Switched To Google Ad Manager

Note From ShoeMoney: I asked or new guy (as of last november) – Tigh to write up his likes and dislikes of the new Google Ad Manager. Tigh had never used any sort of ad management software before including openads which is what we were running before. I just asked him to move all of our ads and zones over and gave him Barry Schwartz excellent tutorial as a guide.

I just recently switched our ads on Shoemoney to the new Google Ad Manager. I haven’t been using it for very long, but these are some of my thoughts on it so far:

Likes:

It was really easy to setup – From logging in, to getting the first ad to show up was a pretty simple process.

Pre-sale – Having the option of selling ads before they start their run is awesome. Now when somebody chooses not to renew, and that slot is available, we can sell it and have the creative ready to post on a future date and not have to worry about taking one down and putting another up.

Organization – Its been really difficult to keep our advertising organized, with so many advertisers coming and going for different lengths of times. Ad Manager looks like it will really help our organization, because run time is all set when we upload the creative, and is archived if we ever need to know how long an ad was up.

Trafficker access – I haven’t used this feature, but it looks like I can give access to advertisers to upload their own creatives, and view their stats. This could be a handy feature in the future.

Easy reporting features – It has some really good reporting features built in. Not sure we’ll do anything with these, but might come in handy.

Targeting – Ad Manager makes it really easy to set up some easy targeting features for ads by geographic location, browser, bandwidth or user domain. We don’t do any targeting on Shoemoney, but, for my other sites this will be a really nice option.

Dislikes:

Ads on multiple sites – I’m not sure if there is a better way of doing this, but what I ended up doing is just creating zones that were for a different site and exporting the html for those only. I kind of wish there was an option, that would separate out orders by site the ad will be displayed on. For now, what I’ve done isn’t a big deal because the 2 sites I’m putting ads on, have completely different advertisers. But if I had advertisers that were similar it would be a pain in the ass to figure out what ad was on what site. If Ad Manager does this, and I didn’t see it, somebody let me know.

Ad posting delay – It isn’t much of a delay, but it does take about 15 minutes for Ad Manager to start posting the ad on my site. This is kind of annoying, because I have to wait around to make sure its showing up.

Can’t post ad now (bug) – There is a weird bug, that when I create a new order, and have that order start today and end say a year from now. I create a line item in that order, and want to have the ad start posting today. It won’t let me save the line item unless I pick a future date. But, if I save it and go back into the line item, then I can click todays date, it will let me save. This has been a pain, because when I put up the ads, I want them up now, so I had to go back and change the date to today on each line item.

Overall, I’ve been really impressed with Ad Manager. I think the more we use it and the more accustomed to it, the better we’ll like it.

    Why ad manager over adsense?

  2. Goran Website

So which are the best ones to use for smaller traffic generating sites.

  3. Asia'h Epperson

I like OpenAds myself. It will be hard to switch to Google’s version. I myself don’t like to let Google know all the sites I have ads on…;)

Less is better, seems like a win-win situation here! The day is fast approaching when there won’t be a hard drive on your machine anymore. Everything is going to be web based. I mean one already has over 6GB of storage with gmail, and counting.

  5. Jared

I already applied for the beta, what is the most appealing is the fact that i woudl save so much server resources. Any idea on when they will open up to the public?

  6. Simon

To each his own I suppose. ;)

  7. Chetan

Will take months for me to have it used, as i am still not hitting big in the industry.

  8. cvos man

One downside (for you) is for those of us using FF adblock no ads show.

  9. ShoeMoney

    I already use google analytics so… ;)

  10. Patrick Allmond

Why not just use openx and keep all of the data to yourself? What benefit does this have over that ?

  11. Ashley

The Rubicon Project just launched their won version of this. Has anyone tried it?

  12. Hustle Strategy

will be nice when i become a heavy hitter…

  13. all2convert

yes, it could be exciting this Ad Manager tool, but i think that we find a lot of bugs there. I will sign it and test it for my sites. Will write my experience with this Ad tool!

  14. Flimjo

Yes, this post is clearly targeted to the heavy hitters.

Google’s reports come in handy for relaying and comparing of data for customers and general analysis, so this should also be handy in that sense. Saving on server space and other costs is also a bonus, but the big question that always begs to be asked of google is how secure one’s data is. Suppose we’ll all find out in due course, wont we!

  16. Ken Savage

switching over this afternoon. Hope it goes smooth.

  17. carl

I have only played with it so far but the real winner for me is the server resources I will be saving.

  18. Mike Baccarat

Does it take long to get accepted into google ad manager?

  19. Website Reviews

I look forward to using it as well! My only concern is this is one step closer to Google becoming self aware!

  20. Terry Tay

You never had the chance because it is new ;-) and by invite…but I’m in the same boat you are so not to worry lol

  21. Googlelady

They will be able to track anything with the ad manager in your site. Google make their products for one purpose “To get data from people + Sites”

  22. Googlelady

Thanks for the review about Google Ad Manager, it seems that is quite good but also I am sure that when the G ad manager is out of beta will be better than this. Let’s wait and see.

  23. Meethere

I hope they will not ban us using their manager.
That would be easy for google to track ad sellers :D

  24. J

I realize that the Shoemoney background is showing up for Dr. Teeth here and not at his other comment below, a bug maybe?

  25. Internet Business Blogger

Can anyone use this Google product? I tried to sign in worth my Google account but it errored and asked me if I had been invited.

Not sure if my 3000 visitors a day is really worth it anyway, Shoemoney you have a several visitors more than me.

  26. ShoeMoney

that assumption would be incorrect ;)

  27. Dr. Teeth

I think it sends invite only to persons getting more than 1 million of ad impressions per month on their sites.

  28. Dr. Teeth

I see its only on invitation basis.
I did not receive any invite in my adsense, but still i applied, lets see if i can get in!
    Thanks for the tip Jeremy

  29. bobventura

sounds very interesting. hopefully i’ll be able to use this more to my advantage as things shape up. thanks for the news.

  30. Mike1115

The Trafficker access sounds interesting. I’m very familiar with Dbclk’s DART adserver and a trafficker login just means that person has permission to traffic an ad. It’s very different than an Advertiser login, which gives access to campaign stats. I’d still would want to host the adserver though, since that data is no one’s business but my company’s and advertisers.

  31. Make Money Tlaks

I applied for “beta” account but still nothing, i hope to get access, this looks awesome!

  32. Not John

I have a small blog so, this is probably not useful to me yet. I think when I get to the point where I have enough traffic and interest, Google Ad Manager will make more sense.

  33. vowii

thanks for the review. looking forward to using ad manager in the future.

  34. CT Moore

The pros seem to outweigh the cons, and from my own experience with other Google products, that doesn’t really surprise. me. I’ll have to check AdManager out to see if it’s something I can use with clients.

I recently interviewed Avinash Kaushik, the Analytics Evangelist for Google, and he mentioned that he spends a lot of his time trying to improve the usability of various metric tools. I wonder if Ad Manager would fall under that jurisdiction.

If only this was posted prior to the interview, I would have asked him.

  35. Brent

Nice write up. I signed up for the program right away when I first read about it a while back on this blog – still haven’t gotten an invite though. One thing I am unclear on is whether or not Google handles payment processing when a spot is sold? I was expecting to see links under the ads leading to a Google Checkout page.

  36. ShoeMoney

From my perspective the value is pretty high. Its 1 less thing we have to update (server wise). 1 less thing that can be hacked (open source). 1 less point of failure. 1 less resource we have to maintain.

  37. Thiago Prado

I never had the chance to try google ad manager. maybe I’ll do that in the future.

  38. jardel

psst, after i posted the comment, long time “pagead2.googlesyndication” has been loading, i would say like… 4 seconds to everything (i mean, long time!)

  39. jardel

it makes me so excited, but I prefer to use a open source alternative, i’m the kind of guy that doesn’t want big corps owning my data, i don’t even use gmail anymore for that!

  40. Michael D

I was hoping to get included in the beta but haven’t had a chance to use it yet. Organization is super important to me since some advertisers come on for 3 months or less. Would like it smooth across multiple domains.

  41. CPA Affiliates

I am still undecided on google ad maanger. It has some perks etc.. i think if the improve like they have on their other products it will be great.
