.me Landrush Starts 8am PST Tomorrow

by Jeremy Schoemaker on July 16, 2008 · 154 comments

New Top Level Domain extension opening tomorrow .me.   The .me TLD was intended to make more money be the new “hip” space for you…  I guess .name was not cool enough.

Anyway there is no wonky requirements and with a “me” ending people should be able to come up with some fun sounding (and hard to type) domains.

So hit me with your best/funniest  .me idea!  I wont register them…  trust.me

iLike.me
hate.me
love.me
smoke.me
digg.me
add.me
discover.me
trade.me
beer.me
feed.me

there can be made some nice combination with .me. Anyway, I don’t believe that any new TLD’s will have success.

Shoe

Are their high volume domain name buyers who have automated tools to go in and swoop up all the good names in the first few seconds?

Do you just use the normal GoDaddy interface or is there some sort of API for quick high volume purchasing?

Actually, the .me TLD was intended to be neither of those things. It was intended – and *is* – nothing more than the country specific TLD for Montenegro.

Trademarks are already registered, as are many of the .me domains which are now up for auction for those who tried to get them during the “land rush” period. If 2 people tried to register the same .me domain, its now up for auction between those people. The auction for the domain I tried to get starts on August 3rd, so I’m stuck waiting.

What sucks about this release is that this the the third phase in the TLD name. First is the Sunrise phase where trademarks can claim their names first. Second is the Landrush period open to the public which was back in June. According to MarketWatch over 30,000 names have already been registered including the ones I am sure that will be listed here.

Reply

38 Bryn Youngblut July 16, 2008 at 7:46 pm

I remember seeing this a few moments after it was released on godaddy and i started furiously registering all the best domain names I could come up with, after I had about 50 or so I went to pay and found out it wasn’t even open for a month plus you had to pay for two years for each domain and you weren’t even guaranteed the domain. If someone else pre-registers the same domain then it goes into a bidding war. I don’t think the .me domain will be that popular, just like all the other barely used ones out there unless you have a name ending in “me” it might be good, other than that .com is the way to go. There’s going to be many more domain suffixes coming out in the not too distant future.

To godaddy users – make sure to read the fine print. You don’t get the domain name just because you are the first to ask for it. The “sunrise” period which is about to start will simply be to collect the first batch of requests. If nobody else tries to grab the domain you want, it’s yours. If someone else DOES try to buy the same one… it gets auctioned off between all people who asked for it. Highest bidder gets it.
Also, forget asking for “google.me” because all trademark terms will go to those who prove trademark… even if they aren’t first to ask for it.

It’s not a free-for-all

People who think .me will be massively successful are delusional. Sure, there will be some domains that have success, but overall, it will be another domain that struggles to draw type-in traffic. Even memorable domains (like your buy.me example) will be typed in by people as buyme.com – it’s just so natural for people to do.

Reply

87 Web Hosting Rebates July 17, 2008 at 8:44 am

Everyone’s first thought, I’m sure. Honestly, this is one of the very FEW .me domains that makes any sense, as I’m sure it will get TONS of type in traffic (especially in the initial period when people are curious about .me domains)

Reply

88 Web Hosting Rebates July 17, 2008 at 8:50 am

If people adapt to the .me extension and will actually type it in, values will increase on the clever domains, otherwise, I can’t imagine people paying a premium for domains people will remember, but likely struggle to type in.

Subject: cheated by godaddy???

Thanks for the “.me” domain post. It gave me a head start. I was ready signed in and with the list of domains in my stickies.

I was happy i got a lot of very good domains, The amount was deducted from my paypal. i even got an email saying order successful. But i do not see these domain names listed in my account.

An hour later, i get an email from godaddy, stating that the domain could not be registered.

Is godaddy cheating me?
I booked ship.me , ping.me, ebook.me, joy.me and many others.

Need your expert advice from you as well as your readers

Reply

125 bharadwaj July 17, 2008 at 1:10 pm

godaddy just sucks!!
godaddy is one of the resellers, the list of booked names is maintained by domain.me
So, when godaddy books a domain, it has to look in to the BIG BOOK. Looks like, it is not the reality though.

The second possibility is that there are some evil crooks, snatching off good names.

I m inclined to think that the second one is true..

Yeah, same thing happened to me. Their registration process for .ME domains seems to be different. I know thousands of people must’ve been fighting for a lot of the same domains at the same time. I struck out more on good domains than on not-so-good ones, but some of the ones I’m more proud are here…

WORDPRESSTHEMESFOR.ME
GREATBLOGABOUT.ME
TEMPLATESFOR.ME
FREE-STUFF-FOR.ME

BUYTHISFOR.ME

What do you all think? I got lots of ideas to develop for these. They should keep me busy for a while.

Hey, Shoe… how many of the ones that you wanted did you get?

I think if everyone trying to register .ME domains was in the same room, there would’ve been bloodshed!

Ryan,
Good report. I hope you get to keep them.
I wonder how many millions of dollars that GoDaddy took in today, and even if they only have to refund most of it in a couple of days they have made the interest on our money.
Dirty rassafrassers.

I would also like to know what this means:
“Status: Reconcile (Refresh Page) “

let me see if I understand this…you can register a domain, pay for it and if someone else also wants to register that domain both of you would have to bid on it ? it sucks if it is so.

that means that someone else registered those domains before you…don’t worry as you will be refunded.

I had that for 2 of mine.
got the already registered email for both. Checked back an hour later and one of them disappeared and the other got confirmed and registered.

So for those ones they may be doing something to see who registered first….my best guess.

.Com is the standard, by-far. there is no question.

i wouldn’t build a site on .Me, even though it’s a prime keyword.
the only people buying .me are domain speculators.

(unless you’re able to get a high, good single word – it’s basically useless)
and even then, it’s still a relative crapshoot

I know that i ll be refunded, if the domain is not mine.
I booked only single word domains like ship.me, ping.me, aim.me and so on.
The point is i need the domains. If i get my money back, its bad.

hi,

sorry if i am offensive, but why would you want to book long names?
i would rather book myspacelayoutsforme.com rather than myspacelayoutsfor.me

i appreciate the effort, but i guess it is pointless

You’re gonna break Go Daddy.com!

(OK this was posted after the fact, and I just wanted to look psychic!)

Not offensive at all. The way I see it, it is just another way to make money… for the registrar, Montenegro, and myself. Almost all of the good domains are taken on the .COM TLD, but the domain you mentioned is even longer than the one i registered. In addition, i believe that Web 2.0, and so on, are going to be more about the users’ personal experience and a .ME domain just ‘brings it all home’ for them. Everyone wants the world to revolve around them, so this is one way of appealing to and fulfilling that niche.

I think it already broke. A lot of my attempts resulted in ‘The following domain name has failed to be registered…’ e-mails.
