12 Seconds Micro Video

Posted on: July 25th, 2008 by Jeremy Schoemaker

12 seconds

New site called 12 Seconds just started and my friend Big Dave sent me a invite to the beta. I might have a bunch of beta invites soon… I will keep you posted.

The service is pretty simple… record 12 seconds of video. Its like the twitter of video. Its pretty sweet but a little intimidating!

Our bandwidth in South Africa is slow, 12 seconds wont use much.

I think it depends on what you’re trying to do. If you just make a short video with only video (as shoe did above), then you click record, start talking, and click stop / (or you’re cut off when 12 seconds is done?). Perhaps if you want to put some text in the video it would be a little more complex.

I’d love to try it out soon!

Like this concept a lot. If you do one every day as an update / hello, it makes you get right to the point then cuts you off! Wasting neither your time or others time!

Seems like a cool idea but how time consuming is it to edit the clips, does it take more time to edit/compress/upload the clip than its worth for 12 seconds of video? Or is the process user-friendly and automated so all I have to do is fire up the webcam and click a button?

Guess you better cut the intro short. :-)

  17. sockmoney
    July 26, 2008 at 9:33 am

Porn is about the only thing you can effectively show in 12 seconds… ;-)

I agree with everyone else. It should be 30 seconds.

  18. Zak Show

20 sec may be much better!

  19. Dick
    July 26, 2008 at 7:46 am

    It’s a micro Video. 24 seconds is not a micro…
    haha

  20. Zak Show
    July 26, 2008 at 7:17 am

Pretty cool, but why exactly 12 sec? Why not 20?

  21. petnos
    July 26, 2008 at 6:32 am

its too short. what can you show in 12 seconds???

  22. Patrick
    July 25, 2008 at 11:09 pm

It’s worth a try, but I don’t think it will end up working out too well.

  23. FurnitureQuest
    July 25, 2008 at 10:50 pm

Sweet… Now the 15 seconds of video I can record on my cell phone is actually useful for something. Also, like the idea of short. Who can spare a whole minute to watch an online video anyway?

  24. DotDriven
    July 25, 2008 at 10:48 pm

probably the reason for 12 seconds…bandwidth would be much lighter than longer vids obviously. Though don’t know if that was a consideration in the name idea…probably more trying to be “unique” than worried about bandwidth.

  25. DotDriven
    July 25, 2008 at 10:46 pm

I could see this being a bigger idea more in the future as “mobile video” is more common. So, like, someone on their iphone taking and sending quick video updates rather than texting their tweets.

That and it could be the start of 12 second pron lol.

How are you getting around the change in the WHOIS data?

  27. Sohan
    July 25, 2008 at 10:04 pm

I don’t really feel comfortable making videos lol. Plus it will kill the bandwith for a lot of people. Twitter is easier.

  28. Dan
    July 25, 2008 at 7:50 pm

Should be interesting to see how it is used…

  29. Chris Abernethy
    July 25, 2008 at 7:48 pm

Sounds cool, but creating 12 seconds of video seems like a little too much work for this to catch on like twitter… who knows though.

  30. TEKFIRM
    July 25, 2008 at 6:13 pm

You are not supposed to give a lecture , it’s like twitter only few sentences … that’s the idea .

if he made it longer it would just be like youtube …

Now this is innovative but I agree with Anty and Wesley, 12 seconds is too short. At least 25 would have been better.

  32. anty
    July 25, 2008 at 5:57 pm

12 seconds are a little bit too short, at least for me.

  33. Wesley
    July 25, 2008 at 5:43 pm

Interesting concept, but I’d have done at least double the seconds (24seconds).

shoe, can i get one of those invites?

  36. Tyson
    July 25, 2008 at 4:05 pm

Sorry, but 12 seconds is just too short for video. 30 seconds would be the minimum. I see where you’re going… 140 characters (twitter) … 12 seconds… but it’s just short, period.

    July 25, 2008 at 3:54 pm

I’m not sure. I actually like this concept better than the twitter idea. Video is more personal. It does take a bit more time to create and upload the video, but I think this could work if the same people that hyped up twitter, hype this up. With Jeremy posting about it, it just got a big boost.

  38. Andrew
    July 25, 2008 at 3:51 pm

20seconds.com was probably taken already, as was 15seconds.com, heck even 99seconds.com is taken.

If anyone is interested 115seconds.com is available lol

  39. Andrew
    July 25, 2008 at 3:40 pm

If you’re a fast talker, you could probably fit a lot into 12 seconds. :-D

  40. Craig
    July 25, 2008 at 3:28 pm

great concept but not enough time for the average user to say what they need to, it would have to be broken up into multiple video posts

  41. Ash
    July 25, 2008 at 3:11 pm

12 seconds seems like a cool idea. Can’t see it being of the same magnitude of what twitter was though

  42. Matt Leo
    July 25, 2008 at 2:55 pm

Looks like he had to watch the clock. Definitely need to be a fast talker to deliver your message.

I like the way they decided that 12 seconds was the ideal time:

“Because anything longer is boring. The scientists here at the 12seconds dodecaplex have conducted countless hours of research to determine the precise amount of time it takes for boredom or apathy to set in during typical Internet video viewing. Our patent pending Electro-Tear-Duct Prongers have determined that exactly 12 seconds of video is the ideal amount of time to keep anything interesting.”

And you know what? I reckon they have got it spot on!

  44. Jerry
    July 25, 2008 at 1:58 pm

Is 12 seconds even enough? I thing 20 would be good.

Super-cool and I have been waiting for the true Youtube/Twitter mashup. I thought it might be Seesmic — and I love the community-vibe there — but I just don’t have time to follow threads full of 5 minute videos.

Would love to check it out.

Shoe speaking of your tools I signed up yesterday and scored a domain with 85 .edu links and 12 .mil links and today it had over 800 pages indexed. I will be spending a lot of money in shoemoney tools for sure!
