Just use the godamn test email function.

by Jeremy Schoemaker on June 22, 2010 · 69 comments

I sent out a email last night to the ShoeMoney newsletter list about the takeaways from my keynote session yesterday morning.

I only had about 15 mins to write it and had several people testing me who were waiting on me to join them for dinner.

Well I typed it up and let it fly….   And when I saw it in my inbox my stomach sank as I realized somehow the formatting got all jacked up and it like double pasted or something. Email is not like a blog post where I can just fix it…

What makes this more fun is then your phone blows up with texts from friends letting m know my email I just sent was jacked.

 Thanks….  Salt meet wound.

Course this could have easily been avoided if I would have just used the test email function.

But does it really matter ?  The click through ratio was great and I didn’t have many opt outs….

Maybe in the end it’s good to show you  are just a regular dumbass  like most people.  Maybe that’s my justification for fsking up…

Use the test email function.

Were the links redirect in it as well (bit.ly) or was that a different instance?

I actually just read over my email blast 2-3 times, let’s hope it goes well tomorrow!

True Story…. My career “moment” involved meeting “Martha Stewart.” Let’s change the name’s to protect the innocent, but for the sake of impact… it was THE moment in my career. On my way to work, I hit a skunk. Do you understand?

***ON MY WAY TO WORK, I HIT A SKUNK***.

And I met with the starlet and the executive team anyways. And I closed the deal. And. I. Closed. Because. I stunk personally, but what I had to say did not.

This is you and your “godamn email faux pas. Who cares? Shit delivery does not = shit message.

Well if you’ve got status everyone expects perfection. But we do make mistakes and it’s alright. Just be thankful these mistakes are small.

Oh yeah, been there, done that…matter of fact…just last week I had one of those wonderful discoveries myself. The good thing is…we can always count on our readers to let us know. ;)

Then the question becomes…do you resend another one, that is corrected, right at the moment they may be hating you. Heee…heee.

Yeah that sucks. I’m a journalist, so I feel your pain on releasing something with an error. Newspaper errors feel far worse! My editor at the time had a conversation with me about how everyone makes mistakes only to then lecture me on checking details and all that good stuff. So it happens to everyone. Long forgotten by now by everyone except me, probably.

I guess we just need to be very careful next time. We need to double check first before sending it out or posting it, if its a blog post. :)

Reply

59 Gary Smith June 23, 2010 at 7:48 pm

That’s not so bad. I’d rather read a poorly formatted email than one that starts out ‘Hello {!firstname_fix}’ :) . As to whether a nastily laid out email is unsubscribe-worthy… it depends who it was from. I’m not on your list but if I was it would take far more than sloppy formatting to get me off. (that’s a compliment… though it also looks like some sneaky double entedre lol)
