Great To See Everyone At Affiliate Summit East NYC 2009

by Jeremy Schoemaker on August 13, 2009 · 63 comments

Had a great time at Affiliate Summit East. Conference was totally packed with people. Also nice to see a lot of old school friends from the search industry making their way into the performance marketing space. Many of which skipping on SES San Jose (the search industries flagship conference) for the first time in half a decade to attend Affiliate Summit East (they are the same week this year).

One of the most interesting things was constantly having people come up to me and tell me how much they love my site (head swells) and how they check it before they buy anything online (now I am confused….. then I figure out they think I am with retailmenot.com who paid over $11,000.00 to charity for me to wear their shirt for the entire conference. I was amazed at hear the stories of how much money people saved by using that site. Very happy to be associates with you retailmenot !!

The parties at ASE were incredible. Attendees literally could choose from many amazing social events every night.

On Saturday Night Eli from bluehatseo hosted a UFC party in his monstrous suite at the London Hotel. The party was sponsored Sybarite Elite affiliate network (see Bryan I did not forget!).

Sunday was the meet market day. John Chow has some great video of the event:

I also did a video with the lovely Michelle Feldman who I bought her shirt for charity for a very very very low cost of three hundred some dollars (incredible investment for all the photos/videos she took).

The meet market is a great informal event where all the companies and affiliates get to network. I did not go to last years ASE in Boston but I was there 2 years ago in Miami and holy crap has this thing grown. It was standing room only.

I took it easy on Sunday night because I had a 8am meeting the next morning with Random House books about something that might get published yet… but more on that later… I missed the shareasale party and other events but I heard it was awesome. I did goto dinner with good friends at Carmellos sponsored by Blitzlocal and SEOMOZ. Incredible Italian food…. Coming out of the eatery I spotted ELMO taking pictures with people. I knew my 3 year old would shit if she saw me with ElMO so I had to do it:

elmo

Then I went back to the hotel and to bed.

At 10am the show floor opened. This is the 2nd event we had a booth/table for our ShoeMoney Tools and I was ready for it this time. We had a great video playing and I was talking to people about the tools. We learned a lot from our first booth last January on what not to do and this one went much better.

Later Monday night after 6 hours on my feet pitching tools from our booth we went retired to change (well I did’nt change cause I was representing retailmenot) then went to the AzoogleAds gathering for a few hours before heading to
Del Friscos for dinner.

After Del Friscos we were invited by Atrinsic in their VIP bottle service booth to watch Biz Markie at the Touch club in NYC. IMA be honest. If you looked up washed up 1 hit wonder rapper in the dictionary you should see a picture of biz. He sang his 1 song then was like PEACE IM OUT! It was a lot of fun though hanging out with folks where we could actually talk. Great to see the PepperJam network girls in the Atrinsic VIP booth. I also ventured over to the GetAds VIP area to talk to my boy George and team. Sorry if I spilled a drink on anyone…. rumors are I was pretty inebriated.

Tuesday was d-day for me. I got up to work our booth and felt like death warmed over. My cold/flu hit me full blast. But I bucked up and pulled down booth duty and closed like I had the GlenGary leads. COFFEES FOR CLOSERS ONLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After the booth area closed I went back to my hotel and I shit you not I slept from 5pm until I had to leave the next morning.

Congrats to Missy and Shawn on an amazing event. See you all in January!

“First prize is a Cadilac El Dorado, 2nd prize….a set of steak knives. 3rd prize is you’re fired!”. I only know that line because when I was sick one time I had the TV Guide channel on and it kept replaying that trailer bc it was on PPV.

I’ve probably repeated that line to 30 people and nobody has ever been able to guess what movie it’s from.

Nice… I wish I could make it this year. I see that January ASW registration is opened and looks like its gonna be in Vegas… Maybe it would be a good time to combine vacation and attending a conference. :-D
Great videos and review, makes me feel bad for skipping it. :)

Shoe-

Do you have a way of tracking the signups that you were able to convert directly from the conference?

it would be great to see what kind of results you got.

Sure people either signed up right there or they used a special promotional code.

well it was a homeless guy charging $5 per picture… he probably did about 15 pics while I was there. We were guessing he pulls down about 80-150 a hour. Not bad

I need to remember to bring Elmo suit on the next event. :) Will you give me $5? hehehe

That is indeed a handsome amount to be earned by a “Homeless guy”.
So this means that such events also serve the purpose of giving a home to a “homeless guy”.

The best contemporary monologue in American film. Baldwin was robbed by AMPAS for not getting Best Supporting Actor for this staggering perf. With this monologue (which was written for the film and not in the original play), Baldwin blows the likes of Jack Lemmon, Kevin Spacey, Ed Harris and even absent Al Pacino right off the screen. Majestic, profane, and utterly unforgettable. Great job, Alec!

The videos show that you guys had a good time. I am sure the first timers and the others would have been able to enjoy some constructive advice from you.
I should say that such events add to the otherwise online mentoring that people get from successful people like you. And when we see such videos and photographs, we are able to set goals for ourselves.

I think that affiliate marketing, online marketing, and online new business should be something that everyone should no about.
With the economy being what it is, I am learning my lessons so that the next time everything goes into the crapper I’m not looking for work, i’m retired and living well.

51 Domaineering Pays Off August 17, 2009 at 1:52 am

Besides affiliate skills there’s also “domaineering” which is the web-based marketing business of acquiring and monetizing Internet domain names focusing on their use specifically as an advertising medium rather than primarily speculating on domains as intellectual property investments for resale as in domaining where generating advertising revenue is considered more of a bonus while awaiting a sale. In essence, the domain names function as virtual Internet billboards with generic domain names being highly valued for their revenue generating potential derived from attracting Internet traffic hits from natural type-in address bar searches. Revenue is earned as potential customers view pay per click ( PPC ) ads or the Internet traffic attracted may be redirected to another website. Hence, the domain name itself is the revenue generating asset conveying information beyond just functioning as a typical web address. As the value here is intrinsically in the domain name as an information carrying vehicle and not in a website’s products or services, these domains are developed for advertising, ( i.e, “parked” ), and not into “conventional” websites. As with traditional advertising, domaineering is part art and part science. Often to be the most effective as an advertising tool, the domain names and their corresponding landing pages must be engineered or optimized to produce maximum revenue which may require considerable skill and keen knowledge of search engine optimization ( SEO ) practices, marketing psychology and an understanding of the target market audience, including demographics. Domaineering generally utilizes a firm offering domain parking services to provide the sponsored “ad feed” of a word or phrase searched for thus creating a mini-directory populated largely by advertisers paying to promote their products and services under a relevant generic keyword domain often found through direct navigation. Occasionally content is added to develop a functional mini-website. Ethical domaineers contend that their product, i.e., “domain advertising”, is a bona fide offering of goods or services in and of itself which provides rights to and legitimate interests in the generic domains they use. This serves as a rebuttal or defense in addressing occasional spurious accusations of cybersquatting on trademarks. Domaineers and some of those who advertise online using generic keywords believe domaineering provides a useful, legal and legitimate Internet marketing service while opponents of domaineering decry the practice as increasing the ubiquitous commercialization of the world wide web. Domaineering aka “domain advertising” is practiced by both large organizations which may have registered hundreds or even thousands of domains to individual entrepreneurial minded domaineers who may only own one or a few. The earliest known verifiable identification and defining of domaineering as a distinct Internet advertising practice is attributed to Canadian Professor William Lorenz.

I am amazed that Eli was in the same conference as you and John Chow, given what he has said in the past.

I wish I could get his talk- well the frustating thing is that he is a serious coder but occasionally you can use his methods without coding.

Did he speak in code or did people understand what he was saying?
