So today is my 36th birthday…. and the 7th time it has fallen on Memorial Day…. I think.
I am flying home from Frank Kern’s list control event in San Diego. What an amazing show he put on.
Sorry to be so brief. I am pretty beat
Plus I am sure a lot of you have better things to do on memorial day then read a blog.
I have a interesting video I want to post tomorrow afternoon about some revelations I had while here about the info marketing space in general.

3 years ago we had a company called AuctionAds kicking ass and we needed our own datacenter with a zillion computers and bandwidth (and lots of expense).
When we sold the company we were able to leverage a great price on bandwidth to keep some boxes there in a rack… I can’t really go into specific details to much because of non disclosure on the sale agreement of the company but trust me we got a great deal.
But now 3 years later all of our servers are out of warranty and we really expanded our company but not our technical resources so moving to a managed hosting solution seems like much greener grass (to me).

In case you missed it Twitter made a announcement yesterday that they will be banning all 3rd party companies from using the API to put ads into Twitter. Here is the official quote from Twitter CFO Dick Costolo:
Why are we prohibiting these kinds of ads? First, third party ad networks are not necessarily looking to preserve the unique user experience Twitter has created. They may optimize for either market share or short-term revenue at the expense of the long-term health of the Twitter platform. For example, a third party ad network may seek to maximize ad impressions and click through rates even if it leads to a net decrease in Twitter use due to user dissatisfaction.
Secondly, the basis for building a lasting advertising network that benefits users should be innovation, not near-term monetization. Twitter is uniquely dependent on and responsible for the long-term health and value of the platform. Accordingly, a necessary focus of Promoted Tweets is to explore ways to create value for our users. Third party ad networks may be optimized for near-term monetization at the expense of innovating or creating the best user experience. We believe it is our responsibility to encourage creative product development and to curb practices that compromise innovation.
of maintaining the network, protecting the Tweet stream against spam, supporting user requests, and scaling the service. Indeed, Twitter will bear many of the support costs associated with any third-party paid Tweets, as Twitter receives support emails related to anything a user sees in a tweet stream. The third-party bears few of these costs by comparison.
ShoeMoney corporate bullshit un-filter:
Everybody is making money off of Twitter BUT Twitter. And we are doing all the work and incurring all the costs!

Last weekend my wife and I trucked across America to attend my sisters wedding reception. It was about a 8 hour drive with all the stops we made.
On the way there I was using my 3G iPad a bit (which had great throughput for browsing the web & email all the way from Lincoln, Nebraska to Moline, Illinois) and I stumbled across a article about how Sesame Street had over 12 different iPhone and ipad apps. So I went to check them out on my iPad and searching the iPad store i typed in the first 2 letters of Sesame Street “se” to my surprise a lot of adult content came up:

Today is the 6th anniversary of this website (ShoeMoney.com).
I originally tried to register the site in 2002 but it was owned by someone else…. so I used Godaddy’s backorder service and kind of forgot about it.
Then on May 20th 2004 I got a email from godaddy that the domain had dropped and I could register it (dropped services then are not what they are today). I snapped it up and started writing. Back then I was using postnuke as my blogging platform.

About once a day or so I get a email from someone about how Google must have banned the ShoeMoney System from their search index.
The real fact is that we have been blocking Google since launch. I have written extensively about how I don’t need Google to have a successful business and wanted to put my money where my mouth is. Literally.

Very shortly the ShoeMoney System will be closing in on making 1 million dollars in gross revenue. All while being out of Google and most other search engines.
Obviously this opened up a huge opportunity for affiliates who understand SEO and pay per click marketers. But surprisingly enough (to some) most of our sales came from word of mouth recommendations of our existing users or from people familiar with our brand.
Would I recommend this to you? Absolutely not. Obviously it cost us some money by not being listed in Google.
You just hear so much about how SEO is everything that I wanted to prove completely the opposite.
You need to build a brand and create a quality product or service that people actually want to recommend to their friends.
Going forward we will unblock Google and see what happens. Could be interesting.
Last weekend I took my wife for a little weekend getaway to Las Vegas. We really had no formal plans except we both wanted to see the Beatles show at the Mirage on Saturday night.
While this was not a business trip it was still the first time I traveled anywhere without a laptop going back about 8 years. I was not really worried though, I had applications installed that can do everything I needed. Plus I had the keyboard dock so if I was in a pinch I could always just dock it and type away. After all, I normally write 2-3 blog posts on planes and wasn’t real excited about writing with the touch screen for full on blog posts so the keyboard dock put my mind at ease a bit.
As far as connectivity I have a 3G 64GB iPad that has unlimited data plan through AT&T. I was excited to test this out and see how convenient it would be over my Sprint 3G card that I been paying $60 a month for for the last 3+ years that I normally used for my backpack.
