Geni.com – Free Shirt Friday

by Jeremy Schoemaker on December 31, 2010 · 18 comments

Geni is a free family tree site, where you can build your tree, invite relatives to collaborate, keep track of family history, find new relatives, share photos and videos, you can even use it to remember birthdays and anniversaries. Simple to use yet functional, definitely worth checking out, especially when all your family ties are fresh in your mind around the holidays. www.geni.com

Cool! I only know a few relatives so building a family tree sounds like a great way to get to know more.

Geni has been around for a while and is a VC funded startup, run by the same guys who run Yammer.

For my 2 cents I like the fact you do the T-shirt thing as it gives exposure to lots of startups. I do think you should not cover well funded groups like Geni as they can afford real PR whilst it also takes away the chance from real bootstrapped startups who dont have the cash to market.

It’s a great promotional opportunity. I think it’s open to everyone so it’s up to the startups to send their shirts and have them featured here.

Good point. A lot of the websites and companies I’ve seen featured here were already well-established. Still, it could be because they’re the ones who do send their shirts here.

How far back do they go? Family rumor says there’s a pirate somewhere on the family tree though I don’t anyone has actually gone and have one built. It should be fun to find out if there’s any truth to that rumor.

I haven’t tried it myself but it says in their site that you can invite relatives to collaborate with you. I guess how far back your tree goes would depend on inputs from relatives as well. Should be fun.
