Posted on: October 13th, 2008 by Jeremy Schoemaker
Its been a while since I have taken open questions. With all the travel I just have not had the time but there were a couple from comments that I wanted to answer.
Fire Away-
Closed pending answers later today (going to write them on the plane home).
Hi I am Jeremy Schoemaker and ShoeMoney.com is my blog. 99% of the post here are done by me but you will see others occasionally make guest posts. This blog is fun to write but for my day job I run several online companies.

How do you get around Google’s Quality Score issues when driving MANY keywords to the same landing page? I have 210 keywords in 190 adgroups and they all goto the same landing page that is generally about the same topic.
October 14, 2008 at 9:50 am
You mentioned in a recent post that you were 50k in debt before your ship came in. Did you incur a lot of that debt on failed business attempts before one finally worked out?
October 14, 2008 at 9:41 am
How are you approaching getting good writers for Fighters.com?
October 14, 2008 at 9:31 am
What is the best way to promote affiliate offers now that Google has hikes the prices for ppc on affiliates?
I know you said a few months ago that adsense arbitrage was still possible…do you still think so? How?
October 14, 2008 at 9:29 am
have you ever ridden a motorcycle?
October 14, 2008 at 9:26 am
1 – Have you ever done usability testing on any of your sites?
2 – How do you plan to monetize Fighters.com?

I read in one of your posts that you did coding PHP. What was your first work in PHP? Do you still like to code?

What blogs do you read and comment on? Or is it difficult to find time to comment at all?

We always wish we had extra time in our hands to either finish a project, relax, exercise. If you had an extra 8 hours a day. What would you spend that time doing and why?
October 14, 2008 at 8:17 am
Could you name several websites that you own, beside fighters.com? I’d like to have a look and learn without reading a blog post.
October 14, 2008 at 8:13 am
Hi Shoemoney, i already earn like 60$-100$ per day with affiliation and online marketing but i don’t know why i’m not abble to reach 150$ or 200$ per day same when i set a bigger budget in Adcenter, Adwords and Adbrite..
This look like i already reach the complete audience for the products i promote. I Also want to know in adwords how to have alut of 0.5 cents clicks or cheaper?
Thanks for your time Shoemoney!

October 14, 2008 at 7:17 am
What things you suggest for someone to know before trying PPC-Affiliate marketing?
October 14, 2008 at 6:58 am
Is fighters.com a little more difficult than you imagined? There seems to be other sites that have popped up that are similiar to yours, namely mmajacked which is owned by chuck liddell.
How is the news aspect going to work with fighters.com? Are you just going to be a news aggregator or are you hoping to break news at some point? Just as a tip, the blog section needs some work. I think you need to hire an MMA guru similiar to jordan breen at sherdog.
October 14, 2008 at 6:20 am
Recently you said (in your keynote) that a strong work ethic doesn’t come easy for you, yet you attribute your success to hard work. What do you do to keep yourself focused and moving forward?
October 14, 2008 at 6:14 am
How do you work through “The Dip” with your sites? I know Auction Ads was a great success from the get go, but I have to assume other projects get stuck in the gray area. Are you quick to ditch them or do you fight through to get them successful?
October 14, 2008 at 5:57 am
If you could would you have started your business when you were younger? do you think it’s a major advantage starting it from college/school or people wouldn’t take you serious for being so young?
October 14, 2008 at 5:02 am
Whats the biggest advantage of being bald and its disadvantage (based on your own experience)?
October 14, 2008 at 4:44 am
Jeremy,
Your blog seems to have shifted away from what made it so popular in the first place. So few who have been successful like yourself actually share good ideas and experience with those trying to work their way up. When will you go back to posting the kind of info about HOW you are making money like you did back in 2006 when you shared results of your ringtones PPC campaigns and other MMO activities?
October 14, 2008 at 4:41 am
What do you think Kimbo Slice’s future is with MMA?
October 14, 2008 at 4:18 am
Will you be at Pubcon in Nov? With T-shirts?
October 14, 2008 at 4:15 am
Do you do memes? I tagged you for one on my blog….:)
October 14, 2008 at 3:54 am
They say we’re in for tough economic times — how will you weather the storm?
October 14, 2008 at 3:41 am
In your opinion why do you think people threaten and try to ruin your businesses/websites.
October 14, 2008 at 3:31 am
When will you start doing some more helpful posts? Most of your posts nowadays tend to be interviews, seminars you’ve been too and pictures of yourself in companies t-shirts. Why not make posts giving tips and observations, helping new and even established webmasters?
October 14, 2008 at 3:25 am
In Making Money Online Point of View …
Will you suggest to make only 1 blog and make it popular or make a network of niche blog. ?
October 14, 2008 at 3:21 am
Based on your experience, What Would you think will be the most profitable niche… Tech, News, Gossip, Marketing, Blogging etc…
What could you comment about the News that Bloggers are just being paid with $25 as an Average ?
October 14, 2008 at 7:56 am
The $25 isn’t related to blog owners. Its related to people who blog on blogs which therefore would exclude Jeremy as he is a blog owner
October 14, 2008 at 3:01 am
The traditional “web metrics” are the number of unique users, and the pageviews. For the blogosphere, do you think there are other metrics? feed RSS subscribers? number of comments? inbound links?
October 14, 2008 at 2:50 am
I have followed most, if not all of your interviews (audio/video/text) and it seemed like the key to your success was mostly because of your persistence, hard work and a bit of luck
Now whatever you do or start is backed up with a lot of “cash” (thanks to the fortune that you have already built).
I am wondering when you first started, how much money did you actually spent on your business? What was your initial investment?
October 14, 2008 at 2:47 am
Does leaving comments on popular blogs with your website and a key word useful for SEO?
October 14, 2008 at 2:29 am
What is your preferred business model when selling adspace via google admanager to companies/advertisers?
– pageview (e.g. CPM they per $XX for each 1000 times their ad appears on a specific page or pagetype)
– Time (the advertiser gets a specific slot for a given amount of time for a fixed price, no matter how many pageviews or clicks there are)
– per click
– other???
Grateful for any insight as to WHEN which of the above works best (what type of site).
October 14, 2008 at 7:55 am
It used to be on a monthly basis, i don’t think it will have changed that much since converting to google manager.
October 14, 2008 at 2:26 am
What dou you think about mobile ads? It is the next big thing or not.
October 14, 2008 at 2:26 am
“Everyone” talks a lot about how Google Adsense is the “lazy man’s” approach to making money online. But I’ve found that it’s practically the only thing that works for “non-review/recommendation” sites. Am I missing some info about other big advertising networks out there that are not affiliate based?
My point being that affiliate marketing only surpasses google adsense if you have a recommendation site or review site since then the visitor would be there looking for products/services which is simply not the case in other sites e.g. news, community, social networks, gaming etc.
Surely you must feel this as well for fighting.com?
October 14, 2008 at 2:25 am
Did you pay for your blog’s design facelift, or did UBD (Nate Whitehill) do for you for free as a marketing initiative for their company? I mean you and John Chow are one of the major popular clients in their profile.
Just curious
October 14, 2008 at 7:54 am
It was a free service by Nate Whitehill.
October 14, 2008 at 2:22 am
Generally, how do you get the actual money from companies that want to advertise on your site. What’s the process? Do you get the money by check or do you utilize paypal or how?
October 14, 2008 at 1:42 am
You have had experience with business partners – what was the most challenging experience you had when dealing with a business partner?
October 14, 2008 at 1:23 am
why do you think your mma picks are so bad?
October 14, 2008 at 12:49 am
What makes you say “This project just isn’t working”. meaning in the online business, when do you give up on it. I read before that you had failures, what made you just accept defeat? (time?, money spent?, etc)
Right now I’m sure most of us are still busting our butts off to make it online. Any advice to when we should give up and move on and just charge it to experience?
This would really help a lot of us
October 14, 2008 at 12:44 am
Have you ever come close to shutting this blog down? If yes, when and why?
October 14, 2008 at 12:33 am
I’ve made $8.06 on my motivation website so far! Woohoo!
But my question is, if I’m running a website that is all about teaching people the truth about health and fitness and also giving them guides, reviews, tips, etc.. Should I be letting companies advertise on my site with their gimmick diets and products that we all know are usually scams or just common knowledge with a good sales pitch?
I do want to make money, but I don’t want to give readers the impression that I’m trying to sell them something that I don’t believe in… From your perspective as an experience person with advertising, does it REALLY matter what you advertise or do people understand that you only have the adverts there to make money?
October 14, 2008 at 8:03 am
If your niche is to scam people then by all means put the gimmick diets sites ups there if you want quality then find quality products so that your readership will trust you. If they don’t trust what you are doing then they won’t/couldn’t trust anything that you write on there because you are “knowingly scaming them.” Question: would you be a friend to someone who would let you get scammed? I wouldn’t either!
October 14, 2008 at 12:01 am
How do I keep each paragraph in my posts from automatically indenting?
October 13, 2008 at 11:49 pm
vey good initiative. thank you shoemoney.
October 13, 2008 at 11:52 pm
I agree it’s really nice of Jeremy to do this! Really few people that are big share their secrets. Jeremy is being really loyal to his readers by taking time to do this, Thank you Jeremy!
October 14, 2008 at 3:27 am
Yup I agree it is only here you can learn secrets from the man who can generate lots of money thru net
October 13, 2008 at 11:49 pm
Do you outsource anything to other countries? Any good or bad experiences with that?
October 13, 2008 at 11:46 pm
What’s your stand on outsourcing of projects that you could do yourself, but if outsourced could save you your valuable time?
October 13, 2008 at 11:37 pm
When you started to make passive monthly income, how much did you know about making a monthly passive income?
October 13, 2008 at 11:36 pm
What are your top three destinations for a family vacation? Either places you have been or places you want to go.
October 13, 2008 at 11:33 pm
What would you rather do: attend a good university with high fees to get a great degree before you start your venture or attend a normal university with a full ride scholarship and start during college?
October 13, 2008 at 11:12 pm
What affiliate marketing (or blogging) conferences would you rank as the most valuable for somebody new to the world of making money online? Perhaps the top 2 or 3 that stand out the most.
October 13, 2008 at 11:00 pm
This question came up on my blog, and one of my readers suggested I ask you
‘Do bald men wash their head with soap or shampoo?’
October 13, 2008 at 10:57 pm
Coffee Cups…The Mountains….The Ocean….etc…
Do you think the days of all kinds of fancy headers on a blog are over ?
October 13, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Hey Shoe, what’s your view on the current economy recession? Stanley
October 13, 2008 at 10:50 pm
How did you make your first 100 dollars online?
October 14, 2008 at 8:19 am
I think he blogged about it, I remember reselling items from eShops for profit.
October 13, 2008 at 10:33 pm
If you had a killer idea for a website, but it was related to porn, would you still do it?
October 13, 2008 at 10:33 pm
With so many shows out there, how do you pick which ones you’ll attend?
October 13, 2008 at 10:21 pm
I tend to be very anal about the quality of the content that gets put on my websites. Do you have any advice on ‘breaking away’ from previous projects. . .and letting/paying others to do it for you. So that I can focus on other parts of the website(and future projects)?
October 13, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Welcome back Jeremy, it’s good to have Shoemoney.com back up again! I thought you decided to quit blogging today, at least that’s what you said in your Twitter. It’s a good thing I’m subscribed to your feeds otherwise I would’ve missed this opportunity!
Here are some questions I’d like to ask:
)?
1. How do you handle DDOS attacks (I’m sure you get a lot of those
2. How do you promote CPA offers without making it seem like spam to your readers?
3. Is there any free software out there similar to Compete.com that allows me to track keywords my competitors are ranking at?
October 13, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Is website one word or two? Is it web site or website? I always spell it website obviously from my first question. I have seen it spelled as two words more often lately. I have had some people try to correct my spelling of it too!
Please clear up this very important matter
Thanks Man!
October 13, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Do you have a daily “Must Do List” of the top things you try to accomplish each day with respect to your blogs? A set of repeatable tasks that you feel help propel your sites to the next level.
October 14, 2008 at 9:34 am
I also wonder do you work on longer term goals, i.e. 3 or 6 months on daily basis.
October 13, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Do you type up your own posts or do you dictate them? You do an awful lot of long posts to bang them out.
October 13, 2008 at 10:05 pm
How do you prevent hacking, DOS attacks and all sort of hacking on your websites? Security is one of the most challenging issue when becoming a “popular” website with let’s say over 5,000+ unique a day and at the same time most people ignore or don’t care about this issue. This question is inspired by what happened today and it would be interesting to know how you prevent/deal with that problem/reality.
October 13, 2008 at 10:41 pm
Oops, missed your post Ben! I asked Shoemoney the same question as well. This is the third time this month I’ve seen one of my favorite blogs being DDOSED!
October 13, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Seriously what do you think about the topcommenters here? I mean yes you’re running a contest and its understandable but its just insane to see yourtop commenter has about 100+ in a week. Does it make the comments here more of a less value?
October 13, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Melvin, I think you’re referring to me. If you take a look at my comments you will notice that I have contributed a lot of quality comments to Shoemoney. None of my comments are spam and I haven’t noticed anyone else spamming here either. I’ve seen people making a lot of great comments here at Shoemoney’s blog and having an actual discussion. I think we need a forum here.
October 14, 2008 at 4:45 am
Oh thanks for clarifying. Btw, this site has a forum before andI think it was not so much popular so shoe took it off…
October 13, 2008 at 9:59 pm
How did you get into programming and how did you start learning it?
October 13, 2008 at 9:50 pm
How about an updated pic of Juliet and Joslyn?
October 13, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Jeremy, where does your creativity come from? What do you do to get new ideas for your blog?
October 13, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Jeremy,
Pls tell us all the equipment you use for making your videos and also the software. Do you use lights?

October 13, 2008 at 9:38 pm
What’s your favorite flavor of Runza?
October 13, 2008 at 9:34 pm
how long did it take you to learn programming and what were your best resources?
October 13, 2008 at 9:21 pm
What vehicles do you own?
October 13, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Regarding your Shoemoney Tools, did you develop all these tools yourself or did you contract the programming out?
October 13, 2008 at 11:00 pm
Hey Chris, I know the answer to your question so I will post it here to save Jeremy some time. I checked on the Shoemoney Tools page and found out that both he and his team built. Darren at ProBlogger mentions it in his review below:
“What we have in Shoemoney tools is a collection of the main tools that Jeremy and his team have built to do his analysis. They have personally helped to landing him many many hundreds of thousands of dollars in his own web sites and I’m sure they’ll be useful for many.”
October 13, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Do you still do PPC Affiliate Marketing? If not, why not?
October 13, 2008 at 9:01 pm
What are your top 3 tips on building an authority “monster site” – like fighters.com?
October 14, 2008 at 8:07 am
dito to this question too. I’m a wedding photographer that writes about relatioinships and such. Hey, I can’t be the photographer that has couples that I photographed divorcing, that would be bad for business. Plus, if you are in a realtionship, and your normal you will want to make it the best that it can be, right.
So yeah, shoe give us a few tips in creating a site that will be viewed as a leader.
October 13, 2008 at 8:58 pm
Also, welcome back from the DOS attack. Job well done to you and your team for getting your site back up.
October 13, 2008 at 9:33 pm

October 13, 2008 at 9:58 pm

October 13, 2008 at 10:31 pm
thanks
October 13, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Was that why the site was down today?
October 13, 2008 at 10:50 pm
Yes it was down due to a DDOS attack. If you look at the above comments you will notice that Tushar Dhoot posted Shoemoney’s tweet about the DDOS attack.
October 13, 2008 at 8:57 pm
What is the single greatest reason you think most web entreprenuers will fail?
What can they do to succeed instead?
Sorry…2 questions instead of one
October 13, 2008 at 8:47 pm
You say Fighters.com will be your next huge thing, How would you profit from a sport website?
I ask because I also own a sport website and running affiliated programs not related to the sport is hard to convert.
October 13, 2008 at 8:41 pm
What are the 3 subscription based tools you would recommend (outside of shoemoney tools)
