What Lies In The Shadow Of The Statue – LOST

Posted on: April 18th, 2009 by Jeremy Schoemaker

Lost is totally kicking ass this season. I still think season 2 is the best but as this one comes to a close in a few weeks it could overtake it for me.

So what do you think lies in the shadow of the statue? Think its a riddle? Or a metaphor? Or is it something physical ?

I remember when Michael Emerson first came on lost as Henry Gayle. I wrote about what a badass actor I thought he was back then. He frickin rocks.

Even if you have never watched LOST watch the last part of this video on Jimmy Fallon where he reads little boy blue. You will see why he is such a badass:

What lies? There are multiple meanings to the word lie… Lie down or maybe someone or something telling a lie such as Ben or Locke

Just finished watching Seasons 1 to 4 on DVD, two or three episodes per night, best way to watch it!

Michael Emerson? Superb! he really has grown in my estimation over the last couple of seasons.

If he can be this creep reading Little Boy Blue, imagine what he could do with Red Riding Hood?

Just thinking about it will keep me awake tonight.

The writers of the show seem to have been influenced by two books – The Invention of Morel by Adolfo Bioy Casares and The Third Policeman by Flann O’Brien. You may find clues within these two books. Checkout wiki for the condensed notes.

Whatever lies in the shadow of the statue, it can turn those Ajira Air survivors into total savages, is opposed to Widmore’s sending miles to the island, and is either really small, or symbolic, because we cant see anything special when we see the foot. It doesnt seem like the others are behind it, cuz a) ben or richie would have said something by now and b) the whole kidnapping miles thing was amateur hour from top to bottom (look past the smiling cult guys confidence and its really a botched job (fish taco!)) so, best guess? a pocket of energy, or monster, that lives in the statue capable of brainwashing people, dannys gonna use jughead to blow up the statue (what else could vaporize it like that?) leaving only a foot. but the power is still there, or it can travel in time and affect the Losers (my nickname for the Ajiera Air bunch)

I was lucky enough to meet Michael Emerson in a store in St. Augustine, Florida about 2 years ago. It was right before the finale of his first season on the show- back when we still thought his name was Henry Gale. I am normally a reasonable person, but immediately went into crazy fan mode upon randomly meeting one of the BEST actors of my all-time favorite show!
He was very polite, friendly, and gracious. I will always remember meeting him, it was one of the coolest things ever!

You must also not forget that while on the raft or sailboat ( sawyer Michael jin Walt or jin Sayid and sun, I truly can’t remember) saw the remnants of the foot of the statue on the coast. The statue looked exactly like the egyptian god charming the smoke monster in the temple. To me, it looks like the god Anubis if anyone knows their Egyptian lore. It’s possible that might be where Richard buried the “jughead” H Bomb and it could be a final solution of sorts in the “war” that was foretold as coming to john locke.

Lost has kind of done the impossible. They seemed to be losing track of any real plot then BOOM, JJ figured it all out and is pulling things together fantastically. Now just don’t blow it by making the last episode suck!

I’ve found that smarter people still watch lost while simpler people LOST interest.

I don’t think its as much a riddle as an actual question. I’m sure you remember the part where Locke and Sawyer and crew were bouncing around through time on the island, and during one of the warps they see this gigantic statue.

I would bet that there is litterally something around the statue that they are referring to.

This episode was well good :) I was wondering about this question put to Miles though… at first I thought it’s most likely just a metaphor or some stupid little riddle or knowledge check that you never hear about again and that never gets explained. But… since he says “the statue” instead of “a statue” I guess it could actually refer to something specific. I did notice a few episodes ago when they were jumping time there was one jump sent them way back, maybe a couple of thousand years, and they saw that huge egyptian, or similar, style statue on the coast. Could it be something to do with that maybe? or what other statues have we seen on the Island? Maybe the question is to check which Miles he is… after all if they know some of them have been jumping time they might have already met another future Miles. I dunno..

I like to think I have a fairly in-depth understanding of the Plot. You’d have to catch up, though, before we could discuss it further…As for where it’s going, and what Season 6 is going to be like…I take it one episode at a time. (I avoid spoilers like the plague!)

Aye…! Just had an Epiphany: what if the Island, and all its artifacts/ruins/etc have to do something–not with Ancient Egypt–but with ATLANTIS!?

      Hmmm…

        April 28, 2009 at 9:18 pm

It has something to do with Egypt (ancient). The exit leads to where? Desert, which desert? Somewhere in Egypt, why? Because. The Statue is Anubis, the Smoke monster is Seker. Anubis and Seker do not dwell in Atlantis but in Egypt, and hieroglyphs too.

        • Russell Albert
          April 28, 2009 at 10:41 pm

There are some schools of thought that believe Egyptians were the ancestors of Atlantians.

I’m not sure how Egypt or Atlantis tie into the story yet…The possibilities are almost endless.

          • wowo

      • Wayne John
        May 5, 2009 at 10:48 am

        Possibles for me:

        1) Atlantis
        2) Eden

Atlantis would make sense due to how advanced it supposedly was.

If it were Eden, on the other hand, there would be a great tie in to being ‘cast out of Eden, never to return’, and thusly populating the cradle of civilization thereafter.

I don’t recall seeing any snakes on the Island, but smokey could probably double for one…

I’m torn though. I would think Atlantis would have more egyptian ties than would Eden.

One thing is certain though, I’m hooked.

What lies in the shadow of the statue? JUGHEAD! After all, where did it go, and how come we got a whole episode named after it, which featured young Charles, and then it was never discussed again? Because of the impact the surprise when its show again in the finale, I’m guessing.

    • Russell Albert
      April 19, 2009 at 11:52 am

You could be onto something. I’m fairly certain, though, that Jughead was buried right where it was…So, unless a statue was erected in the same location (I don’t recall any out-in-the-open-statues)…

      Good theory/possibility, though.

Jeremy, Have you seen “The Practice”? Emerson won an Emmy for his portrayal of the alleged serial killer William Hinks in 2001 – if you haven’t seen it the season with him in it really took the show up a level. The name “Hinks” can still send a shiver down my spine!

I gave up on Lost after S3, but I’ll give it another go.

  36. C.lick.io
    April 18, 2009 at 7:50 pm

I agree with Dan Benjamin of Hivelogic.com fame. His theory is that LOST is turning towards more Egyptian mythology. The statue thing could fit in with that, and they have been showing more and more hieroglyphics in various scenes.

    • alarmist
      May 1, 2009 at 4:24 pm

it may not be about Egyptians in particular, remember the swan symbols were hieroglyphs, not hieroglyphics. the diff is that the former was used thousands of years later and all over Africa, so any ancient culture is the possible fathers of the island

Agreed: Season 3 was a spectacular season! (With the exception of Nikki and Paulo. They sucked @$$.)

It’s good to see, too, that the LOST writers did not LOSE THEIR FRIGGIN’ MINDS like the Heroes’ writers. What IS going on with Season 3, seriously?

To follow up on my earlier statement: has anyone read American Gods (Neil Gaiman)? If so, do you remember there being the “In the Shadow of the Statue” line somewhere in the text? I’ll have to backtrack and hopefully find it…

Lost is fantastic. Especially this season. I kind of had a problem, at first, with the whole time travel thing, but now I have really gotten in to it.

Ahh man Fringe isn’t even in the same league as Lost and I doubt it ever will be. Heck I doubt it will ever be as good as X-files.

Season 5 so far has been one of the best seasons they’ve had. Not only are they starting to wrap up much of the story they are doing it with more compelling story lines.

I think there might be something physical buried beneath the statue, but it was clearly a code. Probably to see if you are “in the circle of trust”

LOST is by far the greatest series ever. I actually just finished watching the newest episode last night on my computer.
