Plenty Of Fish Advertising = The New Affiliate Cash Machine

by Justin Goff on September 5, 2010 · 186 comments

A few months back I wrote some in-depth posts on making money on Facebook for Shoe, and they were a big hit.

Since then, I’ve continued to experiment and dial in more of my Facebook campaigns, but I’ve also branched out and experimented with another popular social networking site… Plenty Of Fish.

Plenty Of Fish is a free dating site that recently ramped up their ad platform to rival Facebook. And right now, there are not many affiliates and advertisers on there, so you can get some quality click for pretty cheap.

I’ve actually found a few of my campaigns for our fat loss product convert much better on POF than they do on Facebook!

So here’s the low down on what you need to know to make money with Plenty Of Fish…

1. Smart Affiliates Are Crushing It By Going Very Narrow And Super Targeting Their Offers…

While Plenty Of Fish doesn’t have the volume that Facebook has, they do offer some insanely specific parameters that you can target. Want to target people who have only been on the site less than 10 times? You can do that. Want to target a 52 year old woman in Iowa who’s overweight and looking for a casual encounter? You can do that too ;)

Plenty Of Fish basically offers all of the same targeting as Facebook, and then a little more. If you have some niche dating offers or zipcode submit offers, you can probably mop up on there.

You can also pick up super targeted clicks in countries like Canada, UK, Australia and Ireland for less than .10!

2. Plenty Of Fish Is Less Strict Than Facebook When It Comes To Ad Text And Pictures

One of the biggest problems with Facebook is the fact that it can be really frustrating trying to get your ads approved. Even when you have legit ads, they’ll sometimes get denied for no reason.

With POF, you really don’t have to worry about this.

Remember when affiliates were running the “Age 26 in Columbus?” ads on Facebook. Well, Facebook got a bunch of complaints and put the nuke on those. Plenty Of Fish, however, still allows you to target ages in your ad text. From my experience, you can be a little more aggressive with your ad text, pictures and headlines.

Why is this crucial?

Well, if you’ve ever done any direct targeting where you call out the user’s age and gender in the ads, then you’ll know that the CTR for those ads are through the roof!

I mainly promote my fat loss product, so this works well for me, as I have a lot of high converting ads that work well on POF, but I can’t run them on Facebook anymore.

If you want to get started with Plenty Of Fish, think of the mindset these people are in…

Most of them are looking for dates, or looking to get married again… So what offers and products would fit this market?

  • dating offers
  • relationship ebooks (“get your ex back” type books could work)
  • health & beauty (lose weight, look better-type products)

Obviously there are more offers that will work, but these are just a few off the top of my head that I think will do well.

Right now Plenty Of Fish is ripe for affiliates… Get on it before it’s too late!

let me tell u something i hate. i suffer from psychosis from time to time. when this happens i get superamped up on the computer ..like cracked out on it.

so…

i like it. its fun. but…

i noticed all the advertising would pertain to me. It caused me to trip out. Like i was on acid or something. and i dont do drugs of any kind pharmaceutical or street so dont think that could be the problem.

What u are doin here is not right. I hate this. Im so used to it now that I pretty much ignore most ads or spam but sometimes if its something that your systems have caught that i want i still fall for it. then i get so mad at myself and my email and phones start blowin up an then i have to be shitty to ppl when otherwise im a sweetheart. anyway, so far i think from what im gathering is that ur a business man. well the way u r doing this sucks dick. i dont like it at all. u have inspired me to blog about this like right now. so stupid fuckin with ppl through their problems or interest.

I think this one’s not as informative as his first contribution. I guess this is strongly targeted to product endorsement rather than getting the ball rolling for newbie web marketers. “Dialing In Your Facebook Campaigns” is much more helpful than this, Justin. Hope to catch a better one next time.

He did mention what type of products/offerings would do well. Those who join dating sites, the legit ones, have varied interests outside of dating. The diversity may just be the ticket to finding a more targeted market.

Are you kidding me? I just signed up and created my first test ad.

There are only 3 concerns I have.
1. Will my Ad/Site get approved, and approved in a timely manner.
2. I wish you could bid on Keywords (such as likes/dislikes)
3. Will there be enough volume.

If you have offers that apply to single people, this probably won’t be for you. However, if you know your product only applies to single, skinny guys in the North East, this can be great.

I hope you guys don’t use this and keep costs down for me.

I have used POF this year for almost two months. Lost lots of money (around $500) and I think I still have around $90 sitting in their account.

I used Dating (Russian, Single Women, Mature Dating). I had created at least thousands ads but I could never make any substantial money.

I have also used Justin’s product from Clickbank. The same story. I don’t think I even made one sale after spending around 200 dollars by creating at least 50 ads and testing on different demographics

Of course eventually I lost around $500.

Every CPA marketer will tell you keep on trying. Test and Test.

In some dating offers, as soon as I made a few sign ups I was encouraged but I lost all sales after one day.

Contrary to most comments, I think PoF has a great chance of making it huge. Case and point: aren’t you wondering why it doesn’t react to all the bad publicity it’s taking? Easy. They are actually counting on it to establish their fanbase. Just like when Paris Hilton flashed her hoo-haa to the world and did it a couple of times more just for good measure. Did she get less famous? Well, you might argue that she got more renowned for the wrong reasons but it’s still quite significant. See the similarities?

You don’t expect catching 10′s in a place like this. The signup page isn’t even classy. The site architecture looks like it was designed by a toddler. The landing page doesn’t even give me the least interest. Reminds me of a seedy motel down at the I-66, if I may describe it as such. However, if you’re into instant self-gratification without the commitment (and boatloads of impending problems), this one is for you.

Happy now? You’re welcome.

Ohh wooaah Ohh wooaah Ohh wooaah
You know you love me, I know you care
Just shout whenever, And I’ll be there
You are my love, You are my heart
And we will never ever-ever be apart

Are we an item. Girl quit playing
“We’re just friends”
What are you sayin?
said theres another and looked right in my eyes
My first love broke my heart for the first time,

And I was like
Baby, baby, baby ooh
Like baby, baby, baby noo
Like baby, baby, baby ooh
Thought you’d always be mine, mine

Baby, baby, baby oohh
Like baby, baby, baby noo
Like baby, baby, baby ohh
Thought you’d always be mine, mine

For you,i would have done what ever
And I just cant believe we ain’t together
And I wanna play it cool, Girl I’m losing you
I’ll buy you anything, ill buy you any ring
And I’m in pieces, Baby fix me
and you’ll shake me til’ you wake me from this bad dream

I’m going down, down, down, down
And I just can’t believe, my first love won’t be around

And I’m like,
Baby, baby, baby oooh
Like baby, baby, baby noo
Like baby, baby, baby ooh
Thought you’d always be mine, mine

Baby, baby, baby oooh
Like baby, baby, baby noo
Like baby, baby, baby ooh

There is a possibility that the person you’re getting down with in a dating site just might be a wolf in a sheep’s clothing. With the current trend in social networking, popular sites like Facebook and Twitter might be next in line sooner or later.

Not to mention the fake advertisers who could be using the site to get traffic to bad sites.

A friend once told me that she tried Match.com, Eharmony & BBW just for fun. While the aforementioned sites were exciting, Plenty of Fish (POF) provided a better selection of men than the three combined. She related that she dated several nice people that lead to friendship. I mean, if people are *actually* enjoying the site, why can’t we utilize it to get our ventures forward?

Reply

105 Hollaback Will September 5, 2010 at 8:42 pm

POF is mostly a play site for women and the men willing to chase them. Of course, only men looking for sex would actually be willing to chase them in that environment. The good guys do not line up AND most women simply check their email and nothing else. Good luck with that.

I actually like the way Facebook strictly regulate the ads they allow to be posted. Makes it more interesting to create the best ones that would easily get approved and capture the attention of target markets.

Reply

110 Guy Cleveland September 6, 2010 at 7:05 pm

That is basically the point in Facebook advertising. Considering the amount of competition you’re dealing with, you have to top all of them just to be the king of the hill. How do you do this, you ask? Well, it involves keeping your target audience engaged by peppering them with as much visuals as you can as well as a solid copy that gets instant attention. From racy lingerie to weight-loss pills, who can resist great aesthetics and a splash or two of original text? Got you there, didn’t I?

Reply

111 Fiona Wong September 5, 2010 at 8:56 pm

Most women on POF have teir expectations set a little too high. This keeps decent guys, who bring something to the table, from bothering with the site. Simply because they can do better elsewhere.

Reply

113 David R September 6, 2010 at 6:54 pm

Just to remind you, MySpace and Friendster came after the Internet dating scene so that muddles up your assumption. I believe PoF is a hybrid between a dating site and social networking. In other words: a treasure trove of web marketing opportunity. Well, like any other venture online or offline, making it big in this setting involves a bit of risk. If you’re not a risk-taker then this whole playing field isn’t for you.

PoF in a nutshell:

Almost no customer support. They have one paid customer support specialist who has to handle all member support issues.

Site design is lacking when compared to other dating sites.

No group chatting or any uploading of videos.

Message forums are now hidden and can only be accessed directly by someone who knows the URL.

A large amount of advertising displayed on the site which can be confusing. Ads can be incorporated into the website menus, your personal messages, etc…

No cost barrier for creating a membership, so watch for married people and scam artists.

(I guess securing a safe PPC trade here is not that cool…)

As per review from an independent dating e-journal: “PlentyOfFish has all the features that you would expect from an online dating service. This includes private messages, instant messaging, searching and a chemistry automated matching system. This dating site also has a unique feature which allows you to prevent certain users from communicating with you that don’t meet with your specific message or profile requirements.” Now, doesn’t that sound a whole lot of web marketing possibilities?

STAY AWAY FROM POF!

Essentially, it’s the worse version of FB. Less traffic, less stuff works, 100x more difficult. I spent about 10k testing 5 different offers. I split-test everything, tried stuff in all sorts of niches, etc. And I’m someone who runs serious(decent by some standards) volume on FB, spending about 4-6k a day.

Let’s just say POF is kinda shitty. Especially if your a noob, it’s essentially a money drain. If you really wanna get started, try FB, or if you know how to work it right, Google.

Reply

129 Brian Siu September 6, 2010 at 8:24 pm

I’m sure Goff is just emphasizing the need to complement ads with the site you are integrating them with. No need to stress the fact that PoF is horrible or it’s just a poor excuse for deprived people to get their kicks. Remember, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Reply

130 H delacruz September 6, 2010 at 8:49 pm

That’s true. Besides, who’s to say the site’s horrible when it has a number of users already. It’s a good market.

Reply

131 Andrew Says So September 6, 2010 at 8:35 pm

A lot of sites have less traffic than Facebook. Hard to find a niche that attracts the kind of numbers that FB enjoys. The thing is, even with less traffic, Plenty of Fish users still make for a good market especially if you have something great to offer.

Reply

132 Almira Keefe September 6, 2010 at 8:53 pm

It’s okay to take risks once in a while. Maintaining ads on Facebook then putting up some on Plenty of Fish is not a bad idea. If it doesn’t work at the latter there’s still the other to cushion the losses.

Reply

133 Rod S. Lee September 6, 2010 at 9:13 pm

You’re implying the idea of a fallback platform — which is very much impressive in my book. I just don’t know how my ads will hold if I start a PPC plan in PoF. Does anyone else need a few more details just to get the ball rolling? Raise your hands!

Reply

134 Justin Goff September 6, 2010 at 9:44 pm

I still do more volume on FB, but POF has provided a nice boost…

Reply

135 Jay September 5, 2010 at 11:56 pm

By the way, this post is ridiculous. He’s talking about FB being hard. Well, in terms of submitting ads, it’s kinda annoying, but in terms of conversions and finding markets and demos for offers, HE JUST HAS NO IDEA WHAT HE’S TALKING ABOUT. This dude is talking out of his you know what.

Let’s put it this way. If you can’t make it on FB, you sure as hell won’t make it on POF.

Just my warning though (take this from a guy who expects at least one campaign to work and has a lot of experience, and when it doesn’t he’s pissed.). Proceed as you will.

Reply

136 Kyle September 6, 2010 at 6:41 pm

I have been testing the waters of affiliate marketing for sometime now and I think Justin is just emphasizing that dating sites like plentyoffish are ideal to integrate your product(s) with — especially when it’s for physical enhancement. We have to understand that many dating site users are inclined to use these merchandise to be more attractive, albeit in a digital setting. PPC program for fat loss products in an Internet-based meeting place for lonely people? Sounds good enough for me.

Most topics, i.e. dating, covered by professional affiliate marketers, whether on their blogs or conventions are actually passe and are on the wane.

So it’s not the niche that’s something to look out for but the methods to their madness that we can carry over to the next promising niche.

Still recall when social networking sites were generally considered as gossip havens? Ever remember when there were no “Like” buttons? Try everything once and you’re definitely good to go. Also, according to rumors he sells his database to the paid dating sites in order for them to try to convert his customers. Markus made a lot of money with adsense but I heard that dried up and then he decided..why send all the money to the paid sites..why not start a premium service himself. Not sure how that is working out.

I have been in the dating business for 13 years. Not sure how you can actually call POF a dating “service” as his website provides a service to advertisers not to the singles that flock there. The difference between a dating service and his site is that people will pay to meet sincere, educated, professional singles on a dating “service” Free sites attract scammers, spammers, married people, and people looking for one nighters. Doesn’t anyone worry about their safety anymore? The profiles are not screened, the forum is controlled by other members – do something wrong and you are banned. What kind of service is this? I have friends using it and they are horrified with the kinds of responses they get, but I tell them what can you expect for free. POF advertises dating services that DO provide a good service and that is how he is paid, so why wouldn’t people just avoid paying this middle man and go straight to the premium sites who do approve ads, and provide personal customer service.

Just my 2 cents. As far as Facebook advertising, their approval system is so irregular and the time spent putting ads together does not make it worthwhile. I know a lot of people will even say..Facebook has ads?

181 David October 25, 2010 at 10:17 pm

well, i have heard many paid dating site would like to advertise there. some makes good profit since its niche. i know pof accept paid site to be displayed. like herpes niche dating site datewithherpes.com They claim it would help people with herpes, std to find friends, love and even support. but you need to get your account approved at the beginning of everything! :)

You are right in that there is more tolerance with ads on POF and targeting more specific than Facebook. But you are avoiding the fundamental issue that the market is minute compared to Facebook. POF is all about people getting their leg over and perhaps losing a bit of weight to make it easier whilst the Facebook market is much more general.

I don’t think POF readers will be interested in my ceiling tiles unless I can get glass ones, now there is a thought!!!!
