Calacanis SESNY Special Keynote Surprise

by Jeremy Schoemaker on March 17, 2008 · 29 comments

I am hearing rumors of a big surprise for Jason Calacanis at the Search Engine Strategies keynote on weds that will make David Winers heckling of him seem like a fun time. Looks like I picked the wrong event to miss….

I just want to say for the record that I do not think its cool to heckle someone when they are speaking. I have had jackasses attempt to shake me up while speaking. Then when I am finished speaking they run for the door when we could have talked 1 on 1.

And for those 2,000 people emailing/instant messaging me about Jason calling me out at his keynote @affililate summit… I do not have a response. It was the 3rd keynote speech in a month where someone mentioned my blog at a major conference. How mad would you be?

I have said my peace to him privately about it and that is that.

I see a UFC style PayPerView event opportunity here. Put you all in a ring and duke it out until someone gets hurt. Good sponsor op for me. :P

Battle of the Internetz Geeks. You always said bad publicity is still publicity. Let CalANUS talk all he wants. All you get is people hurrying off to go check out your blog.

seems like Winer was right about calcanis pushing his own thing under the guise of a keynote. There is an art to doing a keynote that indirectly makes your stuff look good. Calcanis will never have a grasp of that kind of subtlety. Nothing like being heckled by one of the granddads of the internet. no matter how much he laughs about it you know it had to have impact on him. Go Winer!

I was the one who told this guy he was a jackass in person afterwords at his room.

See all of this is funny, you guys know it will only be time till someone either 1. Puts someone in the hospital, or 2. Someone dies.

With the amount of people who are “quiet” “peacefull” “seems nice” are the ones lately doing all these murders in the USA. How many college shootings last month? How many this month along with other wierd murder crimes. Its only long until these people keep pissing other off to a point where it becomes like the video games most of you play. I allready had to deal with the FBI because of some jackass that almost got very hurt at this last ASW because he decided to scam people out of thousands of dollars because his ways of making money were different then thiers……. Yall need to chill on the shittalking because if you cant do it face to face with the readyness to FIGHT till someone is NOT getting up, then shut the mouths. And all these people at these conferences only make up a small % of the real internet money makers…

It’s hard to take someone seriously when they are heckling at someone’s presentation. As far as Calacanis calling you guys out, all he did was challenge us all to think bigger. It was a great speech and an insight as to how the rest of the internet space thinks about the affiliate marketing industry.

What’s so bad about Jason? He’s doing a good job and he’s trying to show people to aim higher, I don’t see any problem with that…

What he said about Shoe may have been harsh, but it was true in a sense and I think when he makes a speech about the internet’s issues, mahalo is bound to come up since that is what his solution is to the problem…

give the guy a break, he’s just doing what he loves and he’s not prepared to let people walk all over him….

I never knew heckling even happened at these types of things. I thought heckling was reserved for comedians, athletes, and the occassional politician. I guess speaking events are a bit more wild than I thought. :-P

Jason is good at marketing himself- like when he called SEO’s scam artists, now did the same thing (although more subtle) at Affiliate Summit. I’m sure he’ll try and do the same at SES today- he does have some occasional good points, but it all comes off more like marketing (stirring the pot). But his tactics are now seeming dated…

What was the big surprise? I was at the keynote and didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary.

It looks like the only surprise was when Jason announced he’s a White Hat SEO :)

Please fill me in on this incident at the last ASW, because nobody at the Rio Hotel knows anything about it, nor anybody on the Affiliate Summit staff.
