Early last week we moved shoemoney.com from a shared (within our system) server to its own box. It was getting a bit overloaded on the old one. This blog has always kind of been just stuck somewhere with many other sites we have but its grown to the point it needs its own dedicated box. So now its on one. Once it was moved I upgraded wordpress to 2.5. Really easy upgrade no broken plugins or anything. As I said in a earlier post I was planning on redoing the comments so people had to register with the site and also taking away the threaded comments. I love brians threaded comments but when posts get over like 150-200 comments it has some issues. I think they are mostly client side browser issues but anyway my plan was to do away with it.
After the upgrade I did these things and it was about 2 minutes until someone made a comment I wanted to reply to… So it did not take long to re-enable brians threaded comments only this time I talked to dillsmack to see how hard it would be to remove the overhead I did not use and also enable Gravatar support. Dave h4xed out the collapse option and also moved the javascript to a external file. I enabled Gravatars… cool thats how I wanted it. I will work on formating a bit more but I can really tell a difference in speed on larger comment posts (150+). I also canned the idea of having people register to comment… maybe someday.
Btw if you have a default profile icon might want to get a Gravatar. Its linked through your email. I think it also ads a lot more authenticity to users commenting.
So overall impressions of 2.5… It took me a bit to get used to it. I was not so hot on the new admin navigation at first but I am liking it now. I wish the comment tab would default to show the ones awaiting moderation but its not that big of deal. Categories are more of a pain.. I used to like the old option of typing in. I guess I should start using tags instead of categories for most things. I have way to many categories.
Anyway I know a ton of Wordpress users use this site. Whats your impressions of 2.5?
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Took me a minute to get used too as well, but overall I love the new 2.5. Seems to be really intuitive, those guys really worked hard and did a great job!
Wordpress Thread Comment is a better plugin in my opinion
I love the new 2.5. Also haven’t ran into any bugs I’ve encoutered on old versions so definitely a keeper.
I am going to upgrade it this weekend!
better u stick to 2.3
I can’t believe they released WordPress 2.5 this soon. You can’t delete an image in the Media Library after you upload it. It’ll say it’s deleted, but if you look in the wp-content/uploads folder, it’s still there. You can’t delete tags once you create them… can’t delete categories either. It’s trash!
They need to fix it!
lol, 2.5 sucks in my opinion though few functionalities are good
I gave Gravatars a shot a few months ago. I like the general idea and believe they are being revived from an older released. The thing I didn’t like was that over half of my commentators didn’t have an account, so there were ALOT of blank faces. You have alot more reach, so maybe it will be different for you.
I think now that wordpress is using it, it will gain some ground… especially if people make plugins for forums and stuff like that for it.
Is WP 2.5 using Gravatar as a default?
yesh, gravatar is by default in 2.5
I like the 2.5 updgrade. It has acouple of glitches like moving back and forth betwen the Write and Manage tab. Also it doesn’t allow me to reorder modules on the Write page. And a few other minor items that wasn’t an issue in 2.3
The overall look, feel, and functionality is definitely a step in the right direction. I’ll give it 1.5 thumbs up.
When i first change, i also took me quite a while to get used to the new version.. In the first few days i hated it and even considered switching back, but now i think it has some pretty nice new features..
and also writing articles works faster.. i like wp 2.5
I love 2.5, especially the ability to upgrade plugins right in the plugin list. That’s slick and was overdue. Also like the new image and media upload interfaces. 1.9 thumbs up!
I think that is what a lot of people like about 2.5 including myself.
~Terry
Either commenting does not work for me, or the page does not show that its awaiting moderation…
workin on that… (showing waiting moderation part) welcome new commenter
I tried Brian’s threaded comments but didn’t like it that much - but I’m diggin’ the new 2.5. I didn’t upgrade right away, I did one blog and worked with it for a minute and then did the other one, so that I could get used to it a little at a time. I like it.
Yes, it took me awhile to get used with the menus and tabs. Overall, WordPress 2.5 is ok for me. all my plugins worked fine after the upgrade.
Just an observation or is this a bug, right after clicking the “Click here to cancel “reply”.”, the Comment box disappeared. Did you experience this too?
For a better admin console, try the Tiger Administration plugin, especially if you’re a mac lover!
I wrote mines on my blog (that i saw you recently visited
). I don’t like the admin panel either, so i installed a plugin called Fluency. It’s makes the admin layout super clean and easy to use.
Your blog very inspiring, anyone will getting more advantages from here . have a nice weekend
I’m still having trouble with the new media interfaces. At first, I couldn’t upload any files without getting an error. I then disabled a feature that would organize the media by date. It seems I can upload media now, but I can’t actually see them in Wordpress. Wordpress will indicate that 1 video is available, for example, but I can’t actually select it to put it into the blog. I’m going to have to go back to the wordpress forums, I guess. Other than this, however, I like wordpress 2.5 a lot.
I faced an issue with the ‘ Recent Posts’ plugin after a post on my blog hit the Digg front page (And yes,I am using 2.5 too ). So make sure you double check that.
Its better this way anyways, registering to post sucks!
ya I just wanted to do some really cool things like… allow users to upload banners and have them display as advertisements based on how much they contribute (comment) on the site. Just stuff like that. It would be easier to have people log in for that I guess we could always do both.
That will be a good idea Shoe!
cool! I wondered how to get the avatar. now to come up with a good one
Wordpress 2.5 is much better imo I don’t know how they will ever improve on this
I’m not sure if I have a Gravatar. I guess I’ll find out on this first comment…
Don’t get it. I do have a Gravatar, I just logged in, but it’s not showing up here?
This is not a rant or bashing, it’s a genuine question from someone who never paid much attention to the blogging world: why is it that Wordpress is used so much more than other systems for blogging?
Specifically, when it comes to having multiple blogs powered by the same system, Wordpress seems to be quite a pain, while Drupal makes it really easy, because you can have virtually infinite domains served by the same codebase with no hassle at all.
I tried to use Wordpress on a new blog I’m starting but I quickly gave up on it and headed back to Drupal.
I do realize that Drupal requires a bit more knowledge and work to set up with the same set of features that one gets from Wordpress with less work but is that the only reason for dumping a system which is (IMHO - and of course, I can be wrong) much more flexible?
Or is it that the folks that have dozens or hundreds of blogs don’t use Wordpress, nor Drupal and use something else instead?
Ive used almost every content management system known to man… used to be a huge postnuke/phpnuke person. Later used drupal for a bunch of stuff. I gotta say for a blog wordpress is easy and yet at the same time extreamly customizable.
As far as multiple installs… I take it you have not tried wordpress-MU ?
I have seen the Wordpress-MU site but I must confess I did not give it a try and completely forgot about it
I guess I’ll take it for a spin and give WP another shot
WordPress is just plain easy compared to other CMS’s. I tried Joomla and it just did nothing but confuse the crap out of me. I just couldn’t get the hang of it. WordPress is awesome.
I don’t like Joomla either - although not because I find it that hard to use but rather because it is very limited. I actually find it very confusing to develop for. But it certainly is not a simple tool.
I still find Drupal a better tool but I’m biased, since I’ve been using Drupal for years, develop websites using it and contribute to the project
I guess it’s the old story: each tool has its purpose and when there’s more than one tool for the same purpose, each person uses the one that fits his/her needs the best
I’ve used a lot of CMS’s too, and I HATE Joomla, but like Shoe have used Drupal quite a bit, and more in the past. I still appreciate Drupal but at the end of the day Wordpress is just simpler — simpler to use, simpler to train clients to use, simpler to develop for. I feel like Drupal’s community is talented but very disjointed — lots of half-finished module projects and lots of overlap. No offense, great community, but Wordpress’s community is a tighter (and smaller) ship, and that lets them develop more focused custom applications. Take what they’re doing with buddypress.org, for example.
As for multi-installs, I take it you have not tried extracting your own custom install scripts and svn’ing them?
I think WP2.5 is awesome! I love their admin. Even simpler. Definitely the top CMS I’ve had a chance to use.
Sounds like a good plan. Someday I’d like to have a url on it’s own rack and maybe multiple urls on their own like yourself.
I actually hate the threaded comments on a high-volume blog, like this one. Sure, it’s great if you just show up one time to read through a 150 comments in one sitting. It’s also fine for a blog that never gets more than 10 or 20 comments.
But if you’re following a blog post from the beginning, you basically have to start at the beginning each time you come back, looking for new threaded replies to older posts that you already read.
What does make sense, would be something like a click-to-quote feature and have it laid out more like a forum. That way, replies still make sense, because of the quoting, and you don’t have to backtrack to see what’s going on. It could be done with the same “Reply to this comment” link that’s already there, so people don’t have to manually quote.
If everyone used blockquote appropriately, there’d be no need for any plugin, but that won’t happen.
Plus, some sort of quote plugin would never need to do anything except for when someone use it. At that point, the post itself is just like any other post and just falls into the natural order, quote included.
Kinda like how nice it is to read through, or quote people, on a nice forum setup like vBulletin… when compared to dealing with forced threading on some crappier boards or mailing lists.
Hiya Mike. Must agree with you that things start getting really unwieldy the more accumulated posts there are, and checking back becomes a real pain. Something to ease this would be very handy indeed!
I just got the gravatar. Let’s see how this baby works.
I like the new 2.5 but it was very difficult at first to get used to it. But it is very very powerful. The upgrading was great, very easy as always.
I haven’t had problems with 2.5, but we’re changing the theme and custom coding a bunch of stuff on new sites. We’re testing this month so we’ll see how it goes.
2.5 looks and sounds great… I just keep thinking my plugins are gonna go belly up? just have to dive in I suppose… gravatar eh? I like it !
Well I found this baby “wordpress-automatic-upgrade-v1.1.zip”
How slick is this tool ? One touch upgrade and now all my plugins
can be upgraded with a “one touch” click instead of uploading
and then activating etc….
I know this is weird, but in almost all cases the new update/improvement leaves behind that one feature in the old that you must have to do without.
I liked the old template , where you could choose your categories right next to the post. Besides that, 2.5 is a breeze. While centering an image immediately following a para (which is aligned left) centers the entire post. 2.3 took care of that without messing it up.
But changes in 2.5 ar welcome.
Though they made lot of good changes, the previous admin panel was great.
Adding/removing widgets takes time now.
I too faced the same problem.
Everything was perfect except the widgets that caused full problems for me
I am a big fan of 2.5. I like the new changes and the new lay out of the dashboard (even if many dont). I also had no issues with plugins but I still have a few blogs to switch over, we will see!
You can still manually type in a category in 2.5 -
Click on “+ Add New Category” and type in the category name. If it already exists WP will automatically check it for you.
Your site loads so much faster now!
2.5 is also awesome, much easier to use and looks better overall.
What is plug-in wp upgrade do you use?
ок
It took a while to get used to the new admin interface, but it grows on you.
Definately seems worth changing over from Google’s Blogspot!
I’m hoping that the new AJAX editor will stop chewing up my HTML code and spitting it out. I’ve heard reports it will.
I’m generally very pleased with the 2.5 update.
Bugfixes they need to address include:
widgets that strip out the code if not saved “just so”. I liked the old widget bar that would preserve the code you had in it so you could test if a widget was giving you trouble. Now, you have to add the widget AND get the code that was in it if you take it down.
Also, the media library doesn’t work right. You can’t successfully download and correctly position an image from that window yet. I still have to go to the WYSIWYG window to put an image where it belongs.
Have been using WP since 2.0. This is the best yet.
I love the new version. The media add on options are great. Although the admin area obviously takes some getting used to.
Just upgraded to 2.5 and i loved it.
Wasn’t at all hard, but the widgets features are confusing as everything is changed there!
Anyways overall impression.. Superb
Media upload window doesn’t work properly in IE9. I use FireFox on one computer and haven’t switch from IE9 on the other and now I have the motivation to do so.
Yeah there were some pretty significant bugs in WP 2.5 that I found and had to fix for my clients. The main one had to do with media uploads. Images and what not were not loading into the system correctly depending on the host configuration. So I luckily found some patches and permission fixes to get it to work.

Otherwise, I dig the new layout and functionality. The one click plugin upgrade is hot. Works really nicely for my less tech savvy clients.
Just hope all my favorite plugins iron out their compatibility issues.
Yeah, I’m not so much a fan of the new admin panel. I think 2.3.3 was much more intuitive than this one. This is too “consolidated” for my tastes.
I’ve upgraded 4 blogs so far and the thing I enjoy the most is the 1-click update of plugins. That has really save me some time.
I upgraded all of my WP sites last week, only took a few minutes per site which is nice. The admin panel sure is different, it’s growing on me. The new media and gallery stuff is nice. All of the upgraded sites feel faster, obviously some nice changes to the code..
James
Upgraded to 2.5 a few weeks ago and it is not bad and looks nice.. I like the media support and some of the features.
However it seams a little slower to click around in ACP and also the widgets are not as user friendly. The way code is stripped from the widget when ever it is moved, where as on the old style, the code stayed in the widget, even if the widget was moved or saved in and out of the live side bar.
Thanks for the link to threaded comment plugin of Brians. Bookmarked that site and will add it to my blog soon
[...] Life After 2.5 Wordpress Upgrade [from shoemoney.com] [...]
Not that educated in WP but I can tell the difference in your site.
I agree. I think it is slower. Also, I do not consider moving menu items around as progress.
Shoe - you mention that this site was on a shared server with many of your other sites. I’ve read recently aboutyour MMA site, but what other web properties do you own? I’d be curious to see them as they pertain to many of your SEO and marketing tips. Is there a list of all your sites somewhere?
Agreed! Would love to see what you’re up to apart from this delightful blog, Shoe! The practical application of the knowledge shared and garnered from a blog like this is of huge interest to me. Please share an url or two.
[...] Reading: Shoemoney.com had a great review about “Life After 2.5 WordPress Upgrade“. He speaks about his threaded comments and a few changes they made to his comment plugin. [...]
I hate the new admin panel, and not only because I hate the watery colors. (Tried Fluency but couldn’t get it to work for some reason.) I don’t like having my entry editing screen crunched to the left side with the categories, tags and other stuff stuck at the bottom. Why didn’t they just use all that white space to the right of the screen… kind of like the old admin panel did.
It is cool. 2.5 is the best. It is more user friendly than 2.3.2 or 2.3.3. But I lost all my files why upgrading. That sucks
Anyone really saw a difference in Loading time with Wordpress 2.5? And how about server resources? Wordpress 2.5 is lighter as they mentioned it?
I just made the switch. It is taking some time to get used to it. But cant complain, it is a great CMS system.
I’ve upgraded to 2.5. also)
I used to it already. And I must confess it is a bit faster)
I’m still sitting on my hands and waiting before I upgrade to 2.5. I think there will either be bugs and security holes found. After an update I’ll look to upgrade.
2.3 was lot more better than this version.
No one likes change, but by 2.6 everyone will be happy
I still think how fast DOS was and how life was simpler back then… when kids could play in the streets without fear of being shot, when people said ‘hello’ face-to-face, when mom baked pies…. when men were men… and all that jazz!
Just getting used to wordpress after using blogger to get my intro to blogging. Tried to install WP on my server with the famous 5 minute install - 2 hours later still no go - longest 5 minutes I ever had ! May not like my Yahoo server as the special instructions provided pointed out. I followed them to the letter but still would not work. Gave up and went to wordpress.com to host my blog but kinda wish I had been able to get it going - just for the satisfaction that there was another thing I could do with my PC. Will try again when in the mood.
