Today on Techcrunch there is a article about SpeedDate.com and how they just got 6m in funding.
ShoeMoney readers might remember about this time last year I interviewed Dan from speeddate.com about his new startup:
I love stories like this. When I originally met Dan he was looking for just a small amount of seed money… just to help him get it going. And now its big time. Congrats to them!

Yeah 6 mil is a little more than seed money. Congrats!

People including me often dream of doing interviews of great men.Any way cool video

it’s very hard to compete with the big boys when it comes to online dating , 6m seems like a penny compared to big dating sites budget.
September 7, 2008 at 3:50 am
Some dating sites make big coin, 99% do not earn a penny.
September 1, 2008 at 5:38 pm
It amazes me some of the sites that are getting funded.
September 1, 2008 at 7:25 am
yaaaahoooo – a way to go
!
September 1, 2008 at 12:20 am
LOL now this is my kind of dating!! Online and fast!
August 30, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Given the number of closet romantics around, such a site is bound to succeed.
August 30, 2008 at 5:43 pm
good job guys, dreams do come true!
August 30, 2008 at 12:31 pm
It is always nice to hear another success stories like this..
August 30, 2008 at 10:04 am
Congratulations to them, and to their awesome budget! Imagine $6m *drool*
August 29, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Excellent, now they just need an affiliate program!
August 30, 2008 at 3:12 am
Expect one in the next couple of months. I’m sure they’ll be rolling one out now that they have some serious funding.
August 29, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Congrats to him! Success stories make me happy.
August 29, 2008 at 10:45 am
‘t was a great idea, but as has been said, can easily be duplicated by the bigger sites if they wanted to. Still, he’s already got the funding
August 30, 2008 at 5:46 am
To further my comment above – if he was looking to be successful I’d be using the site as a proof of concept but I’d be looking to package the idea as a product for the bigger sites.
If you make it easier and more cost effective for them to buy it from you instead of develop there own then you’re onto a winner.
August 29, 2008 at 9:11 am
It’s an interesting concept but I don’t think it’s a viable business in itself. I think if it begins to take off you’ll see it incorporated by the bigger players into there site.
August 29, 2008 at 4:02 am
6 million funding is simply gr8 hope he makes right use of the bucks
August 29, 2008 at 3:23 am
That is actually a pretty cool idea – sad, but cool.
August 29, 2008 at 3:00 am
Now not to mention speedy funding here…
August 29, 2008 at 2:56 am
dating has always been fun… now with the funding… its gonna rock…
August 29, 2008 at 12:04 am
great. Now girls are going to know I’m a wierdo right off the bat. I think I’ll stick to stalking teenie bops on myspace.
August 28, 2008 at 11:50 pm
That’s a great starting point for them, hopefully now they can turn that into a huge ROI. Not an easy feat these days but there’s hope for everyone.
August 28, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Thats awesome and congrats to them. They grew tremendously large
August 28, 2008 at 9:11 pm
That’s alot of seed money!
August 28, 2008 at 7:25 pm
Thats a nice chunk of change. Way to go speeddate.com!
August 28, 2008 at 7:00 pm
I myself don’t see the appeal in online dating and meeting people for love online but it seems like it is a niche that converts well and there is a hell of a lot of money in it.
August 28, 2008 at 6:21 pm
This is great news considering that venture capitol is not falling off trees as it once was.
August 28, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Wow! This is awesome! Six million in funding is not bad at all! Cool idea too!
August 28, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Genius idea for a dating website.
August 29, 2008 at 6:45 am
I think that any idea which brings his master 6 million, there is a good idea. I would even say that this is a fantastic idea. -)))
August 28, 2008 at 2:25 pm
How??? How does someone get seed money or millions in investment capitol? Where did he find the money or find someone to listen to his idea?
August 28, 2008 at 2:13 pm
they got the money now, let’s see what they will do with them
August 28, 2008 at 2:08 pm
6 million is pretty good for this type of web site.
August 29, 2008 at 6:42 am
I think this is good when people can quickly get a successful project. This provides an opportunity to feel confident.
August 28, 2008 at 1:38 pm
It’s always fun to see the little guy hit it big time! *6 million* whoa….
August 28, 2008 at 1:01 pm
It’s great when a good idea can find funding, I thought it was a clever idea when you first posted it but Dan never actually says you chat via webcam (though he implies it).
August 28, 2008 at 12:44 pm
Actually, I should be getting $6 in funding soon too. Oh wait, you said $6 MILLION. I mis-read…lol.
August 28, 2008 at 1:06 pm
haha
Nice site! With those ads in the sidebar, I’m sure you’re not getting less than $6
August 28, 2008 at 12:35 pm
Cool, congrats to those guys. Nice site. That is one of those ideas where you kick yourself for not thinking of it first.
August 28, 2008 at 12:32 pm
That’s very good news. Shows you that VC’s are not afraid of the economic slump we;ve been since 2007..
August 30, 2008 at 3:14 am
Thats because they created their funds before the slump.
August 28, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Congrats to these guys! The dating space is so hot right now, and there is money flying everywhere. I hope they can get some good traction and make some money.
Also congrats to shoe for not copying and pasting the whole techcrunch story even though he has “permission”
August 28, 2008 at 12:23 pm
Seriously. There’s a ton of money to be had in the online dating scene. This guy is taking a pretty new approach and using a ton of video so that you can’t really fake it.
August 28, 2008 at 11:59 am
great concept but i dont know if they reach eharmony status or even match.com status. why folks are picky with who they are communicating with on dating sites . and a great portion of folks on dating sites arent very good looking, have flaws, lack of selfesteem etc….. this site forces you to have 1-1 interactions where such flaws cannot be hidden through building up your profile to be more then you really are ,photoshopping, or stealing someone else pics. the reason why eharmony is so successful is 1.the folks on there are serious about dating 2.good marketing 3,good user experience 4.paid service. if this site can draw serious folks who are serious about dating it could be something special but i fear it will be nothing but a toy to the 18-28 demographic mostly female crowd
August 28, 2008 at 11:47 am
Read that also this am in Techcrunch. That is an amazing amount in a short period.
August 30, 2008 at 3:14 am
Sites have gained more then this before leaving stealth mode. Its a decent chunk for the service being provided.
August 28, 2008 at 11:46 am
This actually sounds like fun… I’d participate AND invest with it
September 1, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Actually that is a lucky guy,
