Hope And Change

by Jeremy Schoemaker on March 15, 2009 · 159 comments

I voted for Obama and thought he was pretty sincere about his change message.

In this video alone there are 7 lies and we are only into the first couple months of his presidency:

1. Make Government Open and Transparent.
2. Make it “Impossible” for Congressmen to slip in Pork Barrel Projects.
3. Meetings where laws are written will be more open to the public (republicans shut out).
4. No more secrecy.
5. Public will have 5 days to look at a Bill.
6. You’ll know what’s in it (Republican Senators didnt know).
7. We will put every pork barrel project online.

Now his approval rating is lower then George W. Bush’s at the same time in his administration.

I still have hope…

BTW check out Glenn Becks 912 project. Pretty good stuff. We need to start small and clean the system.

it is the idea of class warfare that bugs me….are we now going to put a ceiling on possibility in this country? and why is it that the first question government always asks is how can we increase revenue? When are they going to lead with where can we cut expenses?

it’s people making over 250k that are employing so many of us who aren’t. Why take away incentive for them to succeed?

Your points 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 are wrong, or haven’t had the time to be proven yet. The Republican’s don’t know what is in the bill? Yeah… right. And bills will become for public, I’m optimistic about it. Why bash our president on your blog so early, he has barely started and inherited one of the worst US economies of its time. We need to gain confidence, not spread the bashing game.

#2 has most certainly been proven. There were over 9,000 earmarks (pork) in the just-passed 2009 budget. Hard to dispute admitted facts (Obama dismissed this as “old business”)

The rest can easily be demonstrated by the break neck speed at which the “stimulus” bill was passed. The 1,000+ page bill was completed just before midnight on Thursday and voted on Friday afternoon. No one read it before voting on it. That would be physically impossible. Obama then signed the bill in a big ceremony on Tuesday which means it did not meet the 5-days promise. Even Obama didn’t know what was in it.

This is the worst post-inauguration economy performance in 90 years which demonstrates that Obama is not inspiring confidence in markets. Perhaps this is due in part to his “doom and gloom” attitude. He may have inherited a bad situation, but he sure isn’t helping to improve it.

I think a big part of his ratings being low right now have to do with a lot of people thinking that all of the sudden everything would turn around for the better instantaneously over night….even though he kept saying it would take time.

I think that what you point out is very trivial. These little things don’t make a strong country.

I do believe that whoever is in the office is much better than Bush anyway.

One thing that Obama is doing is putting an end to this war in Irak and he has taken stong measures to start the process. He is also starting to talk to nations that were completely ignored by the Bush administration or considered as terrorists. This is I believe the best way to improve the image of the US overseas. I think this is a key component is restructuring the US economy and foreign exchanges.

Sidenote: could you make the comment form a little wider? It’s so small that it feels like I’m typing an SMS on my cellphone ;)

17 Matt March 15, 2009 at 8:17 pm

The U.S. withdrawal from Iraq has little to nothing to do with Obama. These were timelines set up by the military, the previous administration, and Iraq’s government before BO took office. He is simply sticking to the timeline, which is good, but he wasn’t the catalyst to make it happen. I wonder how you feel about BO sending tens of thousands of new troops to Afghanistan.

Personally, I couldn’t give a rat’s a@# if Iran or Syria or any of the countries labeled as terrorists like us. I don’t remember a lot of people saying, “gee, what can we do to help close the concentration camps but still have Hitler and the Third Reich like us?” National security should always trump our overseas image. Remember, radicals hate you and want you dead simply because you were born in America. Being really, really nice to them won’t change that.

But can’t we all just get along? No.

Couldn’t say it better, “Remember, radicals hate you and want you dead simply because you were born in America. Being really, really nice to them won’t change that.”

Sure it would be nice if all it took was conversation and negotiation to make the whole world smile back at us. Hussein had someone on his staff who’s job was to rape women. If we could have only sat down & talked & appealed to his softer, more reasonable side. Keep dreaming people.

I agree with you about Obama. This guy can lie without a blink of an eye. Remember he was trained as a lawyer. They are infamous for not being the most moral of characters. Don’t get me wrong I am a very patriotic person an want him to succeed. The problem is that I think he is getting a pass on a lot of issues that could really affect the future of this country.

People should not be blinded and caught up in all of the hype about hope and change. I would take having the truth over false promises any day of the week. Also his strategy is to blame Bush for everything. Good leaders never do this. They take responsibility for the problems at hand and go to work to fix them. It really is a sign of weakness that he’s is doing this all the time in the media.

A lot of people say Bush was radical. I say at least he was radical for us and not the enemy. Obama thinks there is something wrong with our country and we should feel guilty about being Americans. This is the best country in the world and I do not think it needs to be fundamentally changed. We do not need bigger government we need smarter government.

Again, I hope he succeeds.for the benefit of the country. Just don’t let us be deceived into one mans agenda. Any change should be a collective effort decided by the people who really are the ones at the heart of this country and future. All sides need to be listened to very carefully for a wide spectrum of solutions to solve the nations problems. If it’s only one sided we will fall short and could suffer greatly from this type of mentality.

This is not a liberal or conservative fight. This is a battle to make the future a better place for the following generations to come after us.

Its just complete bullshit!!! Do you know what China is doing right now? Buying up all the resources in Africa pumping billions and billions of dollars into their education system and building out infrastructure.. What is America doing? Bickering over bullshit and blaming each other.. Hopefully, things will get bad enough and both sides will wake up, and put what’s best for the country first and try to maintain our status as a world leader..

I voted for Obama and the only reason that convinced me to vote for him was McCain’s age. I personally know several politicians and from what I’ve seen politics isn’t about ideas and hope. It’s about experience and reality. Obama may be a well educated man with many great ideas but I still believe that it was the hype about having a black president that sent him to the white house. I just hope he doesn’t screw up too much until Hilary becomes our next president.

I will say that it is discouraging to see him go against some of the very things he promised prior to his election. He is facing an incredibly difficult economic situation and I think its somewhat unfair to consider his approval ratings at least until after his first year or two.

Shoe, I, too, am still hopeful of what he brings to the table. He was the better of the two candidates. Politics are always tricky. One thing is for sure tho, as has already been said in the comments, don’t pay much attention to Fox News lol.

This is the reason I don’t like talking politics, particularly on blogs. You hide behind a screen with Obama sucks as your username. It’s clear there’s no point in arguing with you because you’ve already made up your mind. If you want to bash the president with insults instead of substance, go on over to Flopping Aces.

I’m interested in knowing exactly what it is you think the president should do in light of the economic situation? Do we judge the sports coach that’s inherited a team in shambles after 5 games?

Exactly how is he acting like a little boy? That sounds like insults instead of documenting specific reasons as to why he sucks.

Shoe came with some legitimate points in his post, some of which can be disputed, but he at least listed what he expects. To me, it sounds “Obama sucks” is just bitter all across the board.

People that believed obama was going to be different from any other politician (or any liberal for that matter) are kidding themselves. Get past all that talk of change, and you have a liberal. And liberals tax, spend, and redistribute wealth. They believe the gov’t is more capable of doing about everything better than the private sector. And they treat people that make over a certain amount like rich snobs.

I could really care less about obama, he just ran a good campaign. I was just surprised that so many nimrods actually voted for this guy and thought things actually WOULD change. You don’t become president by not being political.

And if you think obama isn’t political, check out the latest smear campaign against rush limbaugh. The white house has strategy sessions on how to associate limbaugh (an unliable person to the general population) with the republican party.

Spend a little more time on the .gov TLD and you will realize this. He’s been reducing secrecy and improved transparency. Take a look at some of the XOs he’s signed and reversed from GW Bush. Shoe, you are arguing from a position of ignorance. The points laid out are completely spurious. Of course GW Bush had a higher approval rating 2 months into his term. He inherited the greatest economic expansion in U.S history. Obama has arguably inherited the greatest economic collapse. Do you know what pork is? I don’t think you do. If you are thinking that an earmark is equivalent to pork, then you are mistaken. Other than that, he’s only been in office about 50 days and has been dealing with the worst economic mess in decades and a failing war. If he hasn’t made govt fully open and transparent in 50 days I would surely say that he has made it MORE open and transparent. These things take time. Sure Bush had a high approval rating in the first 50 days of his presidency…the stock market was booming, we weren’t at war and he hadn’t had a chance to F*$@ everything up yet. Jeez…

I liked a lot of things Obama said during the campaign. But I knew that as president, he doesn’t have the sole power to make all things he wanted to do happen. It wasn’t until he got into office or near office that he started backtracking and saying that a lot of “change” that needs to happen may or may not happen during his term, etc.

The problem is that–in my opinion–no president has had the level of expectations put on them as Obama has. I personally think he’s been set up to fail because of the messiah-like pedestal that people put him on. He’s one man, yes, that can make a lot of difference, but he’s the president. He has two other houses of government that have their input: that’s checks and balances.

All our elected leaders promise the world. We have to be wise enough to listen and know that it’s mostly rhetoric.

He just got into office. Let’s give the guy some time to sort out the mess.

By the way, I did not vote for him, but he is my president.

Comparing Obama’s approval rating with Bush’s at the same time in their administrations is ridiculous. In 2001, Bush was coming off of Clinton & a long period of prosperity. (If not for the Lewinsky thing, Bush wouldn’t have even been president.) Bush hadn’t had a chance to screw things up too much yet. Obama is cleaning up the mess after 8 years of Bush, no way can he be judged on the same standard — no matter what you do when there’s this big of a mess, many people are going to scream bloody murder.

We’ll see where the approval ratings are 3 years in, then you can match him up with Bush and have a comparison worth discussing.

Obama claims stimulus Pork-Free, passes it to congress, and signs the resulting bill which contains 8,816 pet project earmarks worth $7.6 billion dollars. Top among them was Vice President Joe Biden .

The president’s new promises on earmark reform would carry greater weight if they had been accompanied by a veto keeping his earlier promises on earmark reform. Why would congress stop placing ear marks, if we sign them?

As a believer in freedom, free markets and capitalism, I believe President Obama is making HUGE mistakes. Aside from the broken promises that I wasn’t naive enough to believe in the first place, we ABSOLUTELY can’t waste trillions of dollars without having MAJOR inflationary problems in the not-so-distant future.

We are no longer a creditor nation and don’t have the luxury of spending $ we don’t have. The Asian countries aren’t going to buy treasuries forever. Our only solution has been/will be to print money. Inflation is a tax that we all pay and it will be most painful for the very people that voted for Obama in the first place.

Why do you think gold and silver prices have been on the rise since last November after the election. The people that understand economics see what is coming. How is the gov’t going to pay it’s 39 trillion dollars in obligations? It’s real easy-with worthless, deflated pieces of paper that we call dollars.

The trouble is, we spent a good trillion prior to electing Obama on companies like AIG, thus starting this whole mess. Now we’re at the point that its where do we stop? The nation would be in an uproar if Washington did nothing after giving companies like AIG billions upon billions only to have the money used for bonuses and such for executives.

Those of you who want to bash Obama need to reevaluate your view based on fact and not emotion. Those of you who bash Bush need to reevaluate your view based on fact and not fiction.
I am always surprised at the number of people who take positions without any factual research and I think the problem stems from where to get the truth. You won’t find it coming out of Obama’s mouth and you won’t find it coming out of Rush Limbaugh’s mouth. Somewhere in middle is where the truth resides. Look around and don’t take one source as fact. Check it out from a few places before you spew.

Well, it looks like Obama coming out and speaking against AIG sent the stock market down again today. I would rather let them get bonuses and have the stock market up. This is obviously a war between the White House and Wall Street. If the White House wins I predict these hard times will become that much harder. Don’t get me wrong I am enraged that I have to pay for AIG’s mistakes with tax dollars. What I am even more mad about is paying for a stimulus package that is astronomically unnecessary on top of it. If AIG is going to be grilled then Obama needs to be held just as accountable. He’s making a bad situation even worse. Thats right, I forgot he needs the market to go down again so he can pass another stimulus to pay back the people that put him into office. Golly Gee

Out of curiosity, what factual evidence are you using to base your prediction on that hard times will become harder?

That to me sounds more like demagoguery than anything.

Obama does need to be grilled… anyone spending that much money needs to be grilled. I just don’t understand your prediction, and I don’t understand why we let Bush pass without being grilled?

I don’t understand how you can be more mad at paying tax dollars on public works projects than you are at paying for a greedy executive’s bonus after AIG’s executives earning the company a whopping 98% loss. What executive deserves any bonus after destroying their company like that?

Well, personally, I think the expectations were too high. Some Democrats may regard him as their Reagen, and Republicans think of him as a false messiah of some sort, spreading socialism. I think both are wrong. He took the mantel of presidency and will fail or win depending on, i think, chance. There are so many ifs and regarding him as human is a start. Also, rely on a pundit like Glenn Beck who is immensely wealthy and speaking only for the wealthy conservatives and not for the gainfully unemployed . This begs the question what is he up to? Making money for him self at this new 912 site? On this site you have to believe totally in God and in Ayn Rand? Ayn Rand who never cared a ounce for a working person but for the money made off of these workers by the rich. I think some need a time out in this nation. Look as a whole at us all and think of the rich middle class, working poor, etc and come together instead of splitting us apart.

if you read the site… Beck asks only if you believe in 7 of the 9 principles. He has stated you don’t have to believe in God, its one of the 9.

if you read “The Forgotten Man” you will see where govt intervention caused the great depression. Roosevelt taxed 100% of income over $25,000. Why would anyone work or invest money if the Gov’t takes all or most of it? Why build a new factory or risk Money. You cannot make poor people rich by making rich people poor… has that ever worked?

If you want to read teh truth about Obama, his roots, who he is really associated with and the people behind him please take 10 minutes to read this article. I have very serious doubts about where Obama is going to take the world. I think it’s good to see the end of US aggression but Obama’s presidency is going to be about Global financial reform using the Crunch to push it through. I think we’ll see considerable progress towards a centralised global banking system and that’s bad news for everyone’s freedom.

Obama is going to do a lot of things that will ruffle some feathers but I think once a couple years go by and results start to show Obama will definitely look better. Of course, from one to two years from now, you won’t really be able to judge based on comparing ratings because Bush had the highest rating in history post 9/11…

Anyone who has any idea of what’s actually happening with the economic downturn understands that it’s not going to “turn around” in a couple of months (no matter what ANYONE does or what anyone would have done). This means the fickle, faddish, short-attention span, American Idol and Fox News watching, Burger King swallowing, insanely ignorant mob in this country will start their maniacal chattering and tongue lashing at one another which will inevitably lead them to screaming and thrashing wildly through the streets howling in deep and garbled, intellectually incurious unison that, “Obama isn’t doing enough!!!” and when they do so they’ll fall right into the open, hairy, burning, sulfur smelling arms of the Republican Party. At that point anyone who isn’t a delusional super-rich fascist or a delusional cross-burning racist should consider packing up and moving to another country.

Right now, Obama is on a tour to California and Jay Leno to prepare us for another Stimulus Package. He successfully was able to attack AIG with Congress to keep the stock market down with the politics of distraction. The democrats need to have the fear in the public and to say we need to put money in all of these social programs to boost the economy. When the stock market goes up people feel less fear and are more likely to not want anymore of their tax dollars going to the government. Please people stand up and stop the government from taking anymore of are money. Stop attacking Wall Street and let them recover . We are comparing millions to billions. Let’s worry about the billions. It is so obvious what is going on and how the public is being manipulated.

Obama is not The Messiah, just as Bush wa not the devil.

Unfortunately, our country (and our world) is becoming polarized because we like people who are confident and seem to have answers. Sadly, however, they are also professional entertainers…and they make their bones by demonizing the other side.

Most people want the same basic things out of life. Where we disagree is on how to get there. But ALL people deserve our respect, and most politicians (if not all) deserve our suspicion.

I didn’t vote for Obama, because he had no track record. But now that he’s in office, I want him to be successful. There’s no question that he’s overreaching…but he’s also been bold in taking action. Bush’s biggest mistake was not that he didn’t know where he wanted to go…but he forgot to bring the country along with him. Obama has been making the same mistake. He needs to slow down and walk us all thru the steps he’s trying to take. If he continues to play it fast and loose…he runs the risk of pissing everyone off, and losing the good will of the country. That would be a huge mistake.

Jeremy,

This is a bit frustrating to read. If this post was published a year from now, I might give you more credit.

A couple months into his presidency, and you want decades of policy to change overnight?

I don’t consider myself a Republican, nor a Democrat. So, hopefully you won’t take this comment as biased.

I supported Obama because I thought he was a great candidate. Unfortunately, many of his votes came from people who were expecting miracles.

A few months ago at the airport, I overheard a guy telling his clients that the economy was going to start booming soon, now that Obama was president.

I just have to laugh. Perhaps we need to require a course in economics, and at least a brief understanding of the political system, before allowing people to vote?

Anyone expecting much before (at the very least) 2010, will be very disappointed.

Reply

123 David April 1, 2009 at 2:09 pm

I don’t think he’s asking for changes overnight. Some of those things can happen immediately and Obama broke promise almost immediately.

Such as the public would be able to see bills for 5 days. That would also contribute to the transparency. There’s two down, easy to keep that promise. It doesn’t take time for those.

Granted, some of the other stuff will take some time, but to say don’t expect anything until 2010 is pretty low expectations when looking at the list he compiled.

Everyone voted for BO because he promised change. Change doesn’t always mean something better will happen. As a Lion’s fan we were happy when Matt Millen took over because he was going to ‘change’ one of the worst teams in the NFL. He did – now they’re the worst team in the history of the NFL. Hopefully BO won’t screw things up too bad.

We needed, and still do, a person like Ron Paul for a president. Someone who isn’t making every decision based on greed and money and what’s in it for themselves but someone who bases decisions on the good of the American people. Pretty much every politician is only in it for themselves and not their constituents.

I know that is an incendiary statement, but it is nonetheless a fact.

You cannot print money and tax your way to prosperity. Big government is not and never has been the answer.

I have seen him sacrifice his life to make sure YOU had all the rights intened by the constitution. Soldiers serve because they keep our soil war free, blood free.

I once lived in South Korea. I lived with the knowledge that if N. Korea launched a missile it was 13 seconds from launch to impact. I had a gas mask sitting out on a table for 2 years. I lived with a bag packed and enough info in it to restart my life for two years. Hmmm, you don’t live that way do you?

HAVE YOU EVER EVEN READ THE CONSTITUTION?????? Have you ever visited The USS Arizona? Have you visited the National Cemetary? Have you visited the Viet Nam Memorial? Do you have even an enth of an idea who has lost their life to keep blood from running past your front door and making sure you could run down to Mickey D’s or make the choices in your life that you’ve made.

When is the last time you have done anything to serve your county in any capacity for no other reason than you just did?

People need to wake up that we each have a responsibility to make our nation better and yes there are plenty of things you can do to make our nation stronger. Start by doing your homework. Knowledge is power.

Before I start. I am not a Democrat or Republican. I am like the majority of the country, I am in the middle and can see positives/negatives on both sides.

It wasn’t until the day before the election that I decided to vote for McCain, mainly due to experience.

But when BO took office I was hoping he would be the best President ever. I am for the best interest of the country, not the personal agendas or party agendas.

Now that he’s in office, I am not a big fan of what he’s done or is trying to do. From his campaign I expected him to be more moderate, which is where most of America is.

That’s what the biggest problem is with politicians in general. They tell the people what they want to hear to get elected, then it’s about personal and party agendas, which many times is not in the best interest of the country.

Congress has me really fed up. Ever since the TARP, they have shown me that they are completely irresponsible and don’t care what the constituents think.

It’s time to remind them they work for us. We don’t have lobbyist, but we have votes. Individually, we can’t do much, but together we can move mountains.

I am starting a grassroots movement to vote all of congress out on their next election. They have proven they are irresponsible. They have shown they do not hold the people’s opinion in high regard as they passed the TARP although the majority of America didn’t want it. Then, they were irresponsible enough to rush it through without a plan to make sure it was used for it’s intended purpose, it was just “here take our $700 billion…hopefully you will do some good”.

Let’s put new blood in Congress and give them a chance to show they deserve it. Because these people have already shown they don’t.

I am working on the website now and should be up soon.

Video’s like this are stupid. With a campaign that lasted almost 2 years, finding 7 campaign promises that have not been fulfilled within the first 100 days is easy.

Take a moment and consider the fucked up state the economy is in and imagine how much time is taken up trying to fix it. Whether you agree with the methods or solutions being inacted, I think most people would agree it has to be extremely time consuming to do. So the fact that some promises have yet to be fulfilled does not seem surprising to me.

That being said, if down the road these promises are not fulfilled eventually, I would agree that that is messed up.

But I am optimistic and will be taking a wait and see approach before I jump on the BO bashing bandwagon.

The inauguration was only January 20th. People have unrealistic expectations of change. NOTHING is ever changed overnight. So, I am willing to give it a bit more time. Let’s talk again a year from now…

I think nobody is perfect in this world.

It’s not about perfection. It’s about politicians being politicians. They say anything to get elected, then follow their personal or party agendas. Unfortunately, that’s not always what’s best for the country.

Yes, many of those things will take time to implement. But #5 (public will have 5 days to look at at legislation) is something that can be implemented immediately. He did it once, but it has not happened since. That would also help to work toward the transparency.

So those that say give it a year…what about that? If he can do it once already, then he can always do it. But he’s not.

I didn’t vote for Obama because I don’t live in the USA. But I think he is the best hope for America, and the world, in these dangerous times.

Don’t judge him too early: he inherited a hell of a mess from the previous administration which was so bad that Americans visiting UK used to tell people they were Canadians, they were so embarrased!

My own government stumbles from one crisis (of their own making) to another and we despair. We look to Obama to lead the world and we cannot afford to give up hope.

Please help Obama succeed!

You look to Obama to lead the world. He needs to start at home first. Elect your own Obama if you love him so much…please. Every president inherits the last man’s mess. That’s an excuse. Pres Clinton had a chance to get Bin Laden when he was in office. Since he passed on a great chance to get him and maybe stop 9/11 Pres Bush had to deal with the consequence of that decision on his watch. See how it works. I have been to Europe and never ever claimed to be a Canadian. Before you write something think about what your saying. I think what you wrote was the most ridiculous point of view I’ve seen on here so far.

Yes We Can. These 3 words have forever changed the face of America. These 3 words have revived the spirits of a nation, and become a new symbol of hope for America. A country that had been almost bought to it’s knees by fear has now been revived and lifted up in hope and courge by these three small but powerful words-Yes We Can.

Hope and change will need to come from the backyards of the people who want change in their homes and workplaces.

Truly, it begins with the power of one.

Martin Luther King did not wait for the government to act-HE did. And his countrymen and women acted with him. The government could not ignore the votes of such people, nor of the people they influenced. THAT was when the government acted.

Ghandi brought the British Empire to its knees, because HE acted. Others began to act as he did, and hope and change became real. THAT was when the government acted.

Those people believe in what they are doing.
They are active. They are working toward the change they seek. If you agree, join them.
If not, then follow their method.
If it’s going to happen, I have to be the one to begin it, and work with others like myself.

You can, too.

Then, and only then, can we exercise the power of the many.

When Barack Obama talks about change, he also wants you to change. He doesn’t want to be the only catalyst, he’s expecting you to play your part too.

All politicians are a joke and BO is the king joker (you’ve probably seen him dressed as the joker by now). Doesn’t matter whether they’re democrat or republican they’re all in it for themselves. It’s all about greed.

I think people are finally starting to wake up and realize that this guy is nothing more than a socialist that lied thru his teeth (like all politicians do) to get elected. I just can’t believe how many people drank the kool aid.

I think we still need more time to see what real effect he has on the country, he was given a pretty bad hand when he came into power

Amazing! This blog looks just like my old one! It’s on a entirely different topic but it has pretty much the same page layout and design. Excellent choice of colors!
