Get Your Custom Facebook URL Tomorrow

by Jeremy Schoemaker on June 11, 2009 · 69 comments

Facebook has announced that tomorrow night tomorrow at midnight they will open up the vanity url’s.

If it looks anything like facebook ads lately that means the race will be on for facebook.com/acaiberry and facebook.com/iqtest

But seriously this is a opportunity you will not want to miss out on.

A couple months ago facebook offered me facebook.com/shoemoney for my fan page and its been awesome! I love being able to tell people just to goto facebook.com/shoemoney … so simple.

Don’t let your business/moniker get taken!

Also for those who have big plans to sell a vanity url Facebook will not allow changing or transferring of urls:

Think carefully about the username you choose. Once it’s been selected, you won’t be able to change or transfer it. If you signed up for a Facebook Page after May 31 or a user profile after today at 3 p.m. EDT, you may not be able to sign up for a username immediately because of steps we’ve taken to prevent abuse or “squatting” on names.

Of course that doesn’t mean you cant register a new account, squat, then sell the account? Maybe it does, but I expect there will be some issues.

To preempt those kinds of problems Facebook is asking people to email them if they have a trademarked or protected name

So anyway Tomorrow night at midnight EST the madness starts.

Here is the URL you need to goto to register your Facebook vanity url

Good luck!!!

This will be great. It will be much easier to give the url out now. My name is way too common, I’m hoping I get my first choice.

is this just for personal branding as I thought facebook only allowed individuals to have a profile

When are they going to let you change your profile background. I actually HATE all of the ads that are on the side of facebook they are soo stupid and if someone clicks on them I do NOT pity them if their computer blows up.
Stop it Facebook, stop it.

I wonder if this changes searchability. And I wonder if more searchable URLs is a backdoor ripe for hacking.

But I dunno, it’s probably just cool.

Shoe, i think your readers would benefit from the following info:

Although it is a ‘mad rush’ for the clean usernames, it won’t be that simple.

In order to qualify for the name you want to ‘squat’ on there are several factors they have stated on their FAQ pages:

If you have a fan page and want to get a custom URL, you MUST have registered it before May 31st and you must also have over 1000 fans.

This will definitely weed out a lot of useless pages that have been created for the purpose of squatting.
ALSO no one mentioned this but Facebook has mentioned that the URL you choose can NOT be a ‘generic’ search term such as ‘used cars’, ‘flowers’, etc. I’m pretty sure it has to be similar to whatever you current ‘real name’ is listed as.

thoughts anyone? It appears that they have actually done an alright job of containing a potential mad rush for URLs by squatters, however I’m sure there are many out there who were aware of this and got over 1000 fans prior to may 31st… we’ll see Saturday!

Okay, that’s interesting about the generic terms. In addition to my work life, I have an “after hours” life as a writer but my fan page for that doesn’t meet the 5/31 deadline. Still, if I use my real name, I strongly suspect won’t have any squatters competing for it.

I see facebook is trying to compete with Myspace, even though I feel like facebook is a little more popular than myspace. this could actually be a good thing (besides the fact that people will become 10 times more narcasstic now) but it does help if you are looking to promote yourself online.

I think it is one of the worthy development that is happening. Facebook is the most important tool to meet and entertain. It is really great to have a personal url there. I am among the first to try and make the most of the opportunity.
Facebook is where it is because of its continuing innovative process. I think this is one factor that will top the list of priorities in the days to come.

After getting your email this morning regarding this issue, I did a little surfing and found an interesting take on this situation on US News and World report.(The have well over 2 million uniques reported this month plus they have print media) Here is a permalink to a comment I made on it and you can see the original article US News cited which I feel is very poorly researched.

It seems like you don’t need 1,000 fans.

Your account must be setup before June 9 as the only criteria.

Dude, in order for the 1000 fans limit (not FRIENDS) to be in effect, that would be when you are trying to get a username for one of the PAGES you have setup from the ‘Ads and Pages’ link in the bottom left corner. most people just have a regular account with zero pages, therefor you got yours likely for your regular facebook account, not a page you created, otherwise you would have been told – sorry you do not meet the criteria at this time.

The greatest benefit of Facebook is that it has many groups on the site that you can join. So if you are interested in Chicago Cubs you can research Chicago Cubs in the groups section and you will be able to find friends on there that like the Cubs. This is just one example, I know that you can join groups of your favorite football team, television show, or whatever you want for the most part! If you can’t find a group for your interest, you can simply create one!
