Starcraft2, Real Estate, and Android Apps – Big Opportunities in 2010

Posted by Jeremy Schoemaker.

I see some huge opportunities in 2010 in a few niches.

Real Estate – Most experts believe we are seeing the bottom floor of the housing market. Wether or not thats true there is big buzz again about making money with real estate. Just this morning I heard a couple commercials about how now is the biggest opportunity ever to make a fortune in real estate. The hype machine is going full bore and people are searching for more information about products that can give them a competitive edge. I think applications and web services that cater to the real estate investor are going to be huge in 2010.

Android applications – My prediction last year was that the Android platform would be dead before I would ever be able to try it. I was kind of close.. I just had to leave Sprint to get a decent android phone. But Android is not going anywhere… in fact its gaining market share like crazy. There is a huge market imbalance right now on the Android platform and developers are getting away with making very sub-par applications for 10x the price of their iPhone counter parts. Good Android applications sell for $10-$20 all day. and they sell tens of thousands of applications. Android developers right now have it extremely good. Very crappy applications are selling really well. Its really a developer/sellers market right now on the Android but I think by the end of 2010 it will be more of a buyers market as the marketplace is saturated with quality low cost applications.

Starcraft2 – 2010 will finally be the year that Blizzard releases the sequel to one of the best selling games ever created. Its already in private beta and they are scheduled for a late q1 release. This game is going to be huge and people who build communities/news sites around it and become authorities in the space are going to make a ton of cash. I still can’t believe that the original (created in 1998) is still usually in the top 100 best selling games daily on amazon. Starcraft2 is going to be huge!

But these are just my thoughts on 2010. What niches are you looking into?

Can running a Contest Hurt Your Company?

Posted by Jeremy Schoemaker.

Running a contest can be a great way to get links and traffic in the short term but in the end can it actually hurt your company?

Let’s look at the recent Invesp debacle.

Invesp decided to do a contest for Internet Marketer of 2009. They picked 100 people who have a blog. Sounds smart right? That should get them a lot of links and traffic! Well… lets see what happened.

I was talking with John Chow about how silly I thought the contest was and how we should endorse an underdog to win. He suggested we tell everyone to vote for ZK. I thought it was a great idea.

Within the next couple days ZK jumped out to a massive commanding lead.

Then the powers that be at Invesp nuked all of ZK’s votes claiming they were all from a couple IP addresses.

So here is the thing. Either way Invesp looks incompetent.

They either completely rigged their contest OR they are so incompetent that they cant do a voting script that discounts the same IP address.

Another issue I see is that If 100 people are nominated for an award then that means you have to tell 99 people that they are losers. Now I don’t know about you but I do not like to lose at anything.

To be fair to Invesp I know nothing about them or what they do. They could be the greatest PPC management & SEO company in the world.

But at viral marketing with contests they clearly cost themselves a lot of reputation… and for what?

So be careful with your contests. If you are going to do them… then do them right!

What Marketers Can Learn From Avatar The Movie

Posted by Jeremy Schoemaker.

**Warning If you have not seen Avatar the movie yet this post will spoil some of it for you. My basic review is its well worth seeing although its very predictable. You have been warned. **

Last weekend I went to see the movie Avatar with my wife. The special effects and CGI are well worth the money but the story is amazingly predictable. So predictable I swore I knew the story from another movie…

Lets look at the basic plot of the movie…

Person poses as a friend to get to know the enemy.
Person is greeted as hostile at first by the enemy.
Person gets to know the enemy and they teach him their ways.
Person falls in love with enemy leaders daughter.
Person original clan attacks enemy.
Person joins and fights on the enemy side.
Person becomes the hero to the enemy.

It hit me on the way home from the movie theater. Its the same story as the 1990 smash hit Dances With Wolves (yea I know most of you are too young).

In that movie (for those of you under 30) – Kevin Costner gets in good with some Indians… they teach him their ways, he falls in love with the chiefs daughter, the us army attacks the Indians, he fights with the Indians, saves the Indians in the end.

There are also plenty of other movies out there with the same story or version of the story… like Troy or Donnie Brasco for instance.

So what does this mean? Well, in short- there really is no new stories, instead there are just creative alterations of the originals.

In the literary world Christopher Booker argues that there are only really 7 original story plots and everything else is just alteration of those. The 7 different plots he says are:

  • Overcoming the Monster
  • Rags to Riches
  • The Quest
  • Voyage and Return The hero or heroine
  • Comedy
  • Tragedy
  • Rebirth

Pretty interesting.

So what can we learn from this?

Well, no matter what you are doing, you can learn from this.

Just like with movies and books their are no new methods/ideas . Just alterations of what has worked for ever.

Was Google the first search engine?

Did eBay invent internet auctions?

Did Microsoft invent the operating system?

Did Nintendo invent the gaming console?

None of these companies were the first to market in their arena… they were just the ones who perfected their version of the story.

Seth Godin teaches us in All Marketers are Liars (now with an all new cover!) that people buy products not because of the actual product itself, but because of the stories associated with that product and specifically the stories we tell ourselves about that product. In the book Seth gives countless examples about products like the crockpot which were tried with many companies before one company told the right story.

In our case the best example of this is AuctionAds. On March 7th, 2007 we launched a advertising network built around the eBay affiliate system. But there were over 7 other companies doing the same thing… Well we had a great story.

  • Our publishers made a lot of money because we paid out 100% of the earnings to them.
  • We had net 0 payment terms meaning when the month ended you got paid for that month on the 1st of the month.
  • We had a great easy interface that got people up in running in minutes.
  • Amazing affiliate system built in.
  • Incentivizing publishers
  • Awesome cashing system developed by ddn
  • Many other things

AuctionAds was a pretty big game changer in the world of display advertising networks. Not really for the actual product but the methods on how we grew the company and ended up selling it in only 4 short months. It was a great story.

I think the biggest thing we did that made us succeed where so many others were failing is that we were willing to do what others wern’t or what they simply couldn’t.

A lot of times being the newbie startup has HUGE advantages because you can do things that others can’t (see Gmail starting with 1GB account while Yahoo and Hotmail had 15mb limits).

We are planning to change the entire “how to make money online” industry ShoeMoney System launching early q1 of 2010. In the ShoeMoney system we:

  • Walk complete newbies through every process of making money on the internet.
  • Have over $2500 in coupon codes from every major advertising network.
  • Will be at a very low pricepoint so people are not investing thousands just to find out its not for them.
  • Will WAY over deliver with hundreds of hours of content.
  • Teach from our many years in building successful companies

I don’t think the cess pool known as “how to make money online” is ready for something like we are going to offer and I believe our system will change that industry forever.

Whether you are launching a new company or are just an affiliate marketer ask yourself what *new* value are you bringing to the table? What are you doing that others are not ? What are you doing that others can not? What story are you telling?

Liz Strauss Facebook Spambot

Posted by Jeremy Schoemaker.

This morning I was presently surprised to see a invite from “Social Media Expert” – Liz Strauss to be friends on Facebook. Cool.. I never met Liz and I dunno what she does but I have heard the name so to have her initiate contact with me to be friends on Facebook seemed pretty cool.

Then without message or anything 8 hours later I get a invite to be a fan of Liz Strauss. Hmm whats next more unsolicited invitations?

I have seen these bots around Facebook used by some pretty savvy marketers but I gotta be honest I don’t think its smart. It rubs me the wrong way. Maybe its just because I am hip to it?

Its like you invite me to lunch only to then solicit me. Just pisses me off.

Maybe I am just being a bitcher….

I actually remember finding a article she had written on the difference between being a self promoter and a shameless self promoter in which she says:

The shameless part is the total disregard for others. In other words, Shameless Self-Promoters see only the game — not the relationship or the other person’s needs.

Hmm pot, kettle, black, ninja.

What do You Buy Your Rich Internet Friends For Christmas

Posted by Jeremy Schoemaker.

Every year about this time (hey I still have 1 shopping day to overnight something) I have the same de lima.

What do I get people for xmas who can afford to buy whatever they want.

Sure I could buy everyone gift cards… or just give them money… more of what they already have too much of? Lame.

I like to give practical gifts. Things that would improve people’s lives or at least what I think would improve their life.

For instance a couple years ago at some conference I noticed Greg and Brian from Best Of The Web had these giant brick like digital cameras. Seriously you could use these things for boat anchors. I got them both small canon cameras .

Last year my friend Dax started shaving his head… but using a regular razor…eeek… Anyone who has ever felt my head knows its as smooth as a babys ass and the reason for that is because of the stuff I use. So I sent him the ShoeMoney head shaving kit.

I normally do not like to send out gift cards or cash but in certain circumstances it works. For instance if a friend of yours just got an iphone then getting them a $50 apple gift card will really come in handy for music and applications they are going to need.

This year I got some very cool gifts that I thought I would share.

GetAds gave me a backpack for christmas that is amazingly awesome.

Its totally geared for the nerdy traveler. Google gave me a backpack about 4 years ago and thats been my traveling companion. Many people have sent me backpacks over the years but ive always gone back to the Google Pack. This one from GetAds is the bomb though. One of my favorite features is how I do not have to take out my laptop at airports anymore.

Facebook gave us one of the more interesting gifts. Its a $75 gift coin to donors choose. Basically they gave us $75 to give to a charity of our choice. Now that’s pretty cool.

So what do you get people who already have everything?

Clash of the Titans: SEO vs Social Media – Who’s Going to be Left

Posted by Dan Martell.

In a recent tweet, Micah Baldwin boldly declared, “If you do SEO for a living, you will be out of business or irrelevant in 3 years.”  For Shoemoney readers (My Definition Of SEO and How The Death Will Play Out) this is not news. We’ve been reading about the death of SEO since the late 1990s when SEO was still very much in its infancy. But lately there’s been something different in the cyber air about the future of SEO and it got me wondering …

In the race for relevancy, could 2010 be the year that SEO is forced to relinquish its organic search throne to give way to the power of search filtered through and against the social graph + geo?

I think so. Here’s why:

Twitter on Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs)

A few weeks ago, Google started testing real-time Twitter search results. That got me ‘hmmm-ing’ like crazy.

If what I saw is what there is, wow. This thing is sooooo easy to game.  Check this out: Let’s say I’m looking for a new dentist. Do I really care about conversations about dentists, from dentists or dentistry in general? No, not really. But what if I could geo-filter those same conversations? Okay, that’s more interesting. Now what if I could add a second filter to these same conversations, only this time showing only those tweeple I’m following on Twitter? Ahhh ….

Are you hmm-ing, too? Now let’s take a look at this …

Social Graph Recommendations

With over 350 million Facebook users and growing, there’s a pretty good chance you have a ton of Facebook friends just a click away. With these incredible numbers, how long do you think Facebook will wait before it announces the complete revamp of its anemic search engine and launches brand-new, totally pumped search engine functionality that will make Google a little weak in the cyber knees? Perhaps it already is. Google’s recent integration of Twitter into its results is evidence of ‘first-strike’ thinking.

So ask yourself – when the search playing field finally becomes level in the not-so-distant future, which engine will be your first choice for research: Facebook or Google?

GEO the Evolution of Local Search

In a tightly woven global world, people still care most their needs at home. It’s the main reason consumers have stubbornly held onto their big yellow phone books, despite all the bells and whistles of Google and its SE brethren. When your toilet stops working, you need a local plumber. When your roof has a leak, you need a local roofer. GEO search technology? Of course! And its where EVERYONE is throwing money and lots of it.

Google Sidewiki

Love it or hate it (and most site owners seem to be crowding into the thumbs-down corner. That includes me, too.), there’s no doubt in my mind that Sidewiki’s ability to allow comments, rants, etc. adjacent to specific sites was done with an eye toward affecting overall search, perhaps even PageRank. By offering yet another way for people to comment and engage in the same space smells like another not-so-thinly-veiled strike against Facebook.

The power of social recommendation certainly isn’t new. Anytime we ask a friend to make a recommendation about anything – a new restaurant, a physician, an awesome new WordPress plugin – we’re using the power of relationship-based word of mouth (WOM). What’s different now, and incredibly exciting, is our ability to expand WOM beyond physical borders, time zones and even face-to-face personal relationships.

Today, everyone is a friend or a potential friend. Wow.

Add the quick hit of Google Adwords, Google Local 10 Pack, and a niche platform sites like Yelp (which Google is negotiating to buy for something like half-a-billion dollars, or maybe not.) Oodle and the upcoming Gowalla & FourSquare turf war (my bet’s on Gowalla) and with startups like SimpleGEO, there’s no doubt that the future of search will change. In fact, it already is. It has to. When you combine the search filter through the Social Graph and add GEO for recommendations, what you deliver are vetted results people will use and trust. Elegant. Simple. Completely awesome.

Stay tuned …

Buying and Selling Trust

Posted by Jeremy Schoemaker.

If you have ever flown United Airlines you have probably seen the Hemispheres magazine. Usually I only look at it to see what movies are playing on the flight or if I need a quick map of the airport but in the newest issue there is a lengthy article about ‘mommy’ bloggers and how they are complete sell outs. You can read the whole article online here.

Basically the article talks about how these mommy bloggers have earned the trust of their readers then get paid to pitch them products… and no disclosure that they are getting paid to do so.

These mommy bloggers have earned trust with their readers and these companies want to buy it.

If there is one thing I have learned in my many years in marketing its that wherever there is trust, there is someone willing to buy it.

Ted Murphy, CEO of Izea, Pay-Per-Post, and Sponsored Tweets provides a platform for people to sell some of their trust. Essentially he is a trust broker. He will allow companies to buy some of your trust with your readers on your blog or your followers via twitter & Facebook.

I have made a decent amount of money doing sponsored posts and tweets. I even made some money arbitraging other people’s trust, taking money from companies and paying people on twitter to say what the company wanted said about their products.

In 2003 buying Google’s trust (people thought they were clicking on search results when they were actually purchased ads) in their search results was an amazing time for marketers… but it quickly got saturated. The same opportunity existed with Yahoo’s and Microsoft’s search platforms when they launched.

Google also provided one of the easiest methods for a website to sell its trust with its users…. via the Google AdSense content network. Google provided a dead simple way for a user to get paid pennies per click for trust they had built up with their readers, all without any editorial control of the ads being displayed on their website.

In a sense Google was one of the first mainstream brokers of “trust”.

I go over in great detail the negatives of using Google AdSense in the ShoeMoney System (video still free here).

As a purchaser of trust I can tell you that currently the social space is by far where we are getting the biggest bang for the buck right now… and probably will be for a long while. Paying a to 10 digger to get a story to the front page of digg is extremely cheap compared to the results. Paying twitter users on sponsored tweets to say whatever you want them to say about your product for as low as 5 cents per click is an amazing investment.

In the ShoeMoney System we also take you step by step through how to make money with Sponsored Tweets. Ways to find the best people to purchase tweets from and get the most bang for your buck (as well as demonstrate live how to make a few hundred dollars a day). Sponsored Tweets has also agreed to give ShoeMoney System users up to $1,000.00 in free tweets. We also have free money from FaceBook, Google, Microsoft, AOL and others… But more on that later…

So how much is your trust worth? I personally feel its possible to sell trust and still maintain and even grow your trust.
