Google TV coming soon

by Jeremy Schoemaker on January 8, 2008 · 51 comments

A CNN story has the scoop on the Google TV:

TOKYO, Jan. 7, 2008 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) — Japan’s Matsushita Electric Industrial Co (NYSE:MC) , the world’s largest consumer electronics maker, has teamed up with Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) and YouTube to commercialize flat panel television sets that allow users to access and view videos online, the Nikkei reported on Tuesday, without citing sources.

This will be the Google group’s first tie-up with a Japanese consumer electronics manufacturer in TV-related services, the business daily said.

The Internet-enabled plasma TVs are expected to hit store shelves in the US this spring, it said.

Google is the world’s largest Internet search engine, while YouTube is one of the most prominent players in online video distribution.

I will not be telling my kids about this – we’d have to suffer YouTube all day.

What are your thoughts Jeremy?
I’m excited but I’m sure it’ll take a while to get big in the US, UK and Canada (anywhere outside Asia where their internet speeds are mega-fast)…

And I wonder how small the tv will have to be to have youtube look decent. Youtube is not known for quality.

There is Google toilet paper also on its way to the market …so google can help you wipe your ass too!

Wow! It will be nice to spend a thousand dollars on a brand new HDTV and $50 bucks a month just to watch grainy, poorly-lit, 45-second videos of 12 year olds lighting farts or sexually ambiguous people scream and cry about pop music stars.

Sony Pictures Television Launches YouTube Channels. As more studios also come on board, this will make it worthwhile for many folks.

Not to mention concerts that are now debuting on YouTube.

Just try to imagine the YouTube of the beginning of the next decade – to see how this deal is going to fall into place and benefit everyone involved

I can’t say I’m that interested really. I do wonder what they’re going to do about the quality of the videos on YouTube to make them even look half way decent on a large plasma screen.

Sweet. Win win for everyone. Now you can get your brand new 150″ LCD from Panasonic, have 30 million channels and nothing on, and Panasonic will sell more TV’s than ever, because even more people will pull out their .357 and cap it’s ass and have to buy another one.

Then again, these days, having YouTube on the TV…will probably be the best damn thing on anyways.

I was just having a conversation late last night with a potential client where we discussed the look of the Internet and television in the future and how that look would merge.

Google does it all.

Youtube is a fad. Why would you buy a TV with a built in fad?

Reply

30 Derek January 8, 2008 at 10:37 am

By getting it into a mainstream everyday product, it will slowly start to become part of the everyday itself and not just a fad.

In your video post a couple days ago you said people don’t come to your blog to get news. How do you explain this post? :p

Reply

32 Unjustified Motorsports January 8, 2008 at 12:59 pm

The company’s announced it, CNN reported yet, shoemoney passes it on because he thinks it’s cool. So if 2 other people tell the world before you do I don’t know how much you could call that “news”.

Reply

33 Alan Johnson January 8, 2008 at 1:44 pm

Indeed, just because this is not necessarily a blog where news is presented, it doesn’t mean that a topic such as this one shouldn’t be covered from time to time.

At some point you have to justify the promise of the YouTube buy. They need a better model for abusiness stand-point. That’s why you see Google integrating it into everything.
