Million Dollar Wiki A Good Investment?

159 responses..

When I first heard of the Million Dollar Wiki I first thought of the milliondollarhomepage. You know the story some dude sold pixels and made money. Hell I even dropped $100 on it for 1 pixel that you cant even see. To my surprise I did get a few hits from it…. not many but a few.. It was more for just to say “I was apart of it” more then anything else really.

So I heard about this site called Million Dollar Wiki and my first instinct was … ya… right another pixel page. But then a few weeks back John Chow wrote about the page and how he was seeing some nice traffic from it. I still was a little hesitant but I just keep seeing more and more people investing in this thing and I thought… damn maybe this boat is going to float after all??

So last week I purchased a page for $100 for Free Ringtones. In about 10 minutes I received a reply with my user name and password. I logged in and made my page… took about 30 mins or so (most of the time was spent getting images). I have spammed edited wikipedia enough I was familiar with the wysiwyg editor to make my page. If you haven’t used the editor it takes a minute to get used to some of the functions but its pretty easy to learn.

SO what to put on my page…. Well I wanted to do 2 things.
1) I wanted to make a post that there REALLY ARE FREE RINGTONE sites out there where people can get there ringtones for free.

2) I wanted to drive traffic to my free ringtone site.

So I made a basic review site but of course I listed my Free Ringtone site as the first one and its the only one with a hyper link… Some may think this is sneaky… I say smart. ufeelme?.

I set this up last Thursday then I kind of forgot about it. After all… the site owner says the pages will be online for a MINIMUM 15 years. This was something I was not planning on coming back to for a while.

So this morning I was looking at my Nextpimp statistics and low and behold… it had sent almost 180 unqiue visitors of which 2 purchased a premium membership to the website. Now the Nextpimp Premium membership is $19.95 per 6 months and it auto renews… so if these people stay on board for 2 cycles I already have almost broke even in… 4 days superhot! Now I don’t expect this to happen much but one thing is for sure - I will for sure get my money back.

So I wonder where the traffic came from… I looked for a “new sites” or something listed but could not find one. Then I checked out the forums and wow there is a lot of people talking in there. This thing might be a hit after all. A lot of the people talking in the forums area all talking about how they are making money from there million dollar wiki page.

The dude who owns it has sold almost 500 pages…. which translates to 50k! Being the site started about a month ago I would say thats pretty fricking good. unlike million dollar homepage I have actually gotten a measurable return on my investment.

Here is the bottom line. People are buying great keyword related domains everyday on this site. Are you going to take a chance for only $100 that you missed the boat on your niche? I am not.

    Its definitely not a site thats going to last forever, since its basically all a free ad, but I’m jealous of his success already.

    @January 21, 2008 4:17 am

    exactly. its all ads, so only advertisers would go there, so the only people that will view the pages are advertisers and curious blog readers. kudos to his success tho

    @January 21, 2008 4:35 am

    I take that back, I guess it’s not all ads… it’s crazy though. dude’s already got over $115,000

    Reselling a page? hmmm. I wonder how that’s going to play out. Will it last for 15 years? I wonder about that too. I think a lot about the future of the Internet. Will we even have domain names in ten years? Will TV and Internet be one? If so, will that turn the Internet into another entity that is controlled by big media?

    I think domain names will still be there :-) Once enough investment has been made in a particular technology it becomes entrenched and makes it painfully difficult for the marketplace to transition to anything else. Look at how tough it is to kick the gasoline habit in our autos.

    I’d put my money on domain names sticking around… In fact, I have — I just bought Blog Advertising. :-)

    I would think Google would look at this site as “paid links” and eventually penalize them.

    @January 21, 2008 4:19 am

    no one wants to link to an ad page, google will never give these pages a high pagerank

    I remember when his website first started. My first visit there and he had sold maybe 3 pages. I thought to myself, this thing is NEVER going to take off. Then social bookmarkers and a couple of A-listers got a hold of it and boy did it take off. I’ve been proven wrong… yet again :).

    @September 11, 2007 10:25 am

    All it takes is that first boost by a few big names! Unfortunately, that is hard to come by for many folks, including myself haha

    I tend to doubt when someone says “permanent link” or in this case “guaranteed 15 years”… it does not sound real, plus like the million dollar homepage, it can be a hit for a few months, but then the traffic collapses and in a year or two from now no one would remember or visit. It seems that everyone wants to use the gimmick of “million dollar”, but I think people are more cautious nowadays and won’t swallow the bait so easily.

    Can’t get adult themed keywords. But there is a nice list of keywords on the site on the very top in the middle.

    I don’t know how long it will last either, but it definately has a better model then MDHomepage - with people behind the site and content on pages. It will def last 2 or 3 years and that’s all you need to make a great claim in it. If the reselling of keywords go big - it will last a lot longer.

    If you have a small advertising budget you should get a Million dollar wiki page to act as a bridge page (I think that is the right terminology for it). Or if you just want to monetize a single page you could do that with your wiki page. $100 is chump change for anyone.
