Got notice wordpress 2.8 is released. These guys are doing really good with there release schedule.

I immediately upgraded via SVN and it broke the blog for a few minutes… I had to make a temp directory, grab 2.8 via svn, zip and unzip over my old and all was well.

My SVN install complained that the repository had switched urls dunno but its fixed.

There is over 150 bug fixes but this video covers most of the new features:

I’ll wait a couple of days before upgrading…

I will wait longer than that! I have made the mistake of jumping in too early and crashing my site.

I have the same problem with update via svn.
Can’t believe they broke that functionality.

problem with copy over is that you don’t keep the changes on files you made.
So atm i don’t dare to copy over since i lost track what i changed…

what files would you overwrite that svn would not have already ??

You should always wait for atleast 3 to 5 days in order to see the feedback about the new product before you actually implement it. This practice is always useful when the product has TON of bugs and in hurry you try and implement the same.

I’m also in the wait a little bit before upgrading camp. I’ve read about a few minor bugs with this version, but with my luck, I’d find the big, bad bug that breaks everything.

Theme viewer’s a bad idea.

A lot of webmasters will lose traffic to the themes they create to get traffic = they won’t bother = they’re not talking about WP as much.

I’m still on 2.7. Didn’t upgrade to 2.7.1 because I always manage to break my upgrade somehow. I’m sure it’s me, my IT guy always fixes it fast, but it sure helps make me feel foolish.

I’m excited about this release. I’m especially happy with the customizable header image being available on any theme. This lets me choose virtually any theme for my blog if I wish to redesign, rather than look at the limited pool built for custom headers.

Good timing, I was just going to install Wordpress. At least I don’t have to upgrade my install of the first day now.

So what do you like about 2.8 of wordpress ?

Reply

24 R Kumar June 14, 2009 at 11:04 am

I upgraded the very day it as launched. I am impressed with the interface once again. The best part is the widgets interface. It gives you a unique drag and drop option, which is pretty cool.
But there is a slight glitch in the system this time round. After upgrading I found that all my permalinks went back to the normal permalink structure that Wordpress comes with, which was pretty annoying.

Yeah and you forget to implement everything in your old way.

By the way – What is your suggestion if someone is going to upgrade 2.8. In what way he/she should do this and what precaution he/she should take before upgrading.

Wordpress is always impressive. It is ahead of time. The new release is exciting and promises to have fixed many bugs. I love wordpress because it gives me a simple solution to create my websites and blogs. The first thing I did was to upgrade and it is working just fine.

A few minutes after the 2.8 upgrade link (from 2.7.1) appeared in the Dashboard, I tried the Dashboard upgrade on a test Blog and it trashed the site. Went off line inspite of the screen confirmation. Grabed the .zip, nuked the plugins and themes folder and using 3D-FTP on a fast cable line I overwrote all the files. Upload was about 3 minutes and bingo, I’m cool a few seconds later. My upload was 684 files, 74 folders, amd 8.3 MB although some files were not overwritten. Could have used shell but I’m lazy. :)

Will wait for few days. Lets see what other people says about this. If this crashed than what step we can should take.

So for now 2.7 is good for us.

Well thanks for the info shoe. But I guess all wordpress users might know this because it will be displayed as a notice when we log into the control panel. i am yet to test it out so cannot really comment on the development claims of it being faster and better database management. last time I tried to upgrade one of my site from the version before that , my blog crashed. So all you people before making an upgrade do take care to back up. i am waiting for some more updates to come before switching to 2.8

Hey shoemoney – first time comment, but an avid reader.

I am passionate about only a few things and don’t get caught up in too much IM hype.
Wordpress is one of these passions.

I use it for EVERY web site i launch off, it doesn’t matter if I am setting up a site that needs to deliver digital good instantly or a membership site or a domain portfolio sales site . . . . I do it all with Wordpress.

Wordpress is much more than a blogging platform but a solid core as a excellent CMS.
I upgraded one of my sites to 2.8 to check it out and I am glad I didn’t upgrade them all.
My biggest fuss right now is the display the plugins page . . . you actually have to click more to get to where you’re going (they really need to go back to 2.7 as a time saver).

Thanks for the great info!

I upgraded it the day it was launched. I am a huge fan of Wordpress and am always on the lookout for their developments. But there were a few glitches on upgradation. The permalink structure went back to what it normally is when you install Wordpress and that was annoying. Then there was a bit of problem in upgrading plugins as well.

Love to new features, except for the editor. It is HORRID. It is extremely slow, won’t let me paste properly, and constantly zooms back up to line 1 when I am trying to edit something. I am positive this can’t be right, but so far have not found anything about this goofiness. It completely slows down my whole machine.

I custom design blogs.. I really need a working editor…lol… Is anyone else experiencing this?

The designer is still holding off on his WP 2.8 upgrade for another few days though, says there are STILL major bugs to be fixed…

Have upgraded a few of my sites. Main issue was not seeing the editor appear if using Firefox. For a fast wordpress editor application, I find using the Windows Live Writer desktop application is superb.
