When A Puppet Making Fun Of You Becomes More Important Then You

By Jeremy Schoemaker 42 comments

I have been a big fan of Loren Feldman for a long time. I think like 2-3 years ago when I did my first video post I was throwing him shutouts. Of all these people who “keep it real” Loren is the real mother frickin deal. The first time I met him in person he was calling out Robert Scoble at blogworld something like “Hey Bobby I bet you spend a fortune on your editor for your videos getting rid of those double/tripple chins”.

Last winter Loren introduced the Shel Israel puppet. Now I had/have absolutely NO CLUE who Shel Israel is but I thought the puppet was pretty funny. Then the puppet started interviewing people. Now the Shel Israel puppet has all the A-listers lining up for a interview. Check out the latest one with Digg creator Kevin Rose:

The puppet has interviewed the who’s who of Silicon Valley including Jason Calacanis and Michael Arrington.

Its not the first hit Loren has had and I am sure it wont be the last.

Just another example of how you can find success through creativity. He’s not just another guy interviewing people.

I’ve been watching this for a while. Shel actually had a big blowout online with Loren about this. Can’t find the link right now, but they went at it on twitter, on their blogs. Loren was just too savvy an online viral marketer to be beat though. Shel had to announce defeat. The pupppet is an awesome idea. My props to Loren.

Loren is brilliant at getting attention. The buzz is he and Shel are in on it. Look at his track record, he bashes Calacanis and Arrington and now he stays over their houses and interviews them. Everyone is waiting for the Shel puppet to stay over Scoble’s house and the big Shel puppet interview with the real Shel Israel.

Funny? I’ve never seen anything by that Feldman guy that I thought was funny or smart. He knows how to get attention, that;s for sure.

Giving the Muppets a run for their money. He also has an Oscar the Grouch kind of interview style.

A bit of the background on the puppet is actually a valuable lesson in personal branding. Loren found out that shelisreal.com was available so he scooped it and put the puppet videos on there. Shel was supposed to be part of the digerati along with Scoble and Arrington. Loren just got his digs in about Israel not being savvy enough to make sure he protected his own personal brand on the web.

When all of this went down I made sure I had name as my domain name!

LOL, Shel Israel must not have been too tough for Loren. Shel sounds and acts exactly like Loren does in all his other videos…

I agree, “China Dolls, Clowns then Puppets” can be VERY creepy. But hey, it gets attention and that’s what it’s all about.
