The ShoeMoney Awards?

by Jeremy Schoemaker on November 30, 2009 · 48 comments

Every year about this time I get hammered with emails that I should have a ShoeMoney awards where I give out awards to the best sites and crap…

Here is the thing though I hate that crap. Not to get all egotistical on that stuff but every time some place was having an award I wanted to win I found a way to win it.

Lots of times people ask me why I have never won an affiliate summit award… At first my answer was, “they have awards?”. Not to be a jackass but just because I did not know. Well they do. I would link you but then you would all nominate me and I would win and then thats not fair to the small community they have there that really look forward to winning those awards. Wow that sounds egotistical. Well here is something to bring me back down to earth… maybe I just don’t deserve to be the blogger of the year. Maybe Wayne Porter (who I have never met and have no clue what sites he runs or what he does) is a badass making a difference in the affiliate industry and deserves to win it.

anyway I digress…

So what do you think? Should we have a shoemoney awards? We could call them the…. Shoemonies?

What categories should we have? Give me some good suggestions in the comments and maybe we will end up doing it.

I think that would be fun to have awards. It could do more harm that good though if done poorly.

For categories:
Best NEW Make Money Online site. You’ve been at it for years. How about recognizing newcomers or people who took a different approach. Everybody likes a success story, yours included.

I think it would be a fun idea. But only if you have good awards and bad awards.

Best design
Wrost design
etc

Not sure what it says about me that I’d be more pleased to win an award for worst blog than a award for the best blog. :)

How bout an award for wrost spelling? I think I could definitely get in the top 10!

Well, I think for the bad websites, a simple “Shoe” award would be perfect – a website you want to throw your shoe at. :)

In some countries you might get jail for that.

Or something you scrape off the bottom of your shoe … could make a nice award icon for crappy products / sites :)

awards are mostly silly…its about 1) entering 2) writing a good descrption 3) playing the internal political game or driving to “vote for me” as if it were a teenage popularity contest……the awards most likely serve the benefit of the sponsor in this case you shoe….,so if you do it, and I say why the he’ll not, rate them as Shoe and Money…..and exploit the crap out of other people’s work to promote yourself!!!

So true though. Although not your fault, but if you wanted to win an award, and it was purely based on votes. Then you simply have it down pat.

Kinda like the Ad.ly referral competition :P . Nothing against your following, but anything that is based on the most votes/signups/views is a piece of cake.

sure but I have barely talked about ad.ly not even sent a mailer =P

I think it would be cool for you to give out industry awards from your site, but I think it would be much “better” if you included yourself in some sort of panel that chose the nominees.

That way no one could really game the system and you would shine a light on ppl doing something really cool in the industry that many of your readers would otherwise not know of.

I agree with Bush Mackel about giving out industry awards from your site, and being part of the judging panel (authenticity and all).

Nobody doubts your expertise and experience and handing it over to someone else won’t be the same. It needs Jeremy Shoemaker’s Personal Stamp.

Spotlights would fall on sites with the most improvement in a year, the best money-making ideas, sites that went from top rung to bottom, sites with the most followers, sites that have a great influence ;)

Although you said you dont wanna sound egoistical, but you do:) Think you can afford to do that with all the accomplishments.

ShoeMoney Awards would be a great idea for you for extending your branding. With proper marketing this would be able to catch attention to tons more new readers to your blog and other services you offer. And not to mention, you would be able to cash in significant amount of money as well over the time from the award advertisers.

I’ve got a couple ideas for you Jeremy…

PLAN A:
You’ve got a lot of influence so why not start a “label” of sorts.

1) Start by picking the “10 Upcoming Stars for 2010″ list, then make it annual.

2) Sign those people so that you can share revenue in some way.

3) Polish and produce the ones that show talent and really want to work.

4) Expand the reach by having your new minions promote various segments of your empire. (ala Donald Trump)

5) Keep track of what each one is earning for you throughout the year and post it in a leader board.

Then you will be like P Diddy, Jay-Z, or (insert iconic star maker here) and people will come to you to get launched.

PLAN B:
Create a best/most creative/coolest business ideas for 2010 and put your resources into building the best ones.

If you do something that makes money, more people will be interested as opposed to just doing another lame contest.

You know…Shoe, you should really consider this. I mean you’re obviously extremely successful at this whole blogging thing why not give back and make an impact in anothers blogger’s life (I know you do this already in some ways). But really, basically become a personal advisor to 5 or ten blogs for the next six months. You could even do a case study on them. Could be a really cool way to make an impact and give back if you ask me.

Great idea Denny!

You have to do both best and worst…that’s a necessity.

My Ideas:

1) Most humorous blog & Blog that thinks it’s the most humorous
2) Most egotistical site & most underrated site
3) Site making the most difference in the “real world”, site most harming the “real world”
4) Site/blog most dedicated to ruining men’s lives, Site/Blog most dedicated to ruining women’s lives
5) Site/blog writer you’d most like to have a date with, site blog writer you’d least like to have a date with
6) Most random niche ever blog/site

Good Luck…look forward to the results, and thanks for the tips day after day…narcicist and all ;)

I think you should do it! The more ways you can reward people who are working hard to build a brand the better!

I’ve been working on my blog for two years and every little piece of recognition I get means the world to me.

I know other bloggers are in the same boat and having an award from you would mean a lot to just about everyone!!

Best custom designed shoe awards with the logo shoe money and featured on their blogs with your link on it. Just like Free Shirt Friday in reverse.

Shoeaward/Shoemonies could be given to some sort of crazy/funny/something act that gets tons of traffic/fame/money – or is just plain odd. Pioneering in something.

Like… showing $100k pic first in the world would earn you award.

Something shoelike.

I wouldn’t like the usual type of “who can get most traffic in X days” type of contest. I think there should be the spirit of Shoe seen in the stuff who gets the award.

Part1. Best Startup Idea Award

Allow readers to post startup ideas and give the award to the top voted one. Also select TOP #10 for part 2

Part2. Best Startup site Award

This award goes to the site which implemented the idea of TOP#10 Startup Idea.

It looks like a big idea just like Mashable web award..One category I would like to have would be “Best Community Award” which will be given to blog having best community..

The Best Startup Idea category is also nice one.

I say do something completely different than everyone else. Enough of the overly polished kiss ass type crap. Make a joke out of the award stuff… make it fun instead of the same old same old.

While its not a “bad” idea it sounds very time consuming. My .02 cents would be make it sports related i.e. heisman (those starting out) all the way to mvp (those starting out in the big leagues) – do a match up of people in certain categories. They have ‘x’ amount of days to send in ‘x’ amount of traffic and conversions from ‘x’ lead.

Still…sounds like a lot of work, BUT it could be a great release for the new year. Also, I bet you’d get a lot of people interested in helping out behind the scenes on this *cough*hi*cough* ha!

I saw call them the “Blings”

Don’t waste time having categories and nominations, etc. Shoe’s time is too valuable to do the “me-too” awards format.

I’d be more interested in a list of the standout companies / people / events from She’s perspective. Can be different reasons or categories each year, but just a wrap up of what caught the attention of one of the biggest names in the game.

If it made Shoe look twice, it’s probably worth noting.

Why do Shoey awards just for the sake of doing them? Doesn’t sound like your heart is really into it.

Reply

32 Jeremy Schoemaker December 1, 2009 at 11:07 am

O I am not opposed to doing them and it might be fun. I ran the awards on digitalpoint for a couple years and it was a good time. I just was hoping to have some suggestions

I like the ring of “shoeie.” Do them if you can think of a way to make them fun and offbeat. Make up your own categories and give out awards arbitrarily.

34 Adam Longfellow December 1, 2009 at 11:00 am

I say have fun with it for about ten minutes and give out your own three to five awards.

Best conference to make real deals that limits attendees to about 35 and was held twice this year.
Best conference to have people pitch ideas while pissing.
Best SEO move that transcended or changed genders.
And surely Dennis Yu should win some kind of award this year?

I think you should have a “Best website making fun of people who wear bluetooth headsets all the time regardless of whether they’re on a call or not” category in which case I’d like to nominate my site:
