UFC 80 Bj Penn VS Joe Stevenson

by Jeremy Schoemaker on January 20, 2008 · 21 comments

Got in last night from San Francisco late and went over to my neighbors to watch UFC80. I got there just in time for the Gonzaga VS Werdum fight. Man I am glad I did not bet on this fight. I thought Gonzaga would win this fight pretty easy.

The BJ Penn vs Joe Stevenson went pretty much how I thought it would except I thought BJ looked extremely winded. He has always had issues with conditioning and he said this is the best shape of his life. I think he will have a VERY difficult time beating Sean Sherk. While BJ has amazing hands and BJJ – I think Sherk has by far better wrestling/ground and pound/conditioning. Sherk also has amazing submission defense. He has been locked in several rear naked chokes and they just seem to not effect him.

I cant wait until UFC 81. Lets see if Brock Lesnar is worth all they hype already ;)

When are we going to see fighters.com come on to the scene?

Me thinks Jeremy is doing some subliminal advertising for the new website with this post.

Brock Lesnar in UFC????
WTF?

I thought he was in WWE. Ok fine, that was a LONG time ago. Then someone said he was moving to American Football. Is that true?

Being that we just started on it a month ago… or so… its going to be a little bit.

We are still on target for a q1 soft launch for phase 1 (content/stats)

I’ve seen ufc-related posts on this blog for a long time, it’s just something he’s interested in but after letting us know about fighters.com, every such posts will act as a reminder from now on :)

I obviously have not been reading your blog long enough to know that. I think I’ll dig deeper into the archives.

I am glad Dana is starting to learn that he needs to build up characters more such as Brock Lesnar where people are excited to see them fight. I will be very interested to see what he can do and will purchase the PPV but I am one of my big UFC fans who is getting bored with the past few cards.

You must have been watching a different fight than the one I saw. Penn looked unstoppable and schooled Stevenson in everything they did in this fight. He completely overwhelmed Joe and truly looked like a top 3 pound for pound guy. He’s going to KILL Sean Sherk.

I agree he looked good… not arguing that. Just saying he was super winded. Sherk can do 5 rounds no problem.

I am a huge fan of BJ Penn. His talent has never been his question just his conditioning.

Lesnar is the real deal – a professional athlete all his life (don’t let the wwe stunt fool you)
Also Frank Mir is a has been, he has never been the same since his accident.
Lesnar will hold the heavy weight title, just a matter of time.

Have to agree the card was pretty week for UFC 80, but 79 was huge and 81 looks good.

Are you watching that show “Fight Quest” on Discovery?
The fighters travel to various countries to be taught the traditional martial art of that country.

Fun stuff, and what a great experience for those young fighters.

Best,
Coop

So who you got? Lesner or Mir? I’m picking Mir.

Did anyone notice UCF posted the results of the fights on their site before it even aired. I was very disappointed because I knew the outcome and didn’t even want to watch it.

I was a little surprised with BJ Penn’s endurance, but I’ll chalk it up to emotion and the fact taht he just finished joe stevenson. He certainly didn’t look gassed or tired during the fight. I did kind of raise an eyebrow when he was leaning on herb dean and joe rogan after the fight though. The clear example though was when his trainer told him to go thank the crowd or something and instead of straddling the cage like most fighters do, he just put his arms over it..haha.

I think BJ Penn probably has improved his game overall, but he still doesn’t train like Dan Henderson or Quinton Jackson. I don’t think he spends enough time working on his weaknesses, which is 100% conditioning. Perfect example, joe stevenson was running and training in high altitidue, and bj penn was sleeping in a high altitiude tent in his bedroom.

I think he probably was winded after the fight, but as Dave Meltzer pointed out, it was probably due more to celebrating and everything “hitting at once”. During the actual fight itself, he looked completely fine, and then once it was over it was like he hit a wall.

And besides, beating someone as bad as he beat Joe Daddy has to take a lot out of you. :-)

BJ Penn VS The Sherkster, don’t put your money on Sherk, especially if you are betting on Sherk tinking he still has that “Juice” power. BJ Penn will make mince meat out of him.

Joe Stevenson was finished before the fight even started. BJ Penn has amazing BJJ skills. There were so many times when BJ could have finished “Daddy” off. It was a normal training day for BJ, conditioned or not.
