Outsourcing allows companies to focus on other business issues while having the details taken care of by outside experts. This means that a large amount of resources and attention, which might fall on the shoulders of management professionals, can be used for more important, broader issues within the company.

What’s your take on outsourcing, Jeremy?

10 Marnie Sho November 21, 2010 at 7:24 pm

There are some disadvantages to outsourcing as well. One of these is that outsourcing often eliminates direct communication between a company and its clients. This prevents a company from building solid relationships with their customers, and often leads to dissatisfaction on one or both sides. There is also the danger of not being able to control some aspects of the company, as outsourcing may lead to delayed communications and project implementation. Any sensitive information is more vulnerable, and a company may become very dependent upon its outsource providers, which could lead to problems should the outsource provider back out on their contract suddenly.

Relaxed and happy. I probably would be feeling exactly like he does if I’m running a huge business and only get to work for a few hours each day on it.

Currently, outsourcing takes many forms. Organizations still hire service providers to handle distinct business processes, such as benefits management. But some organizations outsource whole operations. The most common forms are information technology outsourcing (ITO) and business process outsourcing (BPO).

Some nimble companies that are short on time and money, such as start-up software publishers, apply multisourcing — using both internal and service provider staff — in order to speed up the time to launch. They hire a multitude of outsourcing service providers to handle almost all aspects of a new project, from product design, to software coding, to testing, to localization, and even to marketing and sales.

The company I’m working for outsources its customer support in the Philippines. Seems to be working well since the same outsourcing company has been contracted for four years running.

Business process outsourcing encompasses call center outsourcing, human resources outsourcing (HRO), finance and accounting outsourcing, and claims processing outsourcing. These outsourcing deals involve multi-year contracts that can run into hundreds of millions of dollars. Frequently, the people performing the work internally for the client firm are transferred and become employees for the service provider. Dominant outsourcing service providers in the information technology outsourcing and business process outsourcing fields include IBM, EDS, CSC, HP, ACS, Accenture and Capgemini.

LOL, funny t-shirt!

I’ve been outsourcing for a while now and I think one of the biggest problems is to get qualified workers, many contractors don’t deliver the quality they promise unfortunately.

Not according to my experience anyway.

Maybe this book can help with getting this right.

That’s been a bit of a problem for me, too. I tried different contractors for a while before I was finally able to find that best delivered the work I was expecting. It has been smoothing sailing after that.

Outsourcing companies are motivated by profit. The only way to do that is to decrease expenses. Maybe that’s the reason why a lot of outsourcing companies hire employees who deliver substandard quality. That’s always been the downside of outsourcing. Finding a company that delivers quality service and outputs may prove to be a challenge but it’s worth the time and investment.

Outsourcing has been around as long as work specialization has existed. In recent history, companies began employing the outsourcing model to carry out narrow functions, such as payroll, billing and data entry. What’s your two cents’ worth on this, Shoe?

34 EllaineR November 21, 2010 at 8:20 pm

Outsourcing has created many opportunities for companies. In fact, many of the companies that exist today would not have survived after the recession due to the fact that their customers asked them to cut costs by a large sum.

Not only this, but the companies that are not outsourcing are losing. They are not villains searching to do massive layoffs — it’s a necessity.

In order to compete, we must become more educated, and therefore more productive. Meanwhile, we should educate ourselves on what outsourcing actually is, because it is not only designed to cut labor costs.

There are many reasons that companies outsource various jobs, but the most prominent advantage seems to be the fact that it often saves money. And for a small fee of $7 to start it all up? Definitely a winner in my book.

The process of outsourcing generally encompasses four stages: 1) strategic thinking, to develop the organization’s philosophy about the role of outsourcing in its activities; 2) evaluation and selection, to decide on the appropriate outsourcing projects and potential locations for the work to be done and service providers to do it; 3) contract development, to work out the legal, pricing and service level agreement (SLA) terms; and 4) outsourcing management or governance, to refine the ongoing working relationship between the client and outsourcing service providers.

Some people are confusing outsourcing with offshoring. Companies that are outsourcing are cutting their costs down. Offshoring firms, in turn, are just looking for additional specialists to attend to a specific task. Please do correct me if I’m wrong, Shoe.

Good luck getting people behind this one. Though you make some VERY fascinating points, youre going to have to do more than bring up a few things that may be different than what weve already heard. What are trying to say here? What do you want us to think? It seems like you cant really get behind a unique thought. Anyway, thats just my opinion.
