Crunchies 2007 Award Show Recap

by Jeremy Schoemaker on January 27, 2008 · 27 comments

I made a quick post when I got back to my hotel room but I wanted to write up a little more about the Crunchies. First if you don’t know its a awards show put on my Techcrunch, Gigaom, Read/writeweb and Venture Beat.

So I already had 2 tickets to the event (purchased) before I got my press pass. I was going to go with Greg Hartnett (of BOTW fame). When I received my press pass I told Greg we needed to find another person to come with us. He said Brent Csutoras was local and I was gonna try to give him a buzz… worked out well we met up for some amazing Asian food in china town then headed to the awards.

I have got a lot of emails and questions about what some of the these guys were like in person. Being I was part of the press core and got to sit down with them in a special section it was cool to get face time with a chunk of them during the awards show and also after to the press only q&a /photo event. I dunno that I have that great of information but I will share what I remember ;) .

Kevin Rose (founder of digg/pownce) is a really nice laid back dude. I asked him a few questions about pownce… mostly fluff I don’t even remember (what a good press person I am). What I do remember is he had some dildo next to him that kept telling him how Steve Jobs would answer the questions I was asking him.. seriously he was REALLY annoying. I thanked Kevin for his time, snapped a picture with him, and said I would talk to him later after the show.

Mark Zuckerberg (facbook founder/ceo) Mark was surprisingly very feminine acting. I had only seen him during a few on line presentations and his recent stint on 60 minutes. I approached Mark briefly before the ceremony and introduced myself. He was a really nice kid and asked what I did. I said something like Ohhh I write a blog, which you guys sponsor for facebook ads, and it gets some decent readership in the online advertising space. I never did mention the site, I figured he would have never heard of it anyway. Another thing that was kind of odd was he had a young Asian girl with him that he turned to before answering any question and sometimes she would even nudge him in a way to correct what he was saying. I am not sure if this was his agent, publicist, or just his girlfriend but it was interesting.

I ran into MC Hammer again and he immediately recognized me and was like SHOEMONEY you are the one talking smack in your previous post. Caught me off guard a bit hehehe. Just weird having one of your child hood idols call you out like that. I am still not sure if he was joking or not cause I really did not say anything bad… only that I challenged him to a dance contest and he did not accept (or something like that). I lightened it up a bit and told him to have his people call my people and we would talk. BTW I am a big fan of his new startup dancejam. Check it out if you haven’t. Its pretty interesting. Greg and Brent talked to him quite a bit while I mingled.

Pete Cashmore the editor/founder of Mashable.com It was nice to finally meet Pete. He gave me a little bit of crap and I gave it right back. I like him. He is pretty aggressive and in your face. He reminds me of a Scottish version of David Nalylor.

Matt Mullenweg – I can’t see how anyone who has ever met Matt in person could have a bad thing to say about him. He is a super nice kid. When he received the award for most likely to succeed it had an amazing amount of roars from the audience. I would say he is the golden child of silicon valley. I have been talking with Matt recently about attending the Elite Retreat. A official announcement will happen when we get everything nailed down.

I have been wanting to meet Duncan Riley for quite some time. Duncan is my favorite Techcrunch writer and I think he does a really good job editorially covering the tech industry.

I really did not say to much to Michael Arrington other then thanking him for the press pass and congratulating him on a great event. Michael is always swamped (as you can imagine). Arrington is a frickin pimp of the highest degree and I look forward to hanging out with him a bit more when he is not so overwhelmed.

Ok on to the show…. The highlight of the night for me was when Apple won the award for best gadget (Iphone) and they had Steve Jobs accepting the award via satellite:

Ok obviously that was not the real Steve Jobs but the Fake Steve Jobs

There were other really funny skits… Check out the official site for all the winners and if you want to you can even watch the whole show replay.

Zuckerberg in general creeps me out. Did you ever read the leaked lawsuit documents as to the story on how facebook was created? He used to have a sort of online journal/blog in which he wrote about how it would be fun to rate ugly people next to eachother. This idea eventually evolved into what facebook is today.

I somehow expected Cashmore to be an aggressive guy. You have to be aggresive in order to write a 5000 master item list of 500 tools to do 432543 things :D

Mashable >stays< in my RSS reader :D

@ Cifra

I agree with you. Your kind of thinking impressed me. I think it will be possible that in future you can regard more than you tink of.

wow. That detail i was very unaware of. When i first started using Facebook I called it stalkernet…i actually was stalked by this guy that lived in the building next to me. He found out which floor I lived on, and would look out the window at me. and then tell me he saw me. I’ve since grown to Facebook, but it was NOT a good first impression.

Mark Zuckerberg is overrated. He’s gone too corporate.

Erica. I was a bit kinder in my recollection, I went back and re-read the documents and this is what he said.

“I’m a little intoxicated, not gonna lie. So what if it’s not even 10pm and it’s a Tuesday night? What? The Kirkland facebook is open on my computer desktop and some of these people have pretty horrendous facebook pics. I almost want to put some of these faces next to pictures of farm animals and have people vote on which is more attractive.”

You can find all the files here: http://www.02138mag.com/magazine/article/1764.html

My other favorite part is when he admitted they outed one of their founders because he had a drug (cocaine?) problem.

Mark needs to stay behind the scenes. That 60-minutes interview was dead proof. There is either something missing or something wrong with the boy.

I am not a hater. Give me a billion and I am corporate or whatever. And I agree he is overrated. I have not studied facebook to see why it was the one that succeeded, but there are hundreds of social sites that do almost the exact same thing.

Total social ineptitude is a common trait among talented programmers. Smart boys get their answers from Asian girls. Dude should sell his company and release some of the Palo Alto minions from the endless grind of 80 hour weeks. How would I know? LOL

MC Hammer can’t touch Shoemoney :P
And about the others…Well, some were ok, But others were a bit nerdy.
I keep my fingers crossed to see Shoemoney doing an interview with the real Steve Jobs or even Gates himself.
Now that would be something!
