What I Dont Understand About Twitter Followers

by Jeremy Schoemaker on June 30, 2009 · 172 comments

Here is the thing I don’t get about twitter.

People follow people they are interested in and want to know what they are doing (unless I am missing something).

What I don’t get is why people follow me, but then bitch about what I say… repeatedly…. and often times will say “Who gives a shit” in response to my tweets. Well I guess you do jackass or you would not follow me.

Here is a good example… Last Friday I went with my wife and daughter (it was my daughters birthday) and she REALLY wanted me to get my toenails painted.

So I put up a twitpic of it:

Share photos on twitter with Twitpic

and this jackass incredibill who has been following me for years but is always the first one to bitch comes out with:

Now don’t get me wrong. I am all for free speech and if this failure at life wants to spout his bigoted comments at me then go ahead. He is one of many that like to make personal insults I receive every day. I am a big boy and have put myself (and my toes) in the public spotlight.

What I don’t understand is why people devote there resources to following people they do not like.

Maybe someone can explain it to me?

Simple: They follow you because they think you’re going to to tweet all your secrets to success and are disappointed to learn that you’re actually a human being with other interests.

Only some unreasonable things can be explained with reason. Most can’t. Just ignore them, and don’t let them bother you.

3 Doug McIsaac June 30, 2009 at 7:10 am

It’s actually real simple. He complains because he’s an asshole.

He lives a miserable life, hasn’t been laid in decades, probably lives in his parents basement, hasn’t figured out how to make money online because he half ass tries everything that comes out and the only joy he has complaining.

One of the great things about social media tools like Twitter is that you don’t have to listen to assholes. you can simply block them it take 2 seconds and quickly removes the idiots from your life.

On a side note, I’m a daddy to a daughter and have yet to get my toes painted, but have sat through a few tea parties wearing tiaras. What that idiot Incredibill doesn’t know is that we couldn’t do things like that if we had an issue with our sexuality.

I figure your request for an explanation is rhetorical because I consider you an intelligent individual but I’ll offer my own 2 cents worth.

Here in Australia we call it the tall poppy syndrome. He’s clearly a wannabe and has some serious jealousy issues. Most likely he wants to be as successful, and have the level of fame that you have but just doesn’t have any constructive way to get it. He makes himself feel better about it by insulting you. Perhaps he bought one of your products in the past but wasn’t able to open the wrapping and is still pissed off about it. :P

I’d also say that he’d likely be one of the screamin queens. He seems to have an in depth knowledge of their rationale.

I wouldn’t have used such choice words, but I can’t say I’m surprised by his response or the fact that he tweeted it.

Trying to be objective, I think most heterosexual males would find having their toenails painted quite embarrassing. So your tweet looks like an attempt for shock value attention and… that is what brings the commentors out.

Did you really expect this tweet to come and go without a wide range of comments/tweetbacks?

Probably trying to get attention: follow someone high profile, cause a fuss, get noticed. He just got his own post. Seems to have worked!

I guess many of your followers do so because they are interested in online marketing etc rather than nail varnish?

Anyway, at least I know to stay clear of your feed if that’s what you “tweet” about ;) !

Kind of as a side topic, free speech has nothing to do with what someone says to you privately. It doesn’t give anyone the right to say whatever they want without consequence. Because “STFU” is also free speech.

Could also have been said in jest. You could imagine a friend saying the same thing but smiling and laughing and you’d know he was just pretending to be a bigot. Actually showing how stupid bigots sound, making fun of THEM, not you. All in the delivery – which is lost in text – unless he added a smiley.

If you start with the premise that 40% of the public are morons, another 40% are uninformed, and 20% fall within the bell curve of normalcy, then it helps explain a lot of the stuff you see on a daily basis.

A number of possible reasons:

1. Jealousy – He’s so jealous that he follows in order to take every chance to pathetically try to tear you down.

2. Enemy – He might be an online enemy. Keep your friends close but your enemies closer.

3. Asshole – no explanation needed.

4. Dumb – He’s trying to get you to post about him in order to get traffic to his lame blogspot blog. ha ha

5. Smart – The guy is actually a buddy of yours and you are trying to get him followers.

6. Humor – He was trying to be funny but failed miserably.

My vote is for #3.

I can pretty much guarantee you that Bill isn’t jealous of Shoe. He’s got his own very successful thing going on.

That’s just the way he is. He says stuff not much better to me sometimes, and I’m reasonably sure he considers me a friend. In fact, he’s probably said worse.

Since I know he doesn’t mean it, and I know how he is, it doesn’t bother me. In fact, I’m just as likely to say something as bad or worse back.

But if you didn’t know him, I could see why it might.

Aspkin knows NOTHING about EBAY.

Here is what I read on the internet: “asokin knows NOTHING about Ebay. He has not sold a single item on EBAY in over two years, and has no idea what is going on with Ebay for a long time now. If you look over, say, the last hundred posts from aspkin at his forum (if you want to research this), you won’t find a single mention of “wow I sold this on EBAY and that happened,” “I got a complaint from an EBAY buyer,” “Ebay is removing my listings because I did this or charged too much shipping,” “Ebay changed this policy this is how it is affecting me,” “I opened this account on EBAY this is what happened,” etc. etc. Whatever aspkin has to say on the subject of EBAY he lifts from the forum or states “in theory” what he thinks should be. I discount anything aspkin has to say on the subject of EBAY, and the biggest joke is his “Ebay Stealth” guide which someone else (named Mike, a Canadian) wrote for him and then aspkin edited based on what he thought might be true that he lifted from his forum.”

I think the interesting part here is that you say “People follow people they are interested in and want to know what they are doing” and yet you follow over 11,000 people.

This is just a personal opinion, but I think that you are lying if you say you really care about what all 11,000 people have to say. You may scan the tweets, search them, etc. but you don’t really care what each individual has to say.

Not saying what this guy said/tweeted is justified in any way. Just that you begin the post with a rather weak argument.

Reply

54 Richard M June 30, 2009 at 1:12 pm

I’ve gotta say I tend to agree here. Not everyone on twitter is following people just because they are interested in what that person has to say. I mean seriously out of the 10′s of thousand of people that you are following what percentage do you actually get the chance to read and interact with??

For most people its about networking, getting your name out there associated with someone else.

Not to pick on someone with mental issues, but unfortunately…I always feel like people who say random shit like this have either Aspergers or Tourettes Syndrome.

I have a cousin with Aspergers who says pointless crap like this…he can’t help it because this type of autism affects social behaviors that most people find as rude and/or annoying. The Internet gives them a pedestal to get attention.

Even if his intention was being an asshole, I just chalk it up to mental problems and move on. Everyone has a reason for the way they are.

I think the real problem is that people are allowed to have opinions. Although opinions are great and like expressing myself as much as the next person, people take things too personal. So what if you get a pedicure? So what if it looks gay (to some people)? Who forced you to click on the link? Who forced you to follow me (or you)?

On your end the problem is that you care. Do you really think that caring about being called names is going to change anything? Maybe you have a strong enough following that (whatever his name is) will get a big bashlash and “hated”. It is does not accomplish anything but personal satisfaction of revenge. People often are bothered by how calm I am about EVERYTHING, and I to be honest with you it makes me feel good when my lack of acknowledgment to certain things pisses them of.

I think this is a great example of leveraging off someone elses existing brand and profile.

It’s like the PPC campaigns where people use the old ‘scam line’. If someone can get publicity aka. a blog about them on shoemoney’s blog – or a viral video on a news website like we recently saw in Australia with the ‘chk chk boom’ girl, then they can potentially pick up some massive attention.

Cant say I agree with the method but hey I guess it works… controversy creates attention.

Hope your girl had a great birthday!

People expect a certain something from you, so they follow you. When they see they’re not getting what they expected, first they protest. And then they unfollow you.

What’s so hard to understand about that?

If you think people follow others in twitter because they are really interested in the other person’s update, I think (IMO), you’re way out. Yes, you might behave that way, but there are tons of tweeps out there that follow others in order to get a reciprocal follow, not because they are interested. Beats me why on earth they would want the numbers (of twitter followers) when it means nothing if there’s no quality to it.

Anyway, back to your question, it’s your blog, your tweet, and you maintain sole discretion whether to accept or ban anyone. No one would question it, at least not me.

And by the way, your ‘subscribe’ form, can’t you use some form of cookie so that it doesn’t always appear? Maybe a duration of once a week or a month?

Just my 2 cents.

Hi Jeremy

I agree with Andrew and the tall poppy syndrome he has mentioned. Further, i believe he belongs to that unwanted category of people that can’t help themselves but to insult others or crib about some random stuff.

True, i agree communities like twitter is to be friends and make more and at the same time you may not like everything about your friends but this is no way to approach them. Also, let’s not forget insults or criticism make us much stronger with time–:)

I love you the way you are–so original.stay likewise.

Actually they do look gay, LOL. Just kidding. I think that when you are following someone, in twitter or in real life, you always expect something from that person, and it´s difficult to accept that that person is different to us, and that he can think different, we are always expecting something from that person and when we get a different message of what we expected we feel frustrated and start yelling out!!! Personally I am matured enough to know that everybody is differente and free to do what he/she wants, if I don´t like anymore what he is saying or doing, I stop following that person, it happens when I read a writer, a politician, a guru, or whatever.

Just a few comments above have it right. The rest of you must not read at major forums like webmasterworld too often. You should do so. Bill has a username that is recognized by MANY in the industry, and he is respected by many as well.

Hey Shoe; you know I have made honest comments in your blog in the past. I can tell you right now with no regrets, and know it’s the darn truth; incredibill was joking with you. But really now Shoe; the toes are not what a straight man would do and you know it. You have had to expected people to pretty much laugh out loud. Who the heck puts painted toes on the internet? geez.

I’ve not posted a tweet nor a twitter and have no desire to do so as I do not give two shites what you or sally is doing during the day. I just don’t. But from what I see on twatter, as I can read twats even if not a member, it’s simply people stalking other people for different reasons. Many times it’s not because they give a damn about what “you” are doing at all, nor about what you have to say, but it can be about things like if you say anything stupid or not. Kind of like Google keeping track of SEO’s who do their best to exploit them. It’s not like the care or anything at all. They just want to find out how truly stupid you are.

That would be why Bill twatted at your toes. He really does not care at all and wanted to get a rise out of you….. Success, huh?
