Tell me how you use Foursquare

People keep telling me I gotta get onboard with this foursquare stuff… but I don’t get it. It seems like a fun game if you have the time. Am I wrong?

Never heard of it? Do you have any more info? What is it? I’m too lazy to google it.

Foursquare on your phone is a new way to explore your city. You post tips, and can get points and prizes. Very Geo-location sensitive.

You said the same thing about twitter. Buck up and do that bitch.

Sure… but people made good arguments about twitter which really turned the light on.

So what is it about foursquare?

Damnit. You’re making me say something meaningful? Sonofabitch.

Well I’d echo jtGraphic above mostly. If I had a bad ass bar and wanted to do a promo, I’d probably use FourSquare to promote it. It’s like a game for people to go as many places as possible. Kinda like getting achievements on XBox 360.

I haven’t used it yet. I’m not really sure why it’d be important for me, but I’m sure that if you were hosting an event, it would be great.

Never heard of it. Jeremy search on Wiki or How to sites. It will help.

I am just looking into wikipedia.

The thing to take away from it is the “check-in” and “leaderboard” concepts. That’s what makes it fun. But actually finding the place you’re at using 4 square is painful imo…

foursquare and 3 years ago there was dodgeball. Consumed, digested and wasted by Google. They didn’t see it either.

based on what i have seen it seems like it would be popular with people that regularly club or eat their dinner at happy hour spreads. Based on that I could see why it would be good for restaurants and bars to participate.

Ditto! Never heard of it. The length of this post is just about the length of work I’ve done this morning… Can’t get my butt moving. Instead of writing, I’m reading. I need focus.

Similar to twitter it’s something for people with too much time on their hands to waste their time away.

I use foursquare for its user tips/special offers. You might find things that you didn’t know about.

I’m with you, Jeremy. I’ve never really seen the benefits to me or my business of using Foursquare. I’m really scratching my head on that one.

Here’s how a promoter should use it.

You sign up with an account using your business name – like Shoemoney, or Bob’s Pizza, etc.

Then whenever you go to Wal-Mart, your favorite bars, restaurants, etc. you check in.

The more you do this the more visible you will be to other people doing the same thing – so you can promote your brand while doing your errands or while traveling to conferences, etc.

Just add your logo and web site to your profile…

You can also see who’s where when.

Make sense?

It’s basically a more manually interactive version of Latitude. If you and a group of friends all use it with regularity, you will be able to locate each other. At the same time, it compliments twitter’s “What are you doing?” and/or facebook’s old “Jeremy is…” by asking the question “where are you?”

I like it for three reasons… 1) It’s a good way to broadcast to your group of friends that you are out, especially for nights out. Friends that live locally get the message and can join you. 2) It makes for a nice streamlined list of places you’ve been when you look at your check in history 3) It’s nearly effortless and is integrated into other social media sites

And that’s just the user reasons. From a business standpoint…every check in is like an advertisement for a place of business.

Sure, the world of foursquare is built around the game and the accumulation of points. That may seem a little childish…but I promise you that you will be talking trash to your friends “become the mayor” of your favorite restaurant.

Here’s a good overview, http://mashable.com/2009/07/25/foursquare-app/.

Could be useful for specific applications, but just posting your location all day seems pointless. Maybe good as a possible companion app for Twitter, used only when location actually matters. But personally I don’t want updates of your whereabouts all day. I don’t care.

It’s an app use by burglars to track when you’re not at home.

j/k. Like FunnyChix said, think it of it like a real life game that allows you and your friends to explore your city. You get point based on the number of visits, first time visitor, new finds, etc.

I guess it’s for those that need or want to know where everyone is and what they’re doing. Twitter asks “What’s happening?”, 4square asks “Where are you and how is it?”

Let me guess.
Twitter have banned your ass.
So to save face and keep your incredibly large ego stroked you will jump on board with foursquare or whatever and this will be the next big thing.

I think I’ll have to checkout FourSquare when my Twitter Accounts get banned. ;)

It sounds pretty useless for me, so I hope that doesn’t happen and I’ve never heard about it before until now. But then again, Shoemoney could explode it’s name….oh wait, he already did.

I agree that it is time consuming but foursquare can have payoffs for business owners and loyal customers alike.

I almost stopped using it until it got me some free breakfast.

They have some work to do regarding the check in process but I do believe that it has potential.

I’d rather slide down a rusty sword and sprinkle salt on my mangled bollocks than spend any time with Foursquare.

It would be much easier just to get a neon sign for your house so that burglars know when you’re not there.

Yeah I agree with it being like a game, but I’ve also found it to be quite handy at new restaurants and bars. They have a “tips” section where you can see what others ordered, liked and didn’t like. Comes in pretty handy, and I’m sure it’s going to be valuable when I head to Toronto later today for the first time.

Hmmm foursquare seems like twitter for stalker friends, you know, the ones from under grad that you barely knew but still call and want to know where ya are / hang out. The only time I could imagine it being even remotely useful is if I was being mugged — hey guys, at Union Station, being mugged, feel free to stop by!

Shoemoney, I agree to an extent. I am doing it… when I have the time. I am – in fact – Mayor of my gym!!!! Sort’ve cool… maybe not. But, I guess I am doing it because of my fascination with what geo-targeting will do for marketers in the future. I think FourSquare is significant not because of what the company does… but because of what it represents.
