This is kind of funny but we have quite a algorythem as to what comments go into que.. what are blacklisted (go straight to trash) and what are always displayed.
First of all… if you have a url in your comment I guess its ok… but it will always be moderated. Also you look like a complete jackass spamming your site in your comment (just my opinion). Also these links serve no seo value as they are all no follow.
Swear words are always moderated. I do not censor people but I want to see them before they are posted.
There are a bunch of other catch words for moderation… Spammers are getting smarter and you see them put in 1 comment only to spam the crap out of your blog following that first approved comment.
If you comment from a TOR or proxy ip it will always get caught in moderation. It does not mean it is deleted… it just needs approval. I would say 99% of anonymous ips are trolls or spam.
I should probably make a official comment information thing that pops up when your comment goes into moderation…..

Is the algo available for the public? Or just tuned for your own blog?
March 10, 2008 at 5:33 pm
Shoe: Doesn’t anyone have a post on comment etiquette? The URL dropping makes me crazy. I’m tempted to do a “how to be a comment douchebag” post but don’t want to give anyone free press.
All the best with the upcoming Elite Retreat!
March 10, 2008 at 5:35 pm
I agree, it’s really annoying. You’re already given a link with your name, if someone really wants to visit your site they will click it that way!
March 10, 2008 at 5:38 pm
I agree about the URL comment moderation thing. In fact was having so much trouble with URL spammers on a forum that I insisted on a number of comments (eg 4 or 10) before the URL was autolinked. Could something similar be done in Wordpress (eg someone has to make x comments before their URLs are linked (before that it just displays them as plain text)?
March 10, 2008 at 5:41 pm
yes, your right ! even in my blog i have problem with spammers, a lot of comments without sens, just crap !
March 10, 2008 at 6:20 pm
lol i can see alot of people running up comment counts just to get on that top commentators list on the left side there!
March 10, 2008 at 6:22 pm
i meant the right side… hehehe just playin with ya.
March 10, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Is there a specific plug in you use for this, or is it something you have coded? I have a blog that is constantly getting spamed, most of the spam goes into moderation, but I would love for it to just get discarded.
March 10, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Yea, I see a few comments that look like they are trying to get that first comment just so they can spam the rest. So far none have gotten through.
March 10, 2008 at 8:15 pm
.. i just imagine 20 years from now on how spammers will look like…
March 10, 2008 at 8:26 pm
I’ve seen your filter in use for a while now.
And to be honest, I like it. I’ve often posted, seen the comment vaporize, then ask – OK, what phrase did I use this time.. Its actually helpful to know when your choice of phraseology starts aligning with spam, and your blog is popular enough to warrant some efficiencies in that regard (the basic logic being, I can expect to see the same elsewhere).
The main reason I don’t mind seeing my comments disappear , and continue to comment, is because it reminds me that my comments are actively moderated, and they don’t get tossed with the bathwater.. I’m a fervent supporter of non censorship in a community context. It’s the only way to communicate effectively – AND the basic principle behind what made your blog popular in the first place (ie open book approach like your 10K experiments etc).
I don’t know I’d call it an algo, but just the same, it’s effective, though I do wonder – how much time do you (or delegate) spend administering your blog ?
PS: How about a post on administering your blog.. I mean, you admin from all over the place, find time to not only post, but approve comments etc, you must be using some choice software to do that..
Cheers,
JL

I’m sure that could be done or something similar. I think the link moderation works just as good. You could set it so all links inside the comment text area are moderated, or it can be if there are 2, 3, 4 links etc. Most people that visit a blog know the name will link to the sites anyways, so what’s the point of putting it within the comment as well? If I see an interesting comment I’ll sometimes check out the person’s site by clicking their name. They don’t need to advertise it in their comment.

March 10, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Agreed. No need for someone to include a link in their comment. The name with the embedded link is enough. Some people are just desperate.
March 10, 2008 at 10:49 pm
I’m just not popular enough yet to have to moderate spam. The good with the bad… So, did a bunch of people submit comments that failed the test, just to mess with you? I’m thinking April Fools now…
March 11, 2008 at 12:45 am
this seems like a nice algorhitm. Why not release it to the public?
March 11, 2008 at 1:17 am
make a post about how to make money!
March 11, 2008 at 3:24 am
They probably look 20 years older
March 11, 2008 at 9:36 am
Click on the (?) next to the top commentators box for the code.
March 11, 2008 at 9:54 am
moderating comments seems like a full time job. good thing for software to assist otherwise having comments wouldn’t be worth it
March 11, 2008 at 9:56 am
without spammers i’d have no comments
– guess i need to work on it
March 11, 2008 at 10:04 am
That is what happens when individuals want your traffic and clicks! I am now starting to see the spam posts on my site. (I guess that’s a sign of success; I don’t know.)Shoe, if you decide to sell your code to fight spam, I’m sure there would be those interested in buying it!
March 11, 2008 at 11:06 am
I think you have to publish a comment policy that says that’s frowned upon because there are a lot of people who just don’t know. they think of comments like email and it’s no big deal to have a url in the sig of your email. i’m not saying il ike it, just saying i understand why ppl do it.
March 11, 2008 at 11:26 am
…Just don’t put a link to it in the comments!
March 11, 2008 at 11:28 am
You make more money when not wasting time killing spam…
March 11, 2008 at 11:30 am
Shoe – I think that you have been very fair. Most major blogs outside of you and John, don’t have commentors Blogrole, but you two have been kind to give small blogs a chance to get noticed…I just hope no one “kills the Golden Goose”
March 11, 2008 at 1:22 pm
There’s plenty here on Shoemoney’s blog to teach you how to do that, just spend some time reading.
March 11, 2008 at 1:27 pm
“GREAT INFORMATION!” Those are some of the vague posts we receive on ours. It’s quite annoying.
At least when a user shows that have read the article even a little bit, we are more apt to approve a comment that has a little substance.
March 11, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Yea, regulating comments becomes a venture unto itself. You want comments, because that encourages people to remain loyal to your blog. But then you have to deal with spammers, desperate people, etc.
March 11, 2008 at 2:33 pm
how about sharing the plugin or algo with the rest of us?
not begging so much as to find some way of relieving the number of BS comments I get per day. 80+ and usually over 100. Only about 30 are worth the time to approve.
March 11, 2008 at 4:47 pm
I’m just happy to know what the rules are! On another blog I got flagged as spam for commenting on something like five posts in a day and they never did unflag me… personally, I like it when new readers go through my old posts all at once, I think it means that they are excited about finding me and getting really involved and that’s the kind of readers I want, right?
March 11, 2008 at 5:26 pm
I guess, it is best option to moderatore most of the comments even there are pretty much of them. Spamming blogs are pretty popular nowadays.
Maybe somehow making a registration system, which you need to login to site to comment can eliminate some of those spams.
March 11, 2008 at 5:41 pm
I definitely think the algorithm is a good idea to help weed out spam but also letting a lot of “safe” posts get through to minimize the time you have to spend moderating comments.
March 11, 2008 at 7:55 pm
Every one can use it. LOL
March 11, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Well well! Those people should change their ways of commenting.
March 11, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Should I post a link……
March 11, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Aren’t you using Akismet? 25 to 30% approval rate makes it seem like you must not be.
March 11, 2008 at 8:43 pm
What;s the catch..
March 12, 2008 at 2:50 am
creative post … i have a similar issue but ofcourse i don’t get as many comments as this blog. I do tend to edit some comments like remove links if the comment seems thoughtful.
March 12, 2008 at 2:56 am
i think it is just a guide to tell the scammers its not going to work here …
March 12, 2008 at 2:57 am
i think it is much easier to keep a blog on a smaller scale easy to manage but blogs that recieve huge traffic i think it can get out of control.
March 12, 2008 at 2:58 am
haha good one..
March 12, 2008 at 8:27 am
Akismet and WP Captcha Free. They’re real comments as far as i can see. It’s just that they either don’t pertain to the post or they’re 1 or 2 word responses.
I need a monkey between comment moderation and me to filter out all the BS.
March 12, 2008 at 10:21 am
My comments always seem to go in moderator, you don’t approve them all either. But thats cool
. Sorry about not being able to send you a messaGE about your shirt. Your “contact me” thing was broken!!!!
Anyways good to know shoe, and I liked the recent video you put up.
PS.
Google is not all powerful, to say so is giving them more power, they keep slipping traffic wise, but do have a semi-relevant Algo. LOL.
March 12, 2008 at 12:17 pm
With the amount of traffic this blog receives I am sure that you get your share of spam. I think it is pretty stupid to visit a blog just for the link back. It is like working out and doing it half A$$. You get nothing out of it. Some peoples kids!!!
March 12, 2008 at 9:55 pm
I agree…unless you have a post entirely relevant to the post you are commenting on…something that will answer other commenters questions, etc. And what about linking to another relevant website seperate from your site. I think URLS in comments are acceptable in certain situations.
March 12, 2008 at 9:58 pm
I have a personal pet peeve for when people put a spammy phrase as their “name” in comments. I’d much rather see a comment on my blog with the commenters name listed clearly, so that if I want to address them, I can do it personally.
March 13, 2008 at 12:25 am
I experienced spamming in my blog, so I always moderate the incoming comment after that
March 13, 2008 at 3:14 am
I, too, have moderation enforced but only for comments containing links. It’s not a common way of commenting, but I’m experiencing lots of spam lately.
March 13, 2008 at 7:27 am
hope my comment didn’t get caught he he
March 13, 2008 at 9:14 pm
When I just started my blog and was new to everything, I had no idea that a link in the comments was frowned upon. If they add value it’s one thing, but most are blatant promotion attempts. I don’t leave links in comments anymore at all now though. Just playing it safe… don’t want to offend…
March 14, 2008 at 12:52 am
Or 30 because they’ve had the crap beaten out of them 20 times
