ShoeMoney Busted Drunk Driving Homicide

by Jeremy Schoemaker on November 26, 2008 · 95 comments

Last weekend on Saturday night I was invited to go out with a bunch of my friends.    We went out and I had way to much to drink got behind the wheel of my car and ran someone over.  Just like that some stupid decisions ruined what I had worked so hard for all my life until that point.  Then I woke up.  It was a bad dream.

It really made me think how easy something so horrible like that can happen.   I don’t think I have operated a motor vehicle under the influence since college but in my dream the situation seemed to just happen.

This holiday season please don’t put yourself in a situation where you end up driving drunk.

And on that note.  Happy Thanksgiving!

This should prove to be an interesting keyword experiment. Wonder what Google is returning around these keywords……shoemoney drunk driving is #1 & 2, with twitter being #3….and as for “drunk driving” shoemoney is on the front page, under “blog posts about drunk driving”

Impressive stuff, it does indicate that pretty much whatever Jeremy decides to chat about is pretty much guaranteed front page placings on Google.

Sometimes is is truly a relief to wake up and realise that wasn’t your true reality. Sometimes we can learn the lessons without having to pay the price, thank goodness! The bottom line is that drinking and driving is something that can really ruin your life in the blink of an eye. Not a lesson any of us want to experience first hand.

Good words and hope everyone listens. In today’s age we all get cynical and jaded, but it just take a split-second. Makes me think of the times I have been out with friends on the weekend, only to find out Monday that something horrible happened on the way home. Never me but always the “other ones”. You can’t buck the odds forever. The only safe route is like making money, plan ahead.

The other bad dream is you drink a lot, not so much that you can’t drive, man, you can hold your liquor and you always drive perfectly! Yet one night someone swerves across the median, in front of you and hits you head on. Totally, totally their fault, your airbag goes off and you survive. Theirs doesn’t and they die. Lots of witnesses testify, you were driving perfectly! But, since there is a death, its mandatory blood tests and since you are over the limit its a mandatory 5 year sentence before the possibility of parole….so much for being able to handle it.

I don’t know about Nebraska, but in CA if you get a DUI you might as well be charged with murder. They throw the BOOK at you. And rightfully so. A $20,40,60, or even $100 taxi cab is pennies compared to what you’ll pay if you get a DUI.

I used to make the mistake of driving drunk, but I have since moved to a big city where taxicabs are everywhere and cheap.

Sucks living in rural/suburban areas where you have to drive 15-20 miles just to find a good place to kick it.

Nothing pisses me off more then hearing about someone getting killed by a drunk driver during the Holidays. Be smart! In CA during the Holidays signs are everywhere that say to call 911 if you see someone you even think might be a little bit drunk. I got cell phone in hand ready to do just that.

Reply

I’ve heard of people calling 911 to pick them up cause they are drunk. Think about it, if you tell the cops your drunk and need a ride home, they will take you home.

The local news mentioned tonight that there was a nation wide law enforcement reminders/presence to dissuade from drinking and driving this holiday. Hopefully, the feds kicked down some bucks for cop overtime.

Keep in mind “Free cab month” [officially safe ride home month] arrives in Omaha on Monday! Its the once a year for a month reprieve by making the right choice and using a cab instead of driving “deal” sponsored by Hauptman O’Brien in OMaha.

(Disclosure: I have nothing to do with Hauptman O’Brien but free cab is always welcome in my book. Make sure to tip well!)

Totally agree. My buddy got busted for drunk driving because some one hit him! Goes to show that you don’t have to be the one who hits some one, just be drunk and be involved in an accident and you’re still up a creek.

For a DUI here in the states you’re looking at minimum $5000 in legal fees, a night in the tank, and about a year of AA meetings. Not worth it at all.

Of course, it is inevitable in such a kind of situations, just enjoy, nothing wrong in it, but we should try to comfort ourselves in a safer side (not possible always but almost) be prepared not only for enjoyment but also a small plan after the occasion how to post us safe home, and as u safe home have more.., (not injuring ourselves and disturbing others simultaneously)

I remember watching Oprah one time and she had this family that were in a limo that was hit head-on by a drunk driver. The mother told her story… I was in tears as she recounted sitting on the side of the road while she held her 7 year old daughters severed head. I was horrified just listening to her. Oprah asked her what she hoped to accomplish by telling her story and she said, “Don’t drink and drive.. not even one drink.” I have never forgotten that woman and the image she painted of that night. I will never drink and drive out of respect for her and the memory of her daughter. I still get shivers just thinking about it. :(

Jeremy, Oh…that was a scary dream. Every bar should have an alarm that goes off at the door, you have to breathe into a tube, and if the red lights and siren are triggered you are gently guided to the ‘no-driving allowed’ room for a free trip home. I know some Mom’s and Dad’s who would have welcomed such a service. So many wasted innocent lives..

Happy Thanksgiving!

DUI is such a serious issue and getting caught one time will change your life in a bad way. It’s just not worth the risk or getting caught.
