John Chow Goes Legit – 301′s Google Bot to Johnchow.ca

by Jeremy Schoemaker on June 24, 2009 · 62 comments

John Chow is now 301′ing Google bot to a Google compliant johnchow.ca domain. Johnchow.com will still remain up and sell text links ads and paid posts but johnchow.ca will be fully 100% Google compliant John tells me.

The site is already ranking very well for some of John’s old terms.

Pretty smart compromise for both Google and John.

What kind of things has he changed on the .ca site compared to his .com site?

3 jamersan June 24, 2009 at 2:26 pm

sellout :)

He should have done this a long time ago. No, he doesn’t need google, but it is a nice bonus.

looks like the same content just missing some links…wonder how he won’t get bit by the duplicate content thing…

and that sucks that you have to crowd out each post with that stupid disclaimer

Theres an interesting post on SEOMoz.org that says that geotargeting with the same content wont get you a duplicate content penalty ( http://www.seomoz.org/blog/new-info-from-google-and-yahoo-tilts-the-geotargeting-balance )

cue all the retards to say OMG JOHN CHOW U R SO EVIL LOLLL

Yeah and sounds like he is cheating his text link advertisers too. If that is the case why not use nofollow instead of making them believe the links are there. Plus he 301s to a geo targeted domain. And if that new domain was not indexed before: SANDBOX!!!!!

Compromise? It’s clear that John Chow had his ass handed to him by Google and he finally caved in. Lol.

Love the disclaimer. I thought this was going to be like the Disa 301 post at first read. You know like Chastity Bono 301 redirecting to Chaz.

I noticed John’s .ca domain in the Google search results this week. Very smart idea.

Not that he really needs Google anyway with all his traffic, but it never hurts.

John Chow re-follows me on Twitter once a week. I can only assume he’s trying to get me to follow him. What a complete NOOB!

It’s always fun to see the power Google has over people who abuse the system.

Somehow I don’t think Google will like this for long. Especially while he’s still openly flaunting their guidelines on his .com site and only redirects the Gbot.

I would think this would be considered cloaking which Google frowns upon.

Hey Ben – yes it will be quite interesting to see how this plays out. I’ll be watching pretty closely. If his .com is out of the index (or is it just hidden) will it be a duplicate? maybe not – maybe he expressly asked that the .com be completely removed so that he can start over. Perhaps he spoke with them in advance to find a best solution??

Hmmm, he still has miles to go in the PageRank stakes though, as John Chow .ca only shows a PR2. It will come though.

Honestly speaking if this is for google only than its clearly mentioned that John wants to take one step forward towards google.

This can be good and bad as well.

The Superman shirt one would be best if the image was of your babysitter/nanny in a shoemoney shirt. That would rock and everyone would love to carry her around in their wallet.

This just goes to show how much BS Chow spouts to build up his readership. It also highlights the ignorance of his audience.

For a long time Chow told everyone he didn’t care about Google. He told everyone they should be the same. Everyone said, “Wow, John, great post.”

Now he’s changed his tune and everyone will pat him on the back again.

I watched John’s video about his business model and his back end revenue. I’m just getting a list going on my site – the timing of his video and the information within was a real encouragement. I’m sure I remember you speaking about email lists as well. Getting excited about building my list. John seems to me like a pretty likeable guy??

When we are all slave to the dollar, we will do what it takes to get paid. Sometimes we have to bend over to get paid. Some call these skills to pay the bills? I call it bending over and Google doesn’t like dirty butts. So, I think Mr. Chow may have just ate a turd sandwich. He does get a lot of trafffic without eating turds…..

That is an extremely smart move by John. Though I personally have always felt that John’s blog is a bit too much stacked with ads and affiliate products and you loose the reading interest in it, it is commendable at the amount that he is able to generate from his blog alone.
Good move John and all the best.
