ShoeMoney Q & A Round 4

By Jeremy Schoemaker 70 comments

Nick Sullivan asks:

When was the first time you actually made a nice profit Online. Like not the first time you made a dollar, the first time you made your real sum?

ShoeMoney: I first started making really good money by buying recycled computers and reselling them on eBay. It was one of the first posts I ever made.

Ken Savage asks:

Yoo Jeremy, can you report on how BlogRush is doing for you? Do you keep it up because Reese is a friend or is it bringing you some targeted traffic?

ShoeMoney: I still really like BlogRush and I am in it for the long haul. I still find its brings in more new visitors that convert to RSS subscribers/returning visitors then any other widget. But as you said John Reese is a good friend of mine and because of that I also know what is in store for it.

joe asks:

What is your fav fast food?

ShoeMoney: KFC 3 piece meal with 2 potatoes. I do it once a week. Damn you Coloniel Sanders!

Dan Schawbel asks:

What do you think of Mahalo and Wiki Search relative to Google?

ShoeMoney: Well I do not think either will ever be a threat to Google. However I do think Mahalo is looking better all the time and they are starting to pickup some great rankings in the search engine. I would say Mahalo has passed about.com and gaining on wikipedia pretty fast.

corey asks:

do you think sphinn will take the bait every time you put it out there? seemed pretty successful. could you guess how many new readers you got last week from that alone?

ShoeMoney: I did a post about traffic from widgets once and also recently a post about the circle jerk of sites like sphinn that never really get outside there own circle. I run the widget mostly because I think Danny Sullivan is a great guy. As far as baiting them… The SEO crowd historically is pretty easy to bait even if you are not trying.

RacerX asks:

New blog or site $1000, best way to invest it

ShoeMoney: I would not put any money into a blog to start… just start writing. If you want to build a site buy some books and learn how to do whatever it is you want to do.

Mark asks:

I can write and I have computer skills. I like gadgets. I know a little about SEO. I want to get started making money on line, but the amount of information out there is overwhelming. I have a real job, and will only do this 2 hours per day to start. Since I have a real job, I can spend $1000 to get going.

What do you recommend?

ShoeMoney: I am puzzled why you need money to start this. Get a blogger blog for free and start writing. You don’t need to know anything about SEO or what you do need to know you can learn in about 15 minutes. Just know its not going to happen overnight.

Nick Sullivan asks:

When you have a limited or not particularly big amount of money. It can seem daunting putting almost everything you have into start-up for a new idea.

What are your views on small start-ups would you recommend a person put small amounts into something and slowly release something or just shove everything they have into something and push it as hard as they can. If they truly believe in it?

ShoeMoney: If you truly believe in something then go balls out. If you do not believe in your product how do you expect anyone else will?

Max asks:

What is on your dream landing page and what does its layout look like?

ShoeMoney: Whatever one converts the best. Its going to look different depending on what you are promoting. When we start a new campaign I always have 10 different versions made and rotate them to see what one converts the best. As far as layout - Generally main products at the top and Adsense at the bottom.

jamescoops asks:

What is a typical RPM / EPM for a site focused on mobile / ringtones e.g. what sort of cash is typical off 1000 page views for that kind of site?

ShoeMoney: I dunno what rpm epm means! It really depends on the quality of traffic. Some crap search network may deliver .20 epc where as organic traffic could be as high as 4$ epc

simon asks:

what happened to clickshield.com ?
is it still available and if not, how do you fight PPC click fraud ?

ShoeMoney: clickshield is still alive and still a in-house product of shoemoney media. We have licensed the technology to a few people in the past and I am not sure if we will ever make a full blown site/service. I doubt it. We do not do much of click fraud prevention… click shield is more about getting your invalid clicks refunded.

Search◊ Engines Web asks:

Please share your traffic stats?

As a top technorati 100 blogger -
it would really be great if you could make your blog traffic stats public

ShoeMoney: already done here

iantrepreneur asks:

will you be attending affiliate summit west 2008?

ShoeMoney: no

Luke asks:

I’m sure you get this all the time but - what’s the best way for a (relatively) new blog to make money? I’ve had $5 days on AdSense but, naturally, I want to up that amount routinely. Any suggestions?

ShoeMoney: have good content

Larry Weaver asks:

Where and when is HDNet’s “Inside MMA” recorded? And when is the first M-1 Global show?

ShoeMoney: I tivo inside mma so i dunno when it is recorded live. I think the first M-1 show will be in Chicago this Summer/Fall

Davide Di Cillo asks:

how many keywords do you consider enough for a long tail strategy on PPC targeting landing pages?

ShoeMoney: As many we can generate that turn into conversions.

Paul C Porter asks:

What methods do you use for tracking your conversions on PPC, such as sub-id, conversion codes with the internal engine or your own web beacon pixels, and what systems do you use to measure the progress, such as manually downloading the sub id reports, using a soap systems, or a custom system?

ShoeMoney: just subids. You can really dial it in with pixels but for me its a more of a volume game.

Alex asks:

What three things have you learned and/or changed over the past couple years that have made the most significant impact on your earnings and your business growth?

ShoeMoney: reading thedip by Seth Godin had a pretty big impact on me, Building, running and selling AuctionAds was quite an experience,

Chris Jacobson asks:

Why do you still wear your glasses even though you had eye surgery?

ShoeMoney: I have not worn glasses since I had surgery. This question seems to come up a lot because of the pictures on the free shirt friday. Because we have hundreds of shirts sent to us we do them in big batches. I think we have about 10 left before the ones with glasses will be used up.

Dexter : Techathand.net asks:

do ” A ” lister blogger like you still blog hop..or you get most of your news to heads up. if you are blog hoping any tips for your reader

ShoeMoney: I try to keep a blog and not a news site. This site has always just been kind of my thoughts. I know it makes a lot of “how to make money” lists and tips but that is just a coincidence.

Mick asks:

Ok mate how do you stop website hijacking/url/scrapers/stealers/bots. etc etc.
What is your defence and ways so to speak.
Would not mind you write up a “topic starter” on the subject with all your knowledge.
regards.

ShoeMoney: I dont try to stop them

Michael Streko asks:

If you were building a tree fort; what would you use all wood or all metal & why?

ShoeMoney: I would probably go with stainless steel. I know metalworking/welding much better then woodworking or carpentry. My first skateboard ramp was a stainless steel ramp I welded together with my dad.

joe asks:

how can you find out if an advertiser is ripping you off your commissions?

ShoeMoney: Rotate it with the same offer on another network and compare results.

Bernard Griffiths asks:

What do you do when a campaign simply dies on you when promoting it via PPC? I find that on a few campaigns I run, they will go great for like 4-5 weeks, and then one day conversions stop. I’ll go back and revise the campaign but still continues to convert poorly. How do you keep a campaign from not dieing out when you know it has plenty of potential?

ShoeMoney: I try not to keep a campaign from dying. Pigs get slaughtered. There are plenty of fish in the sea. Don’t eat yellow snow.

ian asks:

similar to a question asked above, I would like to ask if you started to see serious success online before or after you started to lose weight.

ShoeMoney: My success can be traced back to the day I met my wife. You take a brilliant marketing mind and apply some discipline and work ethic and magic things happen.

Dave asks:

What is your favorite submission hold? Not to see on tv, but to actually catch someone with in practice. Which Sub is your Bread and Butter?

ShoeMoney: triangle choke

Barry asks:

What websites do you look at for fun? Do you waste any time on webcomics? bash.org? digg? storg.net?

Korak asks:

What are you doing it all for? I mean, money is great, but what is the end game you envision for you and your family when you are 70 and contemplating how you spent your life? Going to go the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation route?

ShoeMoney: I have no idea. I am just happy I can make a living doing what I enjoy.

rb from the rb post asks:

Where is your favorite place to blog? And do you find it easier to blog around people (like at a coffee shop) or in the privacy of your own place?

ShoeMoney: I love writing on planes. Its the one place I can’t be interrupted by my phone, email, or instant messangers

Eliot asks:

I’m launching a site soon and want to make some big waves. How do you get online and offline media to give your new sites coverage?

ShoeMoney: Hitting the front page of digg.com is the #1 way I have gotten big press to notice my blog.

ShoeMoney: Answer

Martin Jones asks:

If you were just starting out in the affiliate game and could only use one book, one website and one application to get started…What would you use?

ShoeMoney: hmm I can’t think of a book off hand for affiliate stuff… forums.digitalpoint.com affiliate section is the site and the application would be dreamweaver.

Larby asks:

Whats the best way to get low inital min cpc costs on adwords?

ShoeMoney: have a good quality score (i know duh)

Fiscal Musings asks:

With all the businesses and websites that you run and everything else that you do, I’d like to know what you view as your greatest accomplishment to date. Thanks…

ShoeMoney: I would say the greatest accomplishment was deciding to move in with a friend and sleep on his couch for 6 months and work my way up the corporate ladder rather then move back in with my parents and take the easy road. This was back in my mid 20’s and it was a really hard road but it taught me a lot of self worth.

Purposeinc asks:

If I could snap my fingers, and you could have anything you wanted, anything at all, what would it be?

:)

ShoeMoney: 100 more wishes

WebTrix asks:

What blogs do your read when you’re educating yourself?
Can I get a free Shoemoney Shirt ?

ShoeMoney: I read johnchow, problogger, copyblogger, seomoz, seobook, davidnaylor. Yes you can have a free t-shirt just come to any search conference I am at and ask for one.

Sam I Am asks:

How much time do you get for work seeing as you have a young kid about the same age as mine? I know I should cut back more on work sometimes, but it’s darn tough at the same time…

ShoeMoney: I work 8 hours a day most days and some hours at night.

Georgie asks:

Do you really think you’re going hit it big with the MMA sites or is it a case of working on what you want to work on and not what will make the most money? For example, what’s the revenue model of these sites? Just ads?

ShoeMoney: Well I do not expect to fail! Revenue model will come with users. We already have some direct sponsors on board. The monthly site costs will already be in the green the first month out.

Dave asks:

What do you think of higher end coaching programs like stompernet for advancing your skills quickly? Do you think as long as you get a positive ROI then it’s all good or do you think there is a limit that you should be willing to pay for any knowledge. I believe stompernet is 797/month.

ShoeMoney: I have heard great things about stompernet. I have a neighbor who went through the program and it really changed his life. Like anything though its not a get rich overnight thing. Its going to take some hard work. I think its great for those people that already have some success but have come to a wall. I would not recommend it to people just looking to get started in this “making money online business”

Cindy asks:

What are your thoughts on PayPerPlay?

ShoeMoney:

Debby asks:

Jeremy,

Since hindsight is 20/20… What is a mistake that you made in the beginning of affiliate marketing? How would you do it over again if you had the opportunity?

Thanks,
Debby

ShoeMoney: I wish I would have gotten dialed into PPC earlier.

Cyrus asks:

Hi Jeremy, If you had to take a guess as to where Affiliate marketing is going to be in 5 years what would your answer be? What about 10 years?

ShoeMoney: I hope it continues to have more tools for the search marketer and not just the email spammers

Adam asks:

With your business successes, have you ever considered moving out of Nebraska?
Does your wife ever get jealous of you taking pictures with all those other women? (zivity model, for example)
Aside from writing articles, how would you market/advertise or in general attract traffic to your sites without spending money?

ShoeMoney: Sure I have considered moving out of Nebraska. Financially it just does not make much sense at this point.

My wife? Jealous? lol.

MacBook Air asks:

What can we expect from the new showmoney book being released in Spring…. tease us with some details shoe…

ShoeMoney: It will make all your dreams come true.

Gary Jones :: BlueFur.com asks:

How is your server setup done and do you use a failover system?

ShoeMoney: load balancers for the web front end and redundant mysql servers for db. Currently we do not have anything really worthy of failover but hopefully that will change soon.

entertainment news asks:

Any more little Shoe’s in the near future??

ShoeMoney: One on the way now (15 weeks prenant). That will be it.

MochaProductions asks:

My only question is, when are you planning to visit Montreal?

ShoeMoney: Hmm there is a ufc event there soon. Probably then.

Paul asks:

Shoe,

I always found your webmaster radio shows very informative and well produced. I have two questions with regard to the show:

1) What kind of technical setup did you use to record those shows (Skype, mixer, etc)?
2) How long was it before you started selling ads for the show, and how lucrative was the ad revenue?

Thanks,

Paul

ShoeMoney: I just call in its all done by webmaster radio. I dunno anything about the revenue from ads I do it for free.

Jack Rack asks:

How do you decide what attack posts to respond to in the form of a post on your blog?

ShoeMoney: What I do is put them all into 1 document, print it out, then careful cut each out placing them all in a bowl. Then I have my lovely assistant draw one of them out of the bowl and write about that person….. Seriously though their is nothing at this time officially in the shoemoney handbook for choosing which shoemoney sucks posts to respond to.

NuBody Supplements asks:

How do you make market your affiliate program, I know a lot of people are afraid of not being paid by a company, but how do you get your name out there w/o having to join an affiliate network?

ShoeMoney: I have no clue what your question is.

Andy asks:

I won a prize here a couple of months ago - in the contest you ran as a part of your RSS war with John Chow. The prize was a copy of PPCRiches, worth $297.

I had a bad experience with this contest - in the sense that, despite repeated requests directly to you, the prize never actually turned up.

So, the two questions I have are:

1) Can I have my prize please; and
2) Given the difficulties, would you recommend to other bloggers considering running contests that they make sure they have all the prizes physically in their possession before they offer them in an actual contest.

ShoeMoney: Interesting. I have nothing in my inbox matching your name or email… please sure the contact form with your information. All winners were given to the sponsors and this is the first I had heard of it.

I would highly recommend contests if you have the creativity and resources for doing them.

Jack asks:

I have been doing affiliate marketing for several years as a sole proprietorship. Do you recommend forming an LLC or S-Corp in order to protect my assets? Which form do you find most advantageous to you and why?

ShoeMoney: We currently have both s-class corps and llc’s. I am not sure why. Our lawyers and attorneys set them up

Jimbean asks:

just curious your thoughts on incredibill? He seems to like to take shots at you.

ShoeMoney: Its the in thing to take shots at me ;) Its just part of the gig.

Popular Wealth asks:

I’ve got an idea for a new company that would likely give adsense a run for their money. It’s unique but I don’t have the time or resources to make it reality, you have the background and resources. Would you be interested in hearing this idea, and willing to pay me a nominal (aka very small) fee if you like the idea enough to give it a go?

ShoeMoney: Probably not. We have non competes in place from previous company sales which forbid us to have much of anything to do with a advertising network.

Gary R. Hess asks:

If I remember correctly you live in Omaha or near it which is KC Royals territory, are you a fan of the boys in blue?

Also, since that is off-topic I’ll shoot off another:
What is the biggest tip you can give someone who is just starting out in the web business with little to no money?

ShoeMoney: I am actually a cubs fan. Probably the best advice I can give someone who wants to start in this business is to not start. 99% of people trying to make money online will fail.

Ferrarislave asks:

I’m not going to bore you with money/success questions. I’m going to ask about your computer. Why do you use Apple and what are some of your favorite Apple features and programs (do you use OSX leopard?). Also, how do you like those 30″ Cinema Displays. Do you dual boot any other OS’s (Debian, Ubuntu, etc..)?

ShoeMoney: I love MacOSX Leopard. The 30″ monitors are pretty awesome. I have windows XP pro on my laptop and we use debian on our servers.

Jamie Farmer asks:

SM how do you say you are not a SEO? You won several SEO contests and by looking at the structures on your other sites you obviously understand the ins and outs of SEO and you rank tops for some of the most competitive keywords. WTF is the deal?

ShoeMoney: I dunno. The SEO subject has taken up enough of my resources this week.

How To Rule The World asks:

i have noticed that you have no social profiles, or at least no active ones on sites such as stumbleupon, mybloglog, and sphinn. Does this mean that you do not think social media marketing is necessary to grow a blog? If so what other means of creating buzz about your blog would you advise. And you cant say search engine keyword optimization, because you made it clear a few posts ago that you are not SEO.

ShoeMoney: Right hand side down a little on this page.

Tom asks:

I’m curious on how you see search engine algorithms changing in the next 5-10 years?

ShoeMoney: I wrote a couple years ago about how the right mix of algorithm + social voting + human editing would be the ultimate answer. I think Google is well on the path.

yebot asks:

Can I have a cookie?

ShoeMoney: Check your cookies I dropped some for you.

Collin LaHay asks:

When will you be opening/launching fighters.com?

ShoeMoney: Its scheduled for q1 of this year. I wanted to open it by Feb 2nd for ufc81 but not sure if we will make that. Phase 1 should be sometime around there though. It will be a soft launch at first. We are just now hiring writers and stuff.

Adergaard asks:

How would you monetize a 3,000 uniques a day, 25,000 pageviews/day flash site that for obvious reasons doesn’t do well with Google adsense?

ShoeMoney: no clue without knowing more about the site.

Adam asks:

What was your trick to beating John Chow in the last hours of the RSS subscriber contest?

ShoeMoney: That was so 3 months ago… I already forgot!

    Congratulations on the new baby!
And cheers for taking the time to post these up. I would agree 100% with saying digital point is helpful at the start.
just lurking around forums, and getting into the fray from time to time, you absorb a lot of tips and ideas.
I also, think it is really, better, to take away all the information you read and hear, and then work out what you think for yourself (having absorbed what others think).

and then back your own judgement. 100%.

OK let’s see if I can come up with a new question rather than recycle the same old stuff.

Let’s say that someone has paid you an obscene amount of money to buy Shoemoney Media and all associated brands on the proviso that you never worked in Internet marketing again. What kind of business would you go into?

I’m guessing here that you’d carry on working rather than laze around all day sipping cocktails and watching UFC on a 400 foot plasma…

thanks for responding, however I wanted to know more about how you felt about social media and using it to drive traffic to your site. Also you dont have a sphinn and mixx account. How do you feel about them? Also i noticed your stumbleupon profile and twitter profile are not very active and you dont use it much. Are you using a different profile that is unknown to the public? Or do you think the time spent on those sites is not worth the payoff?

HI i am new to your blo.g Do you prefer hosting on personal on sever . i have recently ask my hosting company to change my server name( as i was not satisfied with their 99% uptime and frequently annoyed with that 1% down time ) They simply refuse to change my server name and transfer my domain name (kinda blackmailing) have you ever been in this kinda situation?

Perhaps the question should have been more detailed
    .
It was not asking for just the year end stats - it would be desirable to have REAL TIME full, stats continuously.
    .
Look at these other examples of Technorati to 100 blogs who do…
Most are using Sitemeter but Statcounter is also good :-D

OK let’s see if I can come up with a new question rather than recycle the same old stuff.

Let’s say that someone has paid you an obscene amount of money to buy Shoemoney Media and all associated brands on the proviso that you never worked in Internet marketing again. What kind of business would you go into?

I’m guessing here that you’d carry on working rather than laze around all day sipping cocktails and watching UFC on a 400 foot plasma…

    Jeremy, I have a question:
Do you think that it’s possible for a blog without a niche to become popular? My blog is doing pretty badly but that’s only because I’m barely promoting it and posting irregularly. When I start getting more free time, do you think that it’s possible that, although most main topics will be covered, the blog could do well?
I would say yes, but many others would say no…

    Great blog,
    Thanks Jeremy,
    Dom

This is probably going to mod’d by you SHOE MONEY, You know why SEO’s don’t go telling people exactly what we do? The indian factor :P SEO would be outsourced in a minute if I told anyone exactly how to get results. Insuling SEOs is not really nice at all don’t you think?

I myself am not the largest SEO person in the world, although I do have a $100,000.00 USD client I am working with, turning this money over. I also have worked for http://pokerinside.com, but I don’t have Matt Cutts phone number or even yours? Maybe you can fix this Shoe. California loves ya, but think about that, I could tell anyone exactly how to take down a SERP (it’s easy). But if we told everyone all the work would be outsourced. I don’t need you to believe me, as I have nothing to prove. I was just wondering if you could make a post about this, and acknowledge why some SEOS don’t like to share information, my friend it’s only because most of us are worried about losing out jobs.

Anyways not sure if you are even going to read this, or if I am talking into a void. I thought it made a really important part , that you and the other SEO guy (on the video) said without realizing why SEO’s don’t like to help everyone learn (marketing) and SEO. Hopefully this has not fallen on deaf ears, and either way it was worth writing you this post, because maybe, just mabye I will get a post made by shoe money on this topic.

    Much love shoemister!

Keep it real, with all the SEOs out here, it’s a harsh battle you know.

    Your Truly,

    DR.SEO

When I saw that on john chows about page said he practiced UFC I challenged him to a match over instant messanger and also I notified people at BODOG fight who said they would have put the fight on a undercard… but john did not want to … so sad… lots of links lost =(
