apple product, not anymore. My 7 year old now has an iPod, and uses the iPad more than I do. Way to go Apple for being marketing geniuses!… and Siri still gives me the creeps!

monoprice will have the adapters for $5 in a matter of time so 5 devices will cost you $25 and you able to use everthing as is. put some more thought into the blog.

I was hoping for something more ‘magical’ considering that this was Steve Job’s last project.. Apple realized that Windows 8 buzz will be much louder all over the world than its iPhone 5. That’s why Apple moved the launch from October to September. Because if they launch in Oct, only 5% of people will hear it.

I’m also with you. I thought about going back from Android to iPhone with the iPhone 5 but I think I’m going to hold off for a bit, I also have accessories like you and I love that I can use connectors interchangeably between my ipads and ipod touch and other ipods. I’m not looking forward to the adapters and I’m not about to replace all my accessories so I’ll hold off for a while.

Why does it have to have a new charger! This blows

Is the back of the new iphone going to be like metal or something. I heard it was not going to be glass any more … that is a positive for me :)

So… now I have to travel with 3 chargers as if I do not have enough shit to remember when I am packing for a meeting

It comes with a conector to connect to the old 30 pin style. Also, the old kind was not reversible (trying to plug it in in the dark is a huge pain) and the old ones were some of the most complained about charging cords out there. This is a welcome change in my eyes.

Well I have to say I have ordered the new I phone 5. My 4 is 2 years old and due an upgrade, and is looking a bit battered to be honest. People buy apple products because we know they work well, and know just what they do. Having said that I used to find half the fun having a new phone was seeing what it did, you don’t really get that with the iPhone.

The adapter is the only thing that made me consider the Samsung s3. It will be a pain in the arse as I have so many charging stations. Hopefully someone will design an adapter to sit nicely in those.

Not getting it, I still have my iPhone 4. Still kicks ass, and does everything. Plus, my whole house is wired for it. Not to mention, the bugs are always in the first new model.

I am sticking with my iphone 5 as well, I have not reason to switch. Buying a new adapters for everything does not appeal to me either LOL.
