Talking Acai Berry Scams On The ShoeMoney Show

Posted by Jeremy Schoemaker.

Season 6 of the ShoeMoney Radio Show on webmaster radio kicked off last week.

With all the recent hubub about Oprah and dr Oz and others suing the companies I wanted to get the low down from a insider.

I asked Mark Olsen of Acai Soda to come on the show to talk about the issues. Mark has many years in the space and shed a lot of light on who and what is in trouble.

Mark also really opened my eyes to how huge of an issue fraud is for the continuity people as a whole.

$75 Myspace Myads Coupon For New Users and $50 For Existing

Posted by Jeremy Schoemaker.

Man I can’t believe the amount of coverage my case study on cash for clunkers has been getting. Its quite humbling. I have been contacted by a number of major media outlets about how the local affiliate program works and have seen the link shared quite a bit on twitter and other social networks. You guys rock!!

MySpace even reached out and asked me if there was anything they could do for our readers. I gave them some honest feedback- Every new user was super grateful for the free $75 they are offering to get started ( code SHOE75 ) but there are a lot of existing users that were disappointed that they could not get free money also to play around with in the MySpace MyAds system.

They told me they have never, ever, given incentives to existing users (and honestly I have never seen any platform ever do this before) but they would be willing to do this for ShoeMoney readers!

All you have to do is email them myads@myspace.com and give them your account name (login), first and last name and tell them you were referred by ShoeMoney and the MyAds team will hook you up with a $50 advertising credit.

They are only making this offer good until this Friday at midnight PST so get on it!

Cashing in on Cash For Clunkers With Myspace

Posted by Jeremy Schoemaker.

Have I told you enough about the local affiliate opportunities? Well here is real life case study we just completed.

About 4 weeks ago when the cash for clunkers program was about to start I saw it as a great opportunity to drive leads to a local car dealership. We have a great relationship with Huber Chevrolet in Omaha Nebraska so I called them up and setup a meeting with them.

The Pitch

When you approach companies about driving leads to them its always best if you already have a relationship with them. I can tell you right now if you think you can cold call or walk in asking for the manager of a business its going to be a hard, if not an impossible sale. Like you, since birth I have built relationships by using the services of dentists, optometrists, lasek eye surgeons, bariatric surgeons, plastic surgeons, plumbers, roofers, lawn mowers, photographers, wedding cake makers, and of course car dealerships just to name a few. All of these businesses can benefit dramatically from internet leads.

In this case it was our local friendly car dealership. Now we have purchased many vehicles with them over the years and they knew that I did “computer stuff” but nothing specific.

During the initial meeting I asked a lot of questions.

  • On average how much is a sale of a car worth to you?
  • Every time a salesman phone rings with a new lead what is that worth to you?
  • If I were to send you emails of people who filled out a form online with their name, email and phone number what would those leads be worth to you?

They were pretty fourthcoming with the information. Most companies, especially performance driven commission businesses, will know what these numbers are. If a company has not figured out what a new customer is worth to them…. Its possible you maybe want to help them figure that out first. In fact I would actually say that.

Me: What is a new customer worth to you?
Them: We have no idea.

Me: Are you really serious about growing your business?

That is a service in itself but thats for another post.

By the end of the meeting Huber Chevrolet told me about how they had a separate sales division that did nothing but answer phone calls and emails from internet leads and they valued each of those at XX (they asked me not to reveal the specifics).

I told them I would charge them $10 per internet lead (a small fraction of what they are currently paying) but with the condition I could publish a lot of the data on my case study (what your reading). I also told them I wanted to exclusively use MySpace for this test because in past ones we mainly focused on Facebook for driving social network traffic. I really like the super advanced targeting features of MySpace MyAds. They allowed us to target not only cities but specific zip codes. In addition to the geographic targeting we could also target people who were interested in cars or whatever else we thought would convert well.

They were pretty excited to get started. That night I registered hubercash4clunkers.info and had our designer make 4-5 different versions of the landing page rotating through Google’s Website Optimizer to see which one converted the best. Here was the winner converting at 74% (not to bad):

Then we had a bunch of ads made… something like 4-5 per size (there is 3 sizes on MySpace).

Here was the one that converted the best and we ran with:

Our average CPC for this ad was AMAZINGLY low. 13 cents per click on average for over 800 clicks which converted to about 600+ total leads.

Now at $10 per internet lead coming to us its not hard to see how crazy profitable this is.

There is currently a HUGE dislocation for these social networks…. especially in the local space. SO GET ON IT!!!

Playing Defense Gets You No Where

Posted by Jeremy Schoemaker.

desktop tower defense

Many times once people/companies achieve success they put up walls to hoard and protect their spoils. But those same walls prevent you from making progress and parlaying your success into something bigger.

About 2 months ago I wrote about playing with the houses money. In that post I talked about my numerous experiences leveraging successes into bigger and better things.

Recently I have gotten tons of emails and comments asking for my take on the whole Yahoo selling out to Microsoft.

I think this is a perfect example of what happens when you play defense.

Lets first go back in history for the peole who don’t know.

Yahoo Search was originally powered by Google Search and monetized by Google Adwords. In 2001 Google’s Co-founders offered to sell the search Engine to Yahoo for 1 Billion dollars. Yahoo passed on the deal.

In 2002 Yahoo purchased the Inktomi search engine.

In 2003 Yahoo purchased they purchased Overture Services, Inc., which owned the AlltheWeb and AltaVista search engines. Overture also had a great revenue generating “in search results” contextual feed.

In 2004 Yahoo came out strong with its own search engine now utilizing the purchased companies algorithms and monetization of the contextual feed. Yahoo’s search monetization product (overture) was so strong that it was also powering Microsoft’s Search.

But it all went down hill from there as Yahoo! went on the defense. They never again would make a serious move in the search industry. As years passed by Google and Microsoft came out swinging with new products to greatly increase (and sometimes decrease) the user experience. But Google and Microsoft kept trying to build a better product.

Yahoo! sat on its ass and steadily lost market share and also Microsoft as a client for its overture product.

Last year they even gave up on their own product and started mixing in Google Adwords to monetize their own search results.

Now in their recent deal with Microsoft they are giving up search results on their core properties and basically gutting the companies core.

All because they decided to settle and play defense.

I think Bing is a great product and now that Google is the new Microsoft in terms of anti-trust watch dogs Microsoft is in a excellent position to gain some serious market share.

Playing defense gets you no where. Yahoo should have hedged its bet and purchased Google way back in 2001. Ya I know what your thinking… “Sure its easy to say that now”. But cmon Yahoo was POWERED by Google then.

Yahoo also purchased flickr which is a pretty awesome service…. but what are they doing with it? Nothing….

Yahoo also purchased delicious bookmarking service but what are they doing with it? Nothing….

Meanwhile there competition is passing them by.

But lets get off Yahoo!. At every conference I run into a new kid who tripped over a rock and fell into a pile of money. Lets say its with promoting weight loss… or dating… it doesnt really matter… Its always the same story.

But instead of leveraging their position and playing with the houses money they put up walls…. and when they go broke they start a blog or contribute on forums and become super bitter because nobody pays attention to them.

Are you playing defense?

Giving 11k To The Lincoln Nebraska People City Mission

Posted by Jeremy Schoemaker.

This morning we went down to present the 11,100.00 check to the Lincoln Nebraska Peoples City Mission homeless shelter.

The money was raised from my t-shirt auction for Affiliate Summit East 2009 won by coupon code giant retailmenot.com.

After the check presentation we got a tour of the People City Mission from Pastor Tom. The place is pretty amazing for a homeless shelter.

To start with over 90% of their money comes from private donations. They refuse to take government money in most situations because of the bureaucratic strings that come attached. Pastor Tom said, “the government has a certain way they like to do things and its not our way. We are an entrepreneurial homeless shelter. We have been running on private money for over 100 years and we make each dollar go a long way.” Over 80% of every dollar contributed goes directly to its occupants. That is a pretty insane margin for a homeless shelter.

As we continued the tour i was amazed at how much stuff they do in addition to just providing shelter to homeless people. They have a full health care clinic including surgery center and even dentists. All of this care is 100% free to ALL CITIZENS OF LANCASTER COUNTY who are uninsured!

That blew me out of the water. We have better than “universal health” care running right here in Lincoln Nebraska and its all run by a private organization and private money.

I honestly did not know that much about the Peoples City Mission other then I have a good friend who’s mother is a resident there but I am sure glad we choose it for our benefactor!

How Not To Buy Sponsored Tweets

Posted by Jeremy Schoemaker.

Since I last talked about making money with twitter a couple weeks back I have completed 7 “sponsored tweets” on sponsoredtweets.com for just less than $2,000.00…. not exactly enough to quit my day job but worth it none the less.

Listen up advertisers. When you are buying tweets on sponsored tweets let the tweeter write the ad for you. I can tell you right now the ones that I write versus the canned ones you try to write get 3-4x more clicks.

This is because I know my audience and they know me…. and they know when its not me and that converts like ass.

Also you still get final approval/rejection before it goes out. So why not let the person write the tweet for the most conversions?

Cutting Through The Affiliate Network Bullshit

Posted by Jeremy Schoemaker.

affiliate network bullshit

At Affiliate Summit there were at least 150 Affiliate Networks. Not all had booths some were just sharks in the crowd. The one thing you will always notice is every affiliate you meet is a “Super Affiliate”, making millions a month ballin out of control, and every Affiliate Network you talk to has the best offers, highest paying offers, fastest payments, etc, etc…

So how do you sort through the bullshit? Being I am not a network I don’t really care. Someone who comes up and tells me they are a super affiliate making millions a month I give the same amount of respect to as someone who comes up and tells me they are living out of their car trying to learn how this business works.

The Affiliate Network side though has a bigger impact on our business so I try to cut through the BS with them and in the last 6 years I have come up with a pretty good system.

If you were at the Affiliate Summit I am sure at some point you were approached and the conversation went something like the following:

Affiliate Network: Hey John, what do you do?

John: I am an affiliate!

Affiliate Network: What do you promote?

John: Weightloss, grants, dating, ringtones, whatever.

Affiliate Network: You should run with us we have the highest payouts, super fast payments, and best converting offers.

Now most people are not sure where to go from here. I know I didn’t when I first started. I remember back in 2005 when we were slingin ringtones for 15$ a lead and out of the blue an Affiliate Network offered us $25 a lead. We jumped all over that but soon realized it was junk when we made 20% less per click.

And that’s what its all about – EPC (Earnings Per Click).

So Here is how my conversation goes now:

Affiliate Network: Hey Jeremy, what do you do?

Me: I am an affiliate!

Affiliate Network: What do you promote?

Me: Weightloss, grants, dating, ringtones, whatever.

Affiliate Network: We have the greatest ringtone offer ever you should run it with us!!!.

Me: Listen don’t waste my time. I am currently making $1.50 EPC how much can you beat that by? Are you confident you can beat our current payout.

Affiliate Network: absolutely we can beat that epc. Like I said we have THE BEST PAYING OFFERS

Me: How much EPC do you think we could make with your offer?

Affiliate Network: 1.80 at least.

Me: Ok lets do this. I will send you over a contract that guarantees us a min 1.80 EPC and lets test it for a week.

Now its time for them to shit or get off the pot. I have had many networks take me up on this and sometimes it does work out (usually to my amazement). Some might only want to do a 24 hour test. Its up to you what you want to accept… personally I don’t like going through all the crap of getting in a new network and switching out links just to find out it does not work (which happens most of the time). If you are going to waste my time I want to atleast get paid for it ;)

So what tips do you have for cutting through the Affiliate Network pitch BS ?

The Keyword Minute Report

Posted by Jeremy Schoemaker.

4 years ago I wrote a pithy post about a awesome keyword tool I discovered called SEO Elite. The software was written by Brad Callen and was a huge game changer for me in the world of SEO. Brad then jumped into the pay per click space and dropped Keyword Elite a few years back and sold tons of copies of that as well .

Now Brad is about to release Keyword Elite 2.0 and like all good marketers he is putting out a free report. I rarely recommend these “guru” reports because they are all about getting leads to sell the product and generally are junk.

But this new one from Brad is super legit. No matter if you buy keyword elite or not you gotta go check out his 100% free “Keyword Minute” report. The report gives up some great strategies that will make the most seasoned PPC marketer say hmmmm.

I think You Might Have Shiny Ball Syndrome

Posted by Guest.

Shiny ballThis is a guest post by Jonathan Volk, a 20-something internet marketer who makes millions of dollars a year online.

When it comes to internet marketing and working at home in general, one of the most common problems is shiny ball syndrome. In fact, I’d be willing to bet that most people reading this post have this problem!

Don’t worry, it’s not an STD or some disease passed through the air… it’s actually much worse and it comes from our inherent nature to want to do something different.

So what is this shiny ball syndrome that I speak of? It’s seeing or thinking of that next new idea (the shiny ball) and abandoning your current projects to pour into a new project that you just KNOW is going to be a winner. Forgetting all the work you have poured into the last project, you pursue that next new idea never to return to the old project.

I have a friend for example who I have worked closely with on some projects. The other day he showed me a website he was designing in order to sell some amazon products and get the 4% referral commission.

This was less than a week ago.

This morning he was asking me questions; questions about a new market. “I want to go after this new market…”, he said. And while this is commendable that he has found a new idea to market to, the old Amazon store he had poured hours into was going to end up in a net gain of zero.

This is a classic case of shiny ball syndrome. You start working on a project, but before you can even finish, you move onto the next thing.

Heck, even to this day, I am guilty of doing that at times, but I’ve gotten a lot better by using a few easy techniques.

Solving Shiny Ball Syndrome

Solving shiny ball syndrome easier to say than do but with a little effort and persistence you can solve this issue.

  1. Write a to do list and prioritize. – Nearly every day, I write a to do list both for myself and my staff. I prioritize what is most important to get done and what is less important. I write an A1, A2, A3, etc next to top priority and B1, B2, B3 next to those that are of less importance.
  2. Email can be a time sucker. – What I do is I open my inbox and open all emails that are important. I read the first line and in my head rank if they are important or not. Important emails I respond to right away. Unimportant emails I keep open, minimized to my task bar for review during times when I am on a break or after I finish important tasks. This way I do not get distracted by new ideas and opportunities before I have finished the tasks I needed to complete.
  3. New Ideas – When you think of new ideas it’s important to remember that most good ideas will still be around tomorrow. If you never finish a project / website to the full extent you originally designed for it to be and yet move onto the next project, chances are, you probably won’t make much money like that online. Instead try to focus on what you have going. Heck, even if it only makes a little bit in comparison to your next project, at least it’s something. Compare that with the zero you probably would have if you did not complete it.

In reality, whether you’re an SEO, a PPC marketer, a social marketer, an ecommerce store or just try to make money online in any way possible, one of the most important things is focus. Focus on the projects you have going. Complete them and see them all the way through. If the idea truly turns out to be a dud, then stop work on it and move onto the next project / idea.

And remember, sometimes it’s less about trying to hit the lottery and make the next twitter or facebook as it is just building an income FIRST and through experience building something even greater.
