The ShoeMoney Awards?

Posted by Jeremy Schoemaker.

Every year about this time I get hammered with emails that I should have a ShoeMoney awards where I give out awards to the best sites and crap…

Here is the thing though I hate that crap. Not to get all egotistical on that stuff but every time some place was having an award I wanted to win I found a way to win it.

Lots of times people ask me why I have never won an affiliate summit award… At first my answer was, “they have awards?”. Not to be a jackass but just because I did not know. Well they do. I would link you but then you would all nominate me and I would win and then thats not fair to the small community they have there that really look forward to winning those awards. Wow that sounds egotistical. Well here is something to bring me back down to earth… maybe I just don’t deserve to be the blogger of the year. Maybe Wayne Porter (who I have never met and have no clue what sites he runs or what he does) is a badass making a difference in the affiliate industry and deserves to win it.

anyway I digress…

So what do you think? Should we have a shoemoney awards? We could call them the…. Shoemonies?

What categories should we have? Give me some good suggestions in the comments and maybe we will end up doing it.

Droid, iPhone, BlackBerry – Rock Paper Scissors

Posted by Jeremy Schoemaker.

So, I have had the Droid for 3 weeks now.

There were 3 main reasons I made the switch from my iPhone on AT&T.

1) I suck at typing on my iPhone, I really wanted the full qwerty keyboard of the droid.
2) The Verizon network is awesome.
3) FREEDOM to write my own applications or load whatever I want and also run lots of apps in the background.

It’s cool and powerful and all that. I LOVE the Google integration, it’s amazing. The navigation app is unreal. It is MUCH better than any hardware navigation device I have ever owned. The Verizon network totally smokes AT&T’s, especially on data services. I have written over half-a-dozen super cool applications that run in the background. Yes, I wrote them myself, in Perl. It was dead simple to load them.

I wrote one basic application that turns off my ringer when I set down the phone face-down then turns it back on when I pick it up or turn it face-up. This was really simple to do and there is a how to included in the Google code.

I wrote another application that turns on WiFi when I pull out the keyboard, then turns it off when I push it in.

I wrote another one that checks to see if there are unmoderated comments and if so adds them to my notifications.

The Droid is an amazing piece of technology. But, and I’m not sure exactly how to explain this, the Droid is like a Linux desktop computer. It’s super powerful, totally customizable, but, yet it feels clunky and things crash and it’s hard (in general) to get things to “just work”.

Writing all kinds of cool applications and installing neat stuff that can run in the background comes with a massive resource price. At one time I was using up my battery from full charge to completely dead in less than one hour. That is not talk time, that’s just the phone sitting idle.

Again though, it’s my choice. One thing I was able to write is an application that would check for runaway processes that were hogging the cpu (which happens a lot on the droid) and kill them. I also had code from other scripts to extend the battery as much as possible and was able to get around 3-4 days battery life.

Another thing is that sometimes the droid just becomes unresponsive….. then after 30 seconds or so a window will ask me if I want to wait or kill the process (there is no multitasking while this is going on, the phone is frozen). That is SUPER ANNOYING. On the plus side, I have figured out several of the things that cause this and will describe them in another post coming soon about how to soup up your droid.

As far as the hardware goes, the keyboard is disappointing (which kind of defeated one of the main reasons I got the droid) and makes it a lot more heavy. I have also scraped the paint off of a lot of the edges of my Droid.

droid

Don’t get the wrong idea… I like the Droid a lot.

I am, however, having serious iPhone withdrawl. I miss having my entire music library on my phone. I miss having all my Photos on my phone. I miss having badass games on my phone. I miss having all my videos on my phone. And, yes I *COULD* do all this with the droid (except cool games, there just are none) but with my iPhone it was so easy I even forgot I was doing it. I just plugged my iPhone in and it synced with my photo albums and iTunes. It just worked. The fatal flaw in the iPhone is the AT&T network. After 2 conferences of not being able to use my phone during the show because AT&T can’t handle the data, the iPhone is out. I can’t have my cell phone cost me time and money.

I also really miss some of the aspects of the BlackBerry(s). I can’t type for shit on these touch screens. I had the world phone and the curve under Sprint. I could type like the wind on those phones with the keyboards. Yesterday while my wife was driving she handed me her Blackberry curve to text a friend for her and I fell in love again with the keyboard. I busted out a 160 word text in seconds. I realized how bad I am at typing on the Droid/iPhone and how I longed for the Blackberry keyboard again to actually respond to emails and texts. But the Blackberry for web browsing sucks, and yes, I use my phone for web browsing a lot.

So what to do? I have about 6 days left until my 30 day test/trial/evaluation/get-out-of-your-contract expires with my Droid.

Right now, I am leaning towards keeping my Droid phone and staying on Verizon. I would not however, at this point, recommend it to a non-technical friend. The coolest part about the droid is the amazing flexibility and permissions you have. Including permission to totally fuck it up too. I had had to factory reset my droid twice due to my screw ups.

News that iPhone might be on Verizon soon makes me hard.

Why can’t I have an iPhone with a BlackBerry keyboard on the Verizon network?

More to come on this.

How Being A Good Copywriter Can Make You More Money As A Blogger

Posted by Justin Goff.

If copywriting provokes the image of a hypey sales letter splashed with yellow highlighter, then this post is right up your alley…

As a blogger and a niche copywriter, I’ve noticed that almost every successful blogger uses many of the proven staples of good copywriting. Whether they know it or not, most of them are great salesman and copywriters.

Here’s 5 ways you can become a better blogger and increase your profits in the process by using copywriting and direct marketing principles…

1. Up your prices for your products or services

Most people shutter when they think about upping their prices.

It’s a natural reaction, and one that’s more about overcoming your own internal “blocks” than about overcoming market problems. Over the long haul you can’t win when you try to be the lowest priced option (besides maybe WalMart and even they’re having major problems).

And if you think everyone buys based on price…think again.

How can Starbucks charge $4 for a cup of coffee when McDonald’s coffee is .50 cents? How can Mercedes charge $45k for a car, when a Toyota will serve the same purpose (get you from point A to point B)? How can an internet marketer charge $77 for an ebook when you can get a simliar book on Amazon for $15?

It’s because their story connects with you… Creating a compelling story for yourself in your blog posts is an easy way to connect with your readers which will make it easier to sell to them.

If you have a product or service, there are two main benefits to upping your prices.

  • You attract better clients and users – Think of the difference between people who shop at WalMart vs. Target. Both of the stores are somewhat similar – they sell food, clothes, electronics, housewares etc… Yet Target attracts a more affluent customer who has more money to spend.
  • You have more money to get new customers – The person who charges $9 for an ebook, has a much bigger hill to climb than his competition who sells theirs for $39. If you’re making 4x the profits, you have 4x the money to spend to go out and get new customers. The guy making $9 per sale will have to slowly grow, while the high priced guy can grow much more quickly because he can go out and get new customers much more easily.

So why can internet marketers like Joel Comm and John Reese charge $997 for an info product when others are charging $47? They add tons of value to the package by making it a DVD instead of an ebook. They also add audios and other content that ups the value of the product.

Does their product cost 20x more to make than one that sells for $47? No. It might cost them $30 to produce those DVD’s but they’re able to charge $997 for it because they’ve increased the value and made the offer more appealing to people like us.

I also use this principle for my copywriting jobs. If youwere to hire me, Im not very cheap but I’m very good at writing for specific industries like fitness and making money online. For a normal long page sales letter my prices start at $3950 and I also get a piece of the gross profits.

Of course there are copywriter’s out there who charge $300 for something like this, but I don’t want a client who doesn’t understand that a good sales letter is worth a lot of money to them.

Clients that only care about price are usually the worst clients and they’ll be a bigger hassle than someone for whom price does not matter.

Ok so besides upping the value and increasing your profits, you also need another crucial element if you want to start making more money with your blog…

2. Be a good storyteller

Every one of the big bloggers has a great story to tell…

Shoe was overweight and indebt over $50,000 – now he has a multimillion dollar business with a sweet house, a snazzy pool and a lifestyle that a lot of people would love to have.

My partner Vic on GymJunkies.com was a former lawyer who was sick of all the B.S. fitness advice out there. Vic’s story connects with tons of 25-50 year old men and women who have been mislead and just want something that produces results… As a result our fat loss workouts have sold incredibly well in just a few months time.

One of the main things I suggest people have on their blog is a “My Story” tab (example here). Chris Winfield brought this up to me last year, and since then I’ve seen it grow and many bloggers are using it to help connect with new visitors to their blog…You want to give readers a chance to see your story so that they can connect with you and empathize with the problems you went through.

If you’re overweight and you’ve struggled with people ridiculing you and not ever getting any dates through high school , then reading a story about someone else that has been in that situation AND OVERCAME it will really hit home with you.

This is a major mistake most new bloggers make. They think their audience only cares about information. Your blog posts need to not only be educational but also entertaining as well. Talk about your life, talk about experiences you have.

As an example look at the posts that do well here on Shoemoney.com. Shoe writes about his family, his successes and failures in business and all sorts of things that are entertaining…

If he only wrote PPC guides or SEO advice with no personality in it, his readership wouldn’t be 50,000+ people.

So find a story that resonates with your reader and talk about it on your blog and in you posts as much as you can…

3. Write your posts as if you were talking to just 1 person

In direct response marketing one of the biggest mistakes I see writers make is the tone of their writing is directed at a group instead of a single user.

The person who is reading your blog wants to FEEL that you’re talking directly to them. They want to know that you understand their problem and that you have advice or a solution to help them out.

One of the single most important feelings that anyone can have is the feeling of being truly understood. It’s a feeling most people never have in their life so if you can resonate with them and make them think you really understand their situation, then you can influence their buying decisions pretty easily.

4. Focus on your headlines, call to action and layout

David Ogilvy says that headlines are read by 5x as many people as the body copy. Guess what this means?

Your headlines have to be MONEY if you want them to read the post.

The biggest mistake I see people make with headlines is they try to get cute and clever with their headlines. Your headline’s main focus should be to get your reader to read the rest of your blog post. That’s it.

And the best way to get someone to read your headline is by promising a benefit that your reader wants info on. Headlines that promise specific benefits will ALWAYS do better than a vague headline.

For example…

GOOD – How To Lose 17 Lbs Of Fat In Just 90 Days (With No Bogus Drugs Or Fat Loss Pills)

BAD – How You Can Have A Healthy Looking Body

So make sure your headline is specific and promises a benefit…

Once you have the headline down you need your post to be laid out in a way that makes it easy to read. You should start by staying away from HUGE blocks of text and instead use short sentences and subheadlines to break up the text in your post.

This makes your post easier to read as big blocks of text intimidate people and they’ll just exit the page.

And my last suggestion to get the most out of your posts is to have a clear call to action at the bottom. Whether you want to send them to an affiliate offer, your own product page, an optin page or you just want them to subscribe by RSS you MUST ask them to do it.

No one is going to see your link for your product and assume they should click on it. You need a call to action… Here’s a good example…

“If you liked this post and want to get more like it for FREE, subscribe to my newsletter and I’ll send you an email update each time I make a new post.”

Then you can link that statement (or just a few words in it) to your newsletter optin page…

Every post or article you publish should have a call to action in it.

5. Smack your readers in the face with TONS of social proof

If you watch an infomercial or read a good sales letter, you’ll notice they always have 1 thing in common… testimonials.

What someone else says about your business is 1000x more valuable than anything you can say about it. You need real success stories and testimonials from people just like your readers who have had success with your product or who like your blog.

You can use this with your blog in a number of ways…

  • Success stories – for my fitness site whenever we get a good success story emailed to us, we usually post it on the blog and feature that person as a “star”. They’re an everyday normal person who got good results with our workouts so we want our readers to see that. You can do this for literally ANY niche… And our readers love to see these stories. It gives them a lot of motivation to read these.
  • Media appearances – Aaron Wall does a great job at this with his blog… The right hand nav bar has tons and tons of respected media outlets that he has appeared in. A new reader on his blog will instantly realize this guy knows what he’s talking about and immediately trust him. When I get inquiries about consulting, most people instantly trust me when they hear I’ve written copy for companies on the Inc Magazine 500 and some of the best selling products on Clickbank. Those are instant trust builders.
  • Association with industry leaders – If you came to my personal blog and had no clue who I was but you saw pictures of me with Shoe, Frank Kern, Brian Clark and Darren Rowse you would immediately think I’m a big time internet marketer. If you have ANY relationship with respected leaders, make sure your readers know it.

Social proof and testimonials are the most effective but underused marketing strategy online.

Wrap up

Being a successful blogger won’t happen overnight. If you follow some of the principles I outlined above you’ll be ahead of 95% of the crowd. If you’re just getting your blog started my last guest post on here will be helpful to you… It’s the story of how I went from 0-350 visitors per day in just one month on my blog.

If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments I’ll be around to answer them. If you’d like to hire me for a copywriting project shoot me an email justingoff {at}gmail.com or check out my personal blog

Big Changes In The Amex Centurion Black Card?

Posted by Jeremy Schoemaker.

I was reading on flyer talk forums that maybe people are now not able to get the American Express Centurion card.

The thread is actually many pages long but the gist of it is…  evidently until October 15th of this year you just needed to spend 250k in a rolling 12-month period.  We were invited to the program but I still did not think the $5k was worth it.

Then, on their 3rd attempt they offered to waive the $5k fee so we enrolled.  We were already paying for Platinum cards and priority passes at airports (we layover a lot due to flying out of Lincoln Nebraska) so that alone was about 75% of the annual fee of the Black Amex.

It has been interesting finally getting the African-American Express (Kanye West line).  There are a lot of myths and BS out there about what you actually get and how the perks work.

But I digress…

Anyway so if you read deep enough into the story it says that when Amex lowered the spend limits and stuff some of the partners started lowering the value of the perks… and the super high end people who did pay the crazy fees got mad… which is obviously very understandable.

So if you tried to get a Black Amex after Oct 15th and got denied you are not alone.  It will be interesting to see what happens.

Getting Out Of Your Element

Does your day seem to just fly by? Do you ever find yourself doing 9000 things but not getting any of them done (all Swedish no Finnish) ?

Maybe its time to change it up a bit.

Mixing up your computer workstation

No matter if you are a windows, mac, or linux user its pretty easy to change up your computing environment.

While its cool to have 2 giant 30 inch monitors attached to my computer its also a massive distraction to have WordPress, Email, IRC, AIM, Skype, Facebook, and Twitter reloading every second telling me if there is updates. This will also drain your work time.

They say for every distraction it takes 22 minutes to get back to what you were working on… (I actually stopped writing to look that up and it took me over a hour to get back to this post cause I got distracted with email… ironic!)

Often times when I need to get something done I take a super bare bones laptop (we have a really old dell at the office) into the conference room, shut the door, and bust it out. Our staff knows when I am in there with the door shut not to bother me. This bare bones computer often times does not even have internet access. All I need is a text editor, photoshop, and/or a WYSIWYG HTML editor because 99% of the time I am writing a article, sketching out something, or building a concept landing page for one of our affiliate offers.

But you do not HAVE to have a separate computer to do this. Sometimes just mixing up your operating system getting you out of your normal element helps a ton. For instance install Linux on your mac/pc. Boot into that when you want to get out of your element.

Mixing up work locations

A lot of times I just need to change up my work environment to gain inspiration. In today’s awesome world we can take a $300 netbook to just about anywhere around town and have a pseudo office outside of our element.

My favorite pseudo offices with free wifi are Barnes and Noble, Starbucks, McDonalds, Chipolte, and… wait for it… Hooters!

Conferences Out Of Your Element

I used to love to go to all the SEO based conferences. For several years I never missed one. But then I branched out into performance marketing conferences… and now into Venture Capital conferences and events. With each one I started just a regular attendee but after 3-4 events you get to know people… or they get to know you rather. You get comfortable in your circle of friends and you rarely venture out of it. This is when I like to change it up a bit. I can’t tell you how many awesome connections and deals I have made getting outside of my conference element.

So whether its your computer, work environment, or social environment hopefully you are venturing out of your comfort zone and trying new things. If you are not please try it. Trust me!

Spammer selling ShoeMoney Info… and a bridge

If you have a contact form or your email is public somewhere odds are you have gotten this message. Judging from the 300 or so emails we have gotten letting us know about it I am guessing its pretty widespread:

Subject: Shoemoney Data

Hi,

My name is Dominic Fernandez, and I came across your contact information
while reading through The ShoeMoney Blog. I don’t know your opinion of his
advice, but I think his advice is very insightful and obviously very
profitable if applied to the right opportunity.

Finding the right opportunity however is something Jeremy does not dwell on
too much, and does not mention (with good reason) most of the current
opportunities he is working on.

In an effort to find a great opportunity to earn money with I have sourced
the list of all Websites owned by Shoemoney (3400+ Domains). I need to raise
a little extra funds to complete the transaction and hence I will be making
a few copies of this data available for sale. I obviously do not want too
many copies of this Data to get out and hence will be limiting the sale to
only a select few people.

If you are interested in this Data, let me know and we can discuss the
matter further.

Thank you,

Dominic
domrfernandez@gmail.com

Feel free to purchase the list from Dominic. It should be pretty awesome… especially considering I dont own 3400 domains… or even close to it.

Thanks to all who have contacted us about this. People try to profit all the time off our brand =(. Its the way it goes… If someone actually gets this persons real information I would love to have it.

BlitzLocal’s Dennis Yu Worse Person Than Originally Thought

The post I wrote was the longest post ever written on ShoeMoney.com. Over 4,000 words. This guy is a very dangerous person and I wanted to tell the entire story in as much detail as possible even if some of it was really embarrassing to me. You CAN’T give con men any room to go anywhere and the only real way to stop them is to get the truth out.

Dennis has issued a response and as you can tell it’s all fluff about how he is only being attacked because he is hurting the industry. Which is strange because my post was not about that… it was about my personal dealings with him and he does not dispute anything I said… or anything that anyone in the comments said. Facts are a bitch like that though.

A flood of emails and calls came in from people telling me about their personal dealings with him. Everyone from former employees to large companies. The allegations go all the way up to some very serious criminal offenses.

Also people commented and emailed me pointing me to Dennis’ current list of Advisors to his company.

I was also asked by some mainstream press and companies about the advisers listed and if I knew their specific roles and equity positions in the company.

The list includes:

Gillian Muessig – Founder/Owner SEOMOZ
Stephen Spencer – Net Concepts
Todd Malicoat – Internet Business Consultant

I reached out to them and pointed them to my post. They made it VERY clear to me that they did not know Dennis very well and will be addressing this soon.

I will tell you Gillian, Stephen, Todd, and DK are very good honorable people. I have known them for years and in most of their cases 5+ years.

I am sure they had no idea of the Spam/Scam/Porn empire Dennis was running and played no advisory role in any of that. I hope as the criminal proceedings on Dennis come out their names will stay out of it in the press because obviously unlike Dennis they will be big targets because of their status in the industry.

I also do not believe any of them are investors or hold any equity at all in the company but again they can clear that up if they need to.

The only investor in BlitzLocal I can confirm is Plenty Of Fish founder Markus Frind.

About half dozen companies that called me stated that Dennis was trying to extort money from them saying he was going to use their company as the next example on a TechCrunch post if they did not pay them. The evidence of that is pretty amazing also from what I have seen. This is criminal extortion.

There is also many people who said Dennis told them he has 4 other posts ready to go for Techcrunch. Well, just so happens I know Mike Arrington and asked him about it and he replied with this:

I haven’t spoken to him, there are certainly no additional posts that we’ve discussed. So, not true at all if in fact he’s actually saying that.

I am not a lawyer but please listen to me and take this advice. If Dennis is trying to extort money from you, go to the FBI right now. You are not alone. TRUST ME. Also, feel free to contact me privately (jeremy(at)shoemoneydotcom) and I will hook you up with the others Dennis has tried to extort.

This also includes current & previous BlitzLocal employees with knowledge of criminal activity. I will keep your identity anonymous.

Do not let this piece of trash intimidate you.

I am currently sorting through evidence of some of these alleged extortion attempts and other stuff by Dennis & BlitzLocal and will be posting more as I can. Much more to follow.
