Pay Day One – Free Shirt Friday

by Jeremy Schoemaker on October 3, 2008 · 109 comments

PayDayOne.com is a pay day loan website.  They have a quick application process and then the money is deposited directly into your checking account.  Pretty nice.

Thanks for the shirt!

I have to agree, “pay day” loans attract those who have a low grasp on their finances. It’s truly one of those money lending operations that makes a profit from those in a regrettable position. It further cascades them into a whirlpool of debt in exchange for short, temporary relief from their financial woes.

I actively avoid promoting PPC campaigns that provide pay day loans for this very reason. Its’ a explicitly negative monetisation of the poor, un-educated masses ;(

Reply

10 jim October 4, 2008 at 12:32 am

Or people who are in a tough spot… you think banks lend to people who actually need money? I’m not a pay day loan or check cashing joint apologist but there’s a business reason they exist and that’s to fill a market need. You think $5 ringtones aren’t a rip either? :)

Reply

11 Tushar Dhoot October 4, 2008 at 4:16 pm

Or fake weight loss solutions…
Or “free trials” that bill you $50 a month…
Or credit cards with 1% starting and 40% next month…

Yea, the fact of the matter is that shady companies pay more than legitimate companies.

Good point, I think he puts a $1 bill on the outside so he doesn’t look rich, meanwhile the rest are 100′s.

Reply

Yea, I think it`s much better for branding when they just have their name there without the dot com as it`s a pretty safe guess.

I hate those pay day advance places. What makes you think you’re gonna be able to pay off what you borrowed with your next paycheck whenever this one didn’t pay off what bills and debt you already had racked up?

Once you do it once, if you’re not very careful, you can get stuck in an infinite loop, and end up going bankrupt.

Reply

78 Zeeshan October 3, 2008 at 7:34 pm

Anyone else find the branding for the service also slightly confusing?

The logo states “Pay Day One One” at a quick glance. I think if they placed their focal site address below the logo, it may have helped prevent typos and confusion.

I bet a lot of people try “payday1.com”, “payday1one.com”, “paydayone1.com”, “payday11.com” and other similar variants when trying to access the site.

Reply

79 Tushar Dhoot October 4, 2008 at 4:20 pm

You bring up a good point. When you look back it does seem like it could confuse someone. Maybe the 1 should have been hovering above the text?

pay day loans are horrible. i remember reading about an older man that took out a pay day loan for a few hundred dollars and wound up paying thousands over 10 years or more and wound up homeless.

the pay day loan company had taken control of his paychecks and was actually paying HIM a small amount each month out of his disability check and keeping the rest to pay back the ‘loan’… ouch.

Reply

96 Acai Berry Side Effects October 5, 2008 at 2:18 pm

I wouldn’t say that these companies are the cause of the credit crisis, that would be the fault of the mortgage loan industry. but the pay day loan guys are built on the same premise.

1. Give a person money that they can’t afford to pay back.
2. Take everything they have.

Reply

97 lori October 5, 2008 at 5:48 pm

these guys are much worse than what we think of as predatory lenders, they totally take advantage of the poor and stupid and leave them in a bind costing hundreds to thousands of dollars!

So obviously payday loans aren’t for everyone, but there is definitely a segment of the population out there for whom this fulfills a specific need. You have to remember that these companies assume a lot of risk by lending to these folks who typically no one else will lend to.
Looking at a short term loan in terms of APR, really doesn’t make much sense because the balance typically is paid of in much less than a year, but if you must, look at the other options if you find yourself in a bind and can’t pay a doctors bill, need to repair your car or something else.

* If you have a 14-day, $100 no fax payday loan with a $15 loan fee — you pay 391% APR

* If you have a $100 bounced check with $54 NSF/merchant fees to be repaid in 14 days — you pay 1,409% APR

* If you have a $100 credit card balance with a $37 late fee to be repaid in 14 days — you pay 965% APR

* If you have a $100 utility bill with $46 late/reconnect fees to be repaid in 14 days — you pay 1,203% APR
