I’m A MuffinTop

by Jeremy Schoemaker on January 7, 2009 · 148 comments

Last night was the first night I have gone to the gym in about 6 months!   My diet has really gone downhill an I am up to 230 lbs.  And I have heard it from you guys in the comments of my free shirt friday posts.

So I am back on a good diet, lifting 3 days a week, and going to try to do cardio 2x a week.

I will also post my weight in free shirt friday posts.  Right now it is at 230.   My target weight is 195.

Good job getting to the gym! Just remember not to push too hard at first. Remember that ANYTHING is better than nothing, and eventually you will be able to push yourself safely.

That sucks, I deal with the same things. Kinda funny because I am almost in your shoes exactly, weight 237 and want to get back down to 205 – 195. It’s a constant battle to keep weight under control, especially when you are so busy with life.

Best of luck to you.

I was thinking the same thing about myself. I’ve been getting pudgy. I haven’t been to a gym since last May. I just started doing cardio on my rowing machine again last Monday.

Side note about comments: I like that you added the js to remove text, but it still doesn’t do it for the text box. It also puts ” (require) after the email and name. When you click on them, it erases them, so as a returning user, I have no choice but to completely re-enter my info. If you want some easy scripts to throw in to fix everything, just let me know. That’s my area of expertise :)

Jeremy: “going to try to do”?

You and I will die if we “try”.

Follow Yoda’s admonition: “Try not! Do or do not!”

I’ve written those words on an index card that I’ve been carrying with me for the past month.

Try? Ya, that’ll work. Always does: “I’m trying . . I tried . . . ”

$hit or get off the pot on this one OR give it up and choose Plan B.

I need my own Zen master to beat me over the head, too. You in? :)

Cutting out carbs from refined foods is key, the lower the GI (Glycemic Index) of your food intake the better. The food with the highest GI is, wait for it…….BEEEEEER!

White bread is another no-no, along with white rice and other ultra refined foods (not forgetting white sugar, the most widely abused drug in the world)

Pushing weights in conjunction with a low GI diet is definitely the best way to shed weight and tone muscles, giving you the fastest, best results…..naturally.

Schoemaker, I personally find that the gym requires a very powerful mental trick. Human beings are motivated in 1 of 2 ways: Away from pain or toward pleasure. I’ve found that most people are away from pain, which is why goals usually don’t work for a lot of people. Figure out which one you are…

Do you prefer to have a fire lit under your butt?
or
Do you prefer to chase after the carrot in front of you?

You can use this as self leverage to help your consistency of going the gym.

Let me know how it work out for you!!

Here’s an idea, I set up a cycle trainer in my garage, a mountain bike just clips into it and for 45 minutes every day I go in there straight from work and cycle and read or listen to the radio.

I was at 195 and am now 4 months later at 180. Other key stuff, no snacks after evening meal and drink only water after that time.

Better still I am getting through books like you wouldn’t believe. Truly 2 birds with one stone!

You can do it!

Hi Jeremy,

Yes the holiday food really added some ‘tonnage’ to my frame as well!

Too many snacks between massive lunches and dinners with family and friends.

Before BlogWorld Expo in September 2008 I weighed 202. Now I weigh 213!

I was riding the exercycle 15 miles per day on Mon~Fri. with weekends off to recover.

Then I pulled a thread of my hamstring and quit riding for awhile. Now I’m motivated to get back to that schedule.

Hope we meet again at #ASW09 in Las Vegas this week.

And thanks for the free Shoemoney t-shirt, I wear it often!

I gained some pounds over the holidays as well! Went from 202 to 213 pounds! Was riding the exercycle 15 miles per day, Monday thru Friday, weekends off.

Pulled a thread of my hamstring, and am just healed enough to begin the schedule again.

Hope to meet you again at Affiliate Summit West 2009 in Las Vegas this weekend.

I am with ya Shoe. I am about to do a gastric bypass, as I have a trainer now I work with. I know how hard it is to lose the weight man. But I know you did it once, you can do it again. Mental game, that’s all it is. I learned that way late, but am applying ti now.

I wish I have all the discipline and determination to muster so I can stay fit and trim all throughout the year too! Sigh! :(

I am just a couch potato like everyone else. Why is it too darn hard to diet and exercise? :p

Muffin Tops are caused by wearing too tight of pants. So girls just take them off…

Jeremy,

Good stuff – taking the first step is the hardest part. Kudos to you for exercising but keep in mind that for fat loss purposes diet is the primary modifier (in other words, you can’t outrun a crappy diet).

Best of luck.

I stand for moderations in food and physical training not to ride an exercycle 15 miles per a day.

OK I love this post. I remember that one episode of Singfield that was about muffin tops. This video is so funny!

Hey Jeremy,

Like you I too need to get back into the gym. I have equipment in my house but for some reason find myself unable to use it…try as I might I can’t motivate myself.

So what does that mean? Gym membership, another $500+ expenditure for no real reason aside from feeling more obligated to work out…

Good luck with your endeavor and remember, diet is a bad word, you need to change the way you eat forever…otherwise you’ll be on the same rollercoaster for a while.

Good luck! I am doing the same, had my first swimming session again since months. Wait lifting is great for getting stronger but i think you can better focus on the cardio 3 times a week and weight lifting 2 times a week. That will make you lose the fat much faster.

I’m currently in the worst shape of my life right now. I think I just spend way to much time on the computer these days and it’s affecting me in a very bad way.

If worse comes to worse, do not go towards another surgery.

When you start looking too skinny, people start talking about how ugly you are. This is how it is for me because when I was 200 pounds for about 1 year, everyone remembered how I looked. After I lost 50 pounds, my family started hating it!

I think the trick is to do exercise that is fun for you. Personally, I can’t do the gym cause I get bored out of my mind.

Take a martial arts class, do some yoga, play some sports, get outdoors… whatever it is that you will actually enjoy – and thus will keep doing.

I think the trick is to make healthy lifestyle changes and let the results happen over time. Diets and short-term goals only go so far IMHO.

Sounds like you and I are in the same boat and weight category. I was up around 225 in late September. Since then I’ve cut out pasta, french fries, late night snacks, and limited fast food to once a month. Without exercise I am down to 200 now. My doc wants me to get to 185-190, but I’ll settle for 195. I’m 6′.
