I sent out a email last night to the ShoeMoney newsletter list about the takeaways from my keynote session yesterday morning.
I only had about 15 mins to write it and had several people testing me who were waiting on me to join them for dinner.
Well I typed it up and let it fly…. And when I saw it in my inbox my stomach sank as I realized somehow the formatting got all jacked up and it like double pasted or something. Email is not like a blog post where I can just fix it…
What makes this more fun is then your phone blows up with texts from friends letting m know my email I just sent was jacked.
Thanks…. Salt meet wound.
Course this could have easily been avoided if I would have just used the test email function.
But does it really matter ? The click through ratio was great and I didn’t have many opt outs….
Maybe in the end it’s good to show you are just a regular dumbass like most people. Maybe that’s my justification for fsking up…
Use the test email function.

Were the links redirect in it as well (bit.ly) or was that a different instance?
I actually just read over my email blast 2-3 times, let’s hope it goes well tomorrow!
LOL, I didn’t email you this time.
Haha, that really does deserve one of these – FACEPALM!
As my parents always told me – “Do everything twice”. Don’t be a fool, make sure it’s right.
by the way how can I unsubscribe from your sales letter e-mail?? I can`t see the option on your email.
there is a link in the bottom of every email.
Dude… Please…. I quit my day job because of your advice. Who gives a shit? It’s about the message, not the ****message.*** You might as well start adding some shizzle to your posts. WTH…
Nice to know that everyone F’s up sometimes. Go Shoe…
Salt meets wound. Stealing that Fo Sho.
Yikes! Happens to the best of us.
True Story…. My career “moment” involved meeting “Martha Stewart.” Let’s change the name’s to protect the innocent, but for the sake of impact… it was THE moment in my career. On my way to work, I hit a skunk. Do you understand?
***ON MY WAY TO WORK, I HIT A SKUNK***.
And I met with the starlet and the executive team anyways. And I closed the deal. And. I. Closed. Because. I stunk personally, but what I had to say did not.
This is you and your “godamn email faux pas. Who cares? Shit delivery does not = shit message.
Moral of the story: use the test email function. LOL
And today’s show was sponsored by the TEST EMAIL FUNCTION.
Fast forward to Free Shirt Friday… yeah, This sort of sux.
Test email function: the revenge. LMAO. BTW – You rank #6 for email test function. SrslyLMAO.
OMG, yes.
Well if you’ve got status everyone expects perfection. But we do make mistakes and it’s alright. Just be thankful these mistakes are small.
I get your newsletter – but strangly – i didnt get this one you are talking about.
Salt meets wound! – I liked that!
I think such email disasters are very common. but everyone will came to know only after it happened.
ha ha, you’ll probably increase your open rate as people go to their inbox to see the screw up
Oh yeah, been there, done that…matter of fact…just last week I had one of those wonderful discoveries myself. The good thing is…we can always count on our readers to let us know.
Then the question becomes…do you resend another one, that is corrected, right at the moment they may be hating you. Heee…heee.

Call me grumpy but I’m stopping the RSS feed for this blog — I want professional advice not childish profane headlines.
Oh man I hate that. I rarely use it, but have made similar mistakes. Worse yet is sending it to the wrong list!
Bummer. Happens to the best of us.
LOL! i hate it when that happens!
What….? Shoe isn’t Perfect? My world is crumbling before my eyes! LOL
That’s happened to me too. Thanks for the reminder.
The great thing about these kinds of mishaps is that everyone will forget by next week. Everyone is just too busy these days to dwell on that kind of thing.
That peaked my curiosity. I just looked for it. Maybe it didn’t go through?
Hmmm…this post reminds me of what happened to me when I also failed to use the test email function. Complete hijinks! Embarrassing when you own your own shop.
Nice to see that even ShoeMoney makes mistakes…. and has the guts to share!!!
I think you should blame this one on Tigh. Ha!
“But does it really matter ? The click through ratio was great and I didn’t have many opt outs…” That, I believe, is a certified Shoe turn-around!
Sometimes you’re forced to work with less than ideal conditions and this is what you get. I go through this all the time!
I heard the keynote was awesome. Wish I could have been there.
Doh!
Those pesky dinner invites! They always ruin everything!
I did this once at work. I ended up having a nice “talking to” by my boss. I am no longer allowed to send out my agency’s newsletter. Oops!
To err is human; to forgive, divine.

That’s cool to know you still write your own stuff on the newsletter and the blog. 100% original ShoeMoney material. That’s what we like!
Where can I sign up for the newsletter?
I suppose we can forgive you this time!
Is this a Shoemoney story? I think it’s Shoemoney story day.
My email list is so small that no one would even notice. I think this sounds like a good problem to have…. To have your phone ringing off the hook with people letting you know about the mess. It’s all relative!
I opened this just as the earthquake hit Ottawa today. 5.7! Thought the timing was kind of funny….
Appreciate your headlines. Always makes me want to read. Who hasn’t this happened to? LOL!
I wouldn’t opt out because of that. Have learned way too much from you. You’ve got a great track record. Keep it up Shoemoney!
Yeah that sucks. I’m a journalist, so I feel your pain on releasing something with an error. Newspaper errors feel far worse! My editor at the time had a conversation with me about how everyone makes mistakes only to then lecture me on checking details and all that good stuff. So it happens to everyone. Long forgotten by now by everyone except me, probably.
Erring test email functions are so hardcore! They even victimized our beloved Shoe.
I know you have some big names following you, but most of us don’t care about that kind of stuff. Actually, I bet even the big names don’t mind. It’s probably happened to them too!
Good reminder for just about everyone.
My summer class at USC has us write summaries on the blogs we are required to follow, including yours. Today’s summary was easy: Use the email test function!
I’d be interested in seeing the keynote takeaway notes.
It wasn’t that bad. YOu could still get some info out of it.
Hahaha yea – I actually enjoyed it… at first I was like huh? Then I realized what happened (double control+v perhaps).
Damn tricky things. Formatting gets me every time.
That’s a good thing man. Then it gives you to send the infamous “Oops” email as another way to pound your list.
We only accept perfection around here! Get it together! j/k – LOL on the error. No harm done.
I guess we just need to be very careful next time. We need to double check first before sending it out or posting it, if its a blog post.
That’s not so bad. I’d rather read a poorly formatted email than one that starts out ‘Hello {!firstname_fix}’
. As to whether a nastily laid out email is unsubscribe-worthy… it depends who it was from. I’m not on your list but if I was it would take far more than sloppy formatting to get me off. (that’s a compliment… though it also looks like some sneaky double entedre lol)
As you move from passive blogger to proactive mailing list guru these things are helpful to engage.
Please just dont use the `my server crashed with the traffic` one because if they cant keep a server alive how can they show peoples how to make moneyz.

Well, I must say I feel much better knowing that kind of mistakes happen to the best in the biz.
WOW! Even the “Guru’s” make mistakes. Helps make us peons feel more normal. Anyway, it’s more about the content than the layout. Keep Up The Great Work!
Blame it on your friends for rushing you. It’s not you fault, dude! Never take blame if you don’t have too.
I guess we really have to be careful. we really have to double check first before sending it out or posting. thanks for the post
Your mind had probably already moved on to the tasty steak or drinks that you were going to have with your buddies……..oh well, everyone makes mistakes.
Awesome. Thanks for the reminder. Forgot testing was even an option with how little I blast my lists. Just used it though.
I would have just called it bling, or some lame excuse like that..
Never let them see your weaknesses!!
It’s pretty awesome when you can learn from other people’s mistakes. I feel like I will forever use the test email function from now on. Thanks for the heads up!
