Robert Drysdale (Thinktank 2009 Recap)

by Jeremy Schoemaker on October 6, 2009 · 37 comments

DK’s 2nd Thinktank a couple weeks ago in Del Mar California was a great event but by far the highlight for me was meeting one of my hero’s Robert Drysdale.

Robert is one of the if not THE greatest Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter ever. He has won 6 world titles and over 90 tournament victories. He is the current Abu-Dhabi world champion. He is one bad mother.

At Thinktank Robert showed us all kinds of moves and let each of us “roll” with him on the ground if we wanted. It was really awesome.

Then I get home and 2 days later I saw this commercial on ESPN featuring Robert for TapOut:

HOW GODAMN AMAZING IS THAT FLYING TRIANGLE & ARMBAR!!!!!!

Anyway at Thinktank it was fun to learn some more moves from the best in the biz. Here is one of me tapping out Robert to knee bar:

Here is a video I shot with Robert working with David that shows a lot of what he was doing with everyone:

David giving respect:

Jonah Stein putting it on em:

If you check out DK’s site you will see some of the biggest players in the SEO/Affiliate space being put in some of the funniest movies by Robert. And some hold their own a bit like Tony Adam (formally of yahoo!).

Robert stuck around the rest of the day to shoot the shit and even do some surfing with us. I introduced my 3 year old daughter to him and he was really awesome talking to her.

I also gave a open Q&A discussion at Thinktank that I think went over pretty well:

Props to DK for throwing such a great event and thank you to Robert Drysdale for being such a awesome guy.

I gotta say hanging out with Robert at the thinktank was amazing, the guy is so nice and laid back. I plan on checking out his gym in Vegas during ASW.

Braulio Estima is actually the current ADCC absolute champ, Drysdale won last year securing a darce choke on Marcelo Garcia. This year he just had a super fight with Jacare.

I could be wrong but I was under the impression Robert won the 2007 title and the open weight class event only happens every 2 years and has not taken place yet

Ya the 2009 just happened, Braulio beat Xande Ribeiro (injury) to secure the absolute this year. Nonetheless Drysdale is a BAMF

The event was amazing and meeting Robert was even cooler. The most amazing part about him is that nothing felt rushed, he was emotional as if he were playing chess or something, just moving limbs and bodies around like it was nothing. And best of all, he is remarkably humble for someone who has accomplished as much as he has.

you need to do something with the video’s widths..they’re too large for the current design.

I agree with Jeremy; that was awesome. RD is very strong and soooo incredibly smooth with his transitions. I think a more appropriate word would be Ridiculous. He made me feel like it was my first day as a white belt. It was such an honor.

It’s nice to see that MMA fighters and professional marketers can mix it up for a good cause. Keep up the good work with Fighters.
