Twitter Account Suspended

by Jeremy Schoemaker on February 16, 2010 · 62 comments

Update: My twitter accont has been restored as of 11am this morning (4 hours after this was posted). I was really surprised at how fast the Twitter team responded. 1.5 business days to remedy the issue is impressive.

I was at violin practice with my 3 year old daughter on Saturday morning and took a funny video of her playing the fiddle to upload to Twitter. I got an error that my password was incorrect…. weird…

When I got home about 30 mins later I checked with my TweetDeck client and it gave me the same error about my password being incorrect.

So then I went to the Twitter website and that’s when I saw this:

Suspended from twitter

Damn, I thought…. What the hell is going on. Immediately I filed a support ticket with Twitter contesting the suspension. I don’t know how long it takes them to respond to something like that.

My mind kind of raced about what could have possibly caused this… Several things came to mind.

The ShoeMoney Account

If you remember this is not the first time this has happened to me. The account was suspended before and unsuspended a couple days later with no explanation of why I was suspended in the first place.

The ShoeMoney account was originally owned by someone who had gotten it banned before giving it to me. The account has always been flagged as a bad account and has never shown up in the public search because of previous spam violations (before I ever even had control of it).

Sponsored Tweets

If you notice in the screenshot above the account was suspended 20 minutes after I tweeted a sponsored tweet. While I have been one of the more prolific Twitter publishers I have always adhered to Twitter and FTC guidelines as far as advertising goes.

In addition to referring the most people to sponsored tweets I have also been very transparent about how much money I have earned from tweeting. In 2009 I earned over $50,000.00 for tweeting.

I don’t know if Twitter has changed their tune on sponsored tweets but they have not updated their terms of service to reflect that if so.

Trademark Disputes

In the past couple weeks we have filed several trademark dispute requests against accounts that were impersonating me, my company, or using the ShoeMoney Trademark. These accounts have been gradually getting suspended in the last several days.

It’s possible that my account was mistakenly suspended thinking it was violating that trademark.

I appreciate the hundreds of you notifying me by phone, SMS, Facebook, and email that my account was suspended. Thanks, I know ;)

I have to tell you it’s quite a bummer to have your twitter account suspended. I have a lot of stuff integrated with Twitter and have really enjoyed using it.

I think everything will work out and the account will be unsuspended. I just have to be patient and let the system work. A person has been assigned to the ticket… and I am in the queue.

In the meantime it really allows me to focus more on the ShoeMoney System users and on some other things we have in the works.

So, I hope I get my account back but if not life will go on. I was just reading how it can take as long as 2 months to get your Twitter support ticket responded to…. so for now I will focus on things I can do something about ;)

I think twitter must know which the original account owned by you. But, your blog loading is too hard

Cheers :)

shoe, thank you so much for this post! i was about to bring thus up on my blog and i will. I have couple of twitter accounts; each linked with my blogs. I was shocked to see that a few of them were suspended without any reason. what the hell is twitter doing? What is spam according to twitter that they are banning accounts without valid reasons. I am about to bring this topic to the crowd and i hope twitter works it out before people lose it all..

Something is up on their end because the same thing happened to me at the end of last week.

I opened a ticket…they responded and I was back up and running in 3 days.

Maybe they changed something on their filters/security or something?

The same thing happend to me! It only took a couple of days though and I got it back. I posted about it here and who I contacted. I hope it helps. http://buildingbodies.ca/twitter-account-suspended-what-to-do/ It freaks you out when it happens because of the time invested. Funny enough the reason it really ticked me off was because the shoemoney system has a “sponsored tweets” video tutorial coming up soon and I was choked that now my resource was trashed and I wouldn’t get to use the video!

That sucks, a whole bunch………….You’d think twitter would be more on their game, seeing how Google is trying to take them out via buzz.

An excellent time to get that forum online on the shoemoney system..

Funny how addictive Twitter can get – I’ve been jones’in for some ShoeMoney updates. An SMS forum would certainly help alleviate my withdrawals. LOL

Might not be a popular point of view but something in my gut is telling me that Twitter is getting really fed up with all the sponsored tweets clogging their system.

There are a lot of people making a lot of money through Twitter and Twitter aren’t seeing a cent of it, but they’re still having to pay for the bandwidth each month! Something has to give.

That sucks,

I want to be the owner of a suspended account, mostly because I’m the owner of the .com I wish it was easier to get through to Twitter than it is right now.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that both me and my wife seem to ‘automagically’ follow you again after unfollowing you. I don’t know how this happens / how you do it but it’s sure as hell happening.

No worries though I finally went ahead and blocked you.

A similar story to yours was that I got disabled on Facebook Wednesday February 10th and after contacting Facebook, they told me “Your account has been temporarily suspended for security purposes. Our systems indicate that your Facebook account has been compromised by cybercriminals attempting to impersonate you.”

It took a good 5 days for them to give me back control of my account, yet they haven’t given me any proofs on why they thought my account had been compromised, especially since I had logged on 3 hours earlier and no one (friends) had notified me of suspicious activities.

There are so many user accounts, so many bots, and so many scripts, and yet only a few full-time Twitter support agents. (Try contacting @Caroline or @Crystal). also [their username]@twitter.com for email.

No doubt that Twitter uses algorithms of their own to suspend accounts. One of the criteria which will trigger a suspension is if followers start to “block” your account or report it as spam at an irregular high frequency.

You get a few unhappy followers to “block” you all at once, and viola! …suspended.

This page is also useful – http://help.twitter.com/forums/10713/entries/42646 and indicates which items which will trigger suspensions.

But you would think that an account with over 90K followers wouldn’t be suspended automatically. That’s a bad algo if it was.

Glad to hear you’re back on. Mine was suspended about a year ago for 2 hours, and then opened again. I didn’t even submit a support ticket to ask why and it was back. Very weird.

On a related note, I still can’t follow you man. :(

If the case really is that Twitter is getting fed up with sponsored tweets, they should turn their frown upside down and start to make their own commissions off of it.

If I gave you my Twitter account could you make me $50K/year with it? Haha. I’ll profit share!

Same thing happened to me on one of my 16 different twitter accounts. They wouldn’t reverse the suspension cause I was guilty. But I was able to create another account and swift everything to the new account, which has more followers than the original now.

It’s a very good possibility that some people reported you as spam Jeremy. I understand that you make money from tweeting and are a proud member of sponsored tweets, but some may take your ads as spam.

The thing is though, if they have a problem with it, they shouldn’t be following you to begin with. I don’t see your ads come off as spam IMO

46 Mike February 18, 2010 at 6:56 am

Jeremy
These blips happen, but mostly it’s easily rectified. Twits recognised you had done nothing wrong and restored you.

Twitter has not decided “yet” what they consider to be spam. If they can’t decide they block everything if they are in doubt.
I think some good old fashioned “common sense” needs to applied by them.

Trouble is “common sense” is not common lol. It is quite rare, so expect another block soon, later or never.

Your guess is as good as mine…

Sounds like you were on the “fiddle” to me..lol

Keep up the good work.
Mike

Can’t base you business on someone else’s platform. Time and again experienced Internet Marketers make the same mistake. Its not yours, you don’t control it. Someday someone will pull it down if you use it a lot.

I was hosting a class on Twitter and Facebook at my office and was setting up about ten Twitter accounts with the people all on the same network. It looks like all of them have been suspended. I never even thought about this issue when I had them register.

I wonder how I can get this resolved.
