Twitter Account Go Boom

by Jeremy Schoemaker on July 3, 2008 · 83 comments

My wife went into labor at 5am this morning. On the way to the hospital I shot a quick twitter sms from my phone letting people know. I got back a error message but did not think that much about it because of all the issues especially with SMS.

So as I am sitting in the hospital room I am browsing the web on my phone I try to log into twitter and it tells me that my account has been deleted but I can restore it. So I try to restore it and it tells me that it is deleted because it was in violation of terms of service.

I will tell you I sent 1 spam through twitter and used the API as it is exactly spelled out. I added and deleted some people playing with the api a few weeks back seeing how it worked but have not messed with it since.

I have always been a huge advocate of twitter and we have raved about it on our show weekly. I also have implemented twitter on my blog as you can see in the top right corner.

One thing about having a very popular site is people try to make a quick buck and target you. It looks like within minutes of the account being deleted someone made this account

http://twitter.com/shoemoneymedia

and made it look like it was me. It is NOT me.

I remember a similar thing happened to Seth Godin not to long ago.

I have bigger fish to fry right now like my wife and our new baby who could be due at any minute but I just wanted to let people know.

Hopefully twitter will return my support requests.

I can sympathize with you… It always seems when something important in your family is going on, something shitty on the web happens to you… Never fails for me!

I’ll go on a family vacation… 3 hours into the trip I find out my server is under a denial of service attack. Never fails.

You have the right attitude… Put it on the back burner and spend time doing what is important in life.

Shoe,
Step away from the electronics… It will be okay… Your family is more important than anything you could possibly be writing about. Twittering on the way to the hospital? Browsing the web from the hospital room? How about focusing a little more on family. Now, I sell smut for a living and probably should not be life coaching anybody, but for the love of Pete… Spend some time with your wife… you won’t have too many more of these moments unless you are irish catholic and plan on having a 20 pack of kids.

Hay congrats! I hope your wife and the baby is fine now!

That guy did set everything up (including background etc.) just like you.
But I don’t think you should care much right now. Fudge ‘em. Be with your family. You can deal with that crack head later :)

All the best to you & your family. Do post up some pictures of the baby later. Cheers

Congrats,

Sounds like Twitter is the New MyBlogLog for you. All these Web 2.0 companies start out wide open, then try and crack down on spam and bogus accounts. If they just invested a little more time and efforts into creating a terms of service and acceptable use policies before going public stuff like this might not happen as often.

Wow, that guy followed me and I guess I will unfollow. If you violate the Twitter TOS, they should send you a warning, not delete your account (especially a well-established one such as yours). With all the bad publicity Twitter is getting lately, this isn’t helping matters.

But on a happier note, congratulations on the baby and I hope everything went well :)
