Million Dollar Wiki A Good Investment?

Posted on: September 11th, 2007 by Jeremy Schoemaker

When I first heard of the Million Dollar Wiki I first thought of the milliondollarhomepage. You know the story some dude sold pixels and made money. Hell I even dropped $100 on it for 1 pixel that you cant even see. To my surprise I did get a few hits from it…. not many but a few.. It was more for just to say “I was apart of it” more then anything else really.

So I heard about this site called Million Dollar Wiki and my first instinct was … ya… right another pixel page. But then a few weeks back John Chow wrote about the page and how he was seeing some nice traffic from it. I still was a little hesitant but I just keep seeing more and more people investing in this thing and I thought… damn maybe this boat is going to float after all??

So last week I purchased a page for $100 for Free Ringtones. In about 10 minutes I received a reply with my user name and password. I logged in and made my page… took about 30 mins or so (most of the time was spent getting images). I have spammed edited wikipedia enough I was familiar with the wysiwyg editor to make my page. If you haven’t used the editor it takes a minute to get used to some of the functions but its pretty easy to learn.

SO what to put on my page…. Well I wanted to do 2 things.
1) I wanted to make a post that there REALLY ARE FREE RINGTONE sites out there where people can get there ringtones for free.

2) I wanted to drive traffic to my free ringtone site.

So I made a basic review site but of course I listed my Free Ringtone site as the first one and its the only one with a hyper link… Some may think this is sneaky… I say smart. ufeelme?.

I set this up last Thursday then I kind of forgot about it. After all… the site owner says the pages will be online for a MINIMUM 15 years. This was something I was not planning on coming back to for a while.

So this morning I was looking at my Nextpimp statistics and low and behold… it had sent almost 180 unqiue visitors of which 2 purchased a premium membership to the website. Now the Nextpimp Premium membership is $19.95 per 6 months and it auto renews… so if these people stay on board for 2 cycles I already have almost broke even in… 4 days superhot! Now I don’t expect this to happen much but one thing is for sure – I will for sure get my money back.

So I wonder where the traffic came from… I looked for a “new sites” or something listed but could not find one. Then I checked out the forums and wow there is a lot of people talking in there. This thing might be a hit after all. A lot of the people talking in the forums area all talking about how they are making money from there million dollar wiki page.

The dude who owns it has sold almost 500 pages…. which translates to 50k! Being the site started about a month ago I would say thats pretty fricking good. unlike million dollar homepage I have actually gotten a measurable return on my investment.

Here is the bottom line. People are buying great keyword related domains everyday on this site. Are you going to take a chance for only $100 that you missed the boat on your niche? I am not.

Geez, you are really sold on this idea.

Makes me think I should start my own ‘million dollar something or other’ and promote it by getting big bloggers to write about me for free swag ;) no offense and not to say you did that, but it seems to be a really popular topic on big blogs now for some reason

  44. SpeedyVista
    September 14, 2007 at 4:47 pm

Damn son. unfortunately, not everyone is having such luck. if you check out the ‘money’ page on the blog you can see only a couple of sites that have broken even. The hype around this seems to be waning a bit, and surely in 15 years, there will be nada traffic (see how much millioindollarwebpage has fallen since launch).

It does bring hope, but it seems most of the successes are listed as a ‘featured’ page.. didnt check how that works, but yea.. the layout of the site is poor for spreading PR google juice around, as if it was fully filled, the pages for each category will have over 1000 links each on them which means 0 love passed on.

I think domain names will still be there :-) Once enough investment has been made in a particular technology it becomes entrenched and makes it painfully difficult for the marketplace to transition to anything else. Look at how tough it is to kick the gasoline habit in our autos.

I’d put my money on domain names sticking around… In fact, I have — I just bought Blog Advertising. :-)

  50. Justin Cook
    September 13, 2007 at 9:34 am

I’ll sit on it for a bit and see what happens.

One caveat: you can’t sell your page until Graham sells 10,000 pages. That might take a while….

So the next question was what to put on it. So I decided, I will use the page to run contest with cash prizes. And lets see how much traffic it actually produce and the quality of the traffic.

For anyone that is still sitting on the fence, you have two big name bloggers like ShoeMoney and John Chow who bought it. I think the day after John blogged about it, MDW sold 70 pages, and now 80 pages with ShoeMoney. This is exactly why I bought my page Stock Picks page. This is indirectly free publicity. It’s in their best interest to blog about it and they will create a spill over effect onto your pages…

  82. mariam
    September 11, 2007 at 6:05 pm

For those sitting on the fence about this, why not give it a roll? Think about it, two big name bloggers in ShoeMoney and John Chow have bought in. Yeah, they are self promoting but due to this self interest, they will KEEP on advertising for the MDW, which increases traffic for all and creates a spill over effect onto your page. I bought the Stock Picks page which I just feel compelled to mention ;)

If you have a small advertising budget you should get a Million dollar wiki page to act as a bridge page (I think that is the right terminology for it). I got the page Money Making Blog last month and I have already had good traffic coming from the page. Or if you just want to monetize a single page you could do that with your wiki page. $100 is chump change for anyone.

I just bought the personal-finance page there yesterday to see if it will drive traffic to my financial blog. It took about 3 hours to get my login info and I just threw up something there today, at least temporarily til I figure out how to best use it.

Sign ups are done manually – so with 80 sales in one day – Graham will busy all afternoon setting up your accounts. I don’t think he will be attending classes today:)

The shoemoney effect is on again. It looks like he sold 80 pages already today. Hope you are getting at least a 30% commission on signups from your blog!

You could just resell the login no..?

Can’t get adult themed keywords. But there is a nice list of keywords on the site on the very top in the middle.

I don’t know how long it will last either, but it definately has a better model then MDHomepage – with people behind the site and content on pages. It will def last 2 or 3 years and that’s all you need to make a great claim in it. If the reselling of keywords go big – it will last a lot longer.

Hi Shoe, Thanks for this. That is cheap advertising for 15 years. i have wasted a whole heap in newspapers over years, and the ads only last a day and they’re in the bin.

I hadn’t actually heard of it before this post. But I decided that I’d like to give it a shot, I bought the page for the City I live in, that should give me some leverage for local businesses and linking. Who knows….

Congrats to the dude that started it. $50K in a month is amazing!

Also if only 500 page have been sold there must still be a whole swag sweet keyword rich URLs up for grabs.

I tend to doubt when someone says “permanent link” or in this case “guaranteed 15 years”… it does not sound real, plus like the million dollar homepage, it can be a hit for a few months, but then the traffic collapses and in a year or two from now no one would remember or visit. It seems that everyone wants to use the gimmick of “million dollar”, but I think people are more cautious nowadays and won’t swallow the bait so easily.

I do not think this will work. How would I care about grabbing some popular keywords/phrases on a site like this?!! You can always get a address like http://abc.com/Free_Ringtones .

I bought a site but haven’t made anything yet. Mine is the “Dating Site”. Lots of clicks but probably just from curious people who are thinking of buying.

I remember when his website first started. My first visit there and he had sold maybe 3 pages. I thought to myself, this thing is NEVER going to take off. Then social bookmarkers and a couple of A-listers got a hold of it and boy did it take off. I’ve been proven wrong… yet again :) .

Reselling a page? hmmm. I wonder how that’s going to play out. Will it last for 15 years? I wonder about that too. I think a lot about the future of the Internet. Will we even have domain names in ten years? Will TV and Internet be one? If so, will that turn the Internet into another entity that is controlled by big media?

What a clever idea! The links will be worth it as their pagerank gets up there and it looks like their alexa rank is under 25k… sign me up

They allow reselling the pages so that could make for some interesting arbi results for anyone clever enough to grab popular keywords/phrases before anyone else.

Its definitely not a site thats going to last forever, since its basically all a free ad, but I’m jealous of his success already.
