Life Goals

I get some weird questions via email sometimes and today I got one that asked me what my life goals were… well it just so happens I recently had this conversation with my wife and we found some documents to back it up.

When I was 10 years old for a school project we had to come up with a list of life goals.

Mine were:

Graduate High School
Graduate College
Goto Law School
Start Own Law Practice
Buy a Major League Baseball Team

Then 4 years later when I was 14 I made the same list. This time with timelines:

Get Married by 30
Be a millionaire by 35
Earn a doctorate by age 40
Be knighted by the Queen Of England by 50

I am not sure what happen to me between 10 and 14 I guess just getting older.. (duh) anyway Out of the first list I only accomplished Graduating High School.

I am doing pretty good with the 2nd list. I was married NINE days before i turned 30 and I earned my first million at age 31 so the first 2 are checked. I think I have a pretty good shot at earning a honorary doctorate still… but unless we do something that seriously impacts humanity being knighted by the Queen of England is quite the long shot.

Earn a doctorate by age 40
Be knighted by the Queen Of England by 50

You still have lots of time in front of you. I wish you success on your third goal. It time to go back to school :D

  2. Michael Fultz

I think you may be on your way to becoming a knight, if you continue to get the press you’ve been getting..

  3. ***V***

I only recently discovered making goals and you knew this at age 10! I need to catch up.

  4. stupid 3gp

you are quite on the track … wish you a best of luck for future ventures.

  5. Joeychgo

EH, you never know. He might get an honorary degree from somewhere.

  6. ME

Uhh, pretty sure you don’t have a shot at a doctorate. Honorary doctorate? Tough chance. Maybe if you found a cure for cancer.

    Good try though, dropout.

  7. The Dino

It is possible that in 14 you realized that you like women and you were desperate to get some. When you were 10 women were just enemies :) Anyway congrats… I have just first checkpoint… but I think I make the second untill 35 also…

  8. TheDirectoryDude

I just rewrote my goals recently and when talking about it with some old friends was surprised how much they have changed. It is a very interesting exercise that I would recommend.

  9. Lucie

I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss the knighthood just yet….up until recently we have had the fine tradition of awarding honours for cash, so you never know :)

  10. Gecko Tales

Great, now we are going to turn this blog into a debate on religion.
I don’t believe in atheist. I don’t think it’s possible to be atheist. I have no idea what the higher power is but I know there is one. It takes faith, experience, and intelligence to understand evolution, understand the flaws in the Bible, and the problems with religion to still believe in something more. Atheism is and easy excuse to get out self-exploration and thinking.
    Anyway, back to goals…

  11. Gecko Tales

You can’t get a lordship if you are an American citizen, but I bet you can get an honorary one if the Queen really likes you. Would you bang the Queen for a royal title?

  12. Enwikopedia

Shoe, how old are you now? 32?

  13. Theo

I’m missing the greatest marketing job on the planet. ‘become president of the usa’

  14. lyricsreg

4 years ? You can do it in 4 months … easy

  15. Gary R. Hess

Shoe, you should consider buying part of the MLB team… it would be a nice place to hold business meetings ;)

  16. Grivon

I’ve never made any – or at least can’t remember/find them from so long ago – so here goes:

Read/learn php like the back of my hand within 4 years… is that even possible?!

  17. Grivon

And now I know for sure why the title is changing!! :S

  18. Nick Sullivan

    Exactly

  19. stupid 3gp

Interesting to know about this. You really on the way man. Best of luck for your future projects and aims :)

  20. Theo

Only insecure people need a god to believe in..

  21. Jack

I am a married atheist. I made a choice to enter into a union, but God wasn’t involved. There are some legal and other reasons to get married, unfortunately. While most of the US identifies as Christian, I think only a small % are very religious. Most people are sheep though.

  22. Real Life Goals

What you are here for? think about it deeply, in profound manner.

  23. ritchie

    gotta set a deadline!

  24. ritchie

Yeah, Shoe already kinda knew back then that you always gotta save some goals for later!

  25. Nick Sullivan

Really, you believe in a higher power? wow, I couldn’t be more of an atheist. Once you really look into the theory of evolution, I don’t see how you can believe in any sort of God. I’ve always found the idea of God ridiculous and think it’s a weak minded person that ‘needs’ to believe in it as a crutch for some reason.

  26. ShoeMoney

I believe in a higher power… not sure if its god or what… I dunno if I would call myself a christian.

  27. ShoeMoney

haha hilarious… adding that to the title array()

  28. Nick Sullivan

My main goal though is to be a millionaire by 25!

  29. Nick Sullivan

I don’t see any point in getting married. It really only means anything if you believe in God. Which I don’t, i’m an atheist, so marrige to me means… nothing, it’s just tokenistic. I suppose it’s more… tradition in US though, but probably only because America have adopted to religion more. I’d say the majority of UK don’t believe in God but majority of US still do.

    Do you Shoe?

  30. CatherineL

Well done on your list so far. You definitely stand a chance of getting an honorary knighthood from the Queen but, you wouldn’t be allowed to call yourself Sir. Even Bill Gates is not allowed to do that.

I suppose there’s lots of ways you could get knighted. Why not write something really controversial, like Salman Rushdie did? Probably best not to go quite as far as him tho, or you’ll probably spend the next 10 years in hiding.

  31. STUART Hannig

I had some life goals, don’t remember what they were though. How can you?

  32. Jonathan Volk

Hahaha It’s amazing how our goals change. My goal when I was a little kid was to be a baker. Its 15 years later and I still dont know how to cook anything. I’m much better at internet marketing. Lol.

  33. king jacob

I would have bough the mets, now its the astros cause its sad watching all of houston get excited and then have the ’stros choke.

  34. king jacob

Do you have to be british to be knighted by the Queen?

  35. Hip Hop

My goal is to graduate college and start my own business aside from my website

  36. chrisblogging.com

Glad to see that you are on track with your goals. You still have pletny of time to get knighted!

  37. Micky Ward

There’s no one you want to meet or places you want to see? A helicopter ride through the grand canyon is one of them for me. Very obtainable.

  38. Joeychgo

    Ambitious goals. Especially being knighted.

  39. SeanIM

Congrats man…I can see you chilling with Sir Richard Branson talking about your twitterings one day. :)

  40. SonicReducer

Nice achievements. I wanted to be a stuntman when I was a kid. Oh well, I guess affiliate marketer will have to do ;)

  41. Rhys

    That’s a plus.

On the negative side there’s far fewer buxom wenches.

  42. dapyx

Maybe it’s because what he was telling it’s true. Only few people understand him and even fewer people put into practice his knowledge.

  43. Paul Bradish

I had to recently leave a “young entrepreneur” forum because RDPD was far too prominent.

  44. CPA Affiliates

*LOL* you knew it was gonna come up… Rarely can you talk about big money and someone not mention RDPD.

  45. lyricsreg

What is it with all the “get married by …” goals ? What’s wrong with having lots of girlfriends until you become a millionaire ? After that you can settle down

  46. CPA Affiliates

Congrats MAN! i have several goals myself and so far i have hit everyone but just as u did they get harder as the years go by… but i am still shooting for them.

  47. Ginene

That is pretty good. I wrote my goals down as well and only got 2 out of 4 which was to get married by 25 and own a house by 35 but I also said to be a millionaire by 35 and I only have a few months left. Guess that wont happen unless I play the lotto and get lucky. :) Also another goal I have always had is to walk the red carpet. I might just buy a red carpet and walk down it. LOL

  48. g-man

amazing! n it really preps me up for my immediate goal…to get a sixpack by my next birthday :) all the best for your last goal, go kick a$$!

  49. Gecko Tales

My goals included owning a Ferrari by the time I was thirty, being a black belt, and a millionaire. I haven’t hit any of the three, but the first two goals are not important to me any more. I have new goals now like making enough money to pursue creative interest, travel, and spend time with my wife and upcoming baby.
Things change. I don’t give a rat’s ass about owning a Ferrari now. I’m not sure I would buy one even if I had a few extra million in the bank. 25 or 50 extra million maybe

  50. Dave

first of all you should start speaking with a british accent like Madonna… that could help!

  51. jim

    Fewer deaths by sword.

  52. jim

Forgive my ignorance but how old are you Shoe?

  53. jim

Wow, only two responses to a post about money before the obligatory Rich Dad Poor Dad reference…

  54. Travel Notebook

Cool. I wish I would have documented life goals every year just to see how things changed. Its cool that you have these records.

  55. Stock Investing Guides

    shoemoney,

I envied you..at a very young age you already have millions. i think it would be nice if you write a post on how to be a millionaire at the age of 31.

    Cheers!
    Sig

  56. king jacob

and thats different from medieval times how?

  57. Sam

So which baseball team would you have bought as a kid? For me , it was the Tigers, because Cecil Fielder hit 50 home runs and nobody could ever do that again, right?

One of my goals has always been to kick Prince Charles in the shins. Though I don’t quite know where I ever got that goal from…

  58. Rhys

The latter, but looking at my physique now, probably the former ;)

  59. The SEO Millionaire

“Lord of the Ringtones”! I love it! And it would be cooler than being a knight.

  60. Mubin

Write a book and you should be elgible to get knighted… Im sure once you get filthy rich and start donating to the right charities the queen will take notice.

But srysly the people getting knighted nowadays turn out to be criminals and bigots anyways so its not much fun anymore.

  61. Matthew

Like a big daddy or giant haystacks wrestler? or a WWF type?

  62. Rhys

I wanted to be a wrestler, and a firefighter. Now my dreams of firefighted have long since been extinguishing (ba-ZING), but I still wouldn’t say no to being a wrestler!

  63. Rhys

Technically it’s a “Lairdship” (as it’s Scottish Land), but it works the same way as buying land on the moon.

  64. Patrick Altoft

You can just buy yourself a Lordship in the UK by buying some land. Its much better than being a Knight.

You could be Lord of the Ringtones.

  65. Click Input

Funny how things change over time… one goal of mine that has never changed has been to earn truckloads of cash. Exactly how I am still working on!

  66. dapyx

Nice goals (I mean the 2nd list). They are 2 different lists. The 2 lists look like you first made a list by listening to your teachers and other educated people that you considered important in life, and the 2nd list it’s like you’ve read the “Rich Dad Poor Dad” book and you managed to open your eyes and start hoping for things that really matter in life.
Great job! You are a model for all of us.

  67. Matthew

Be knighted by the queen of England… thats a cool goal. Not one I have ever thought of. I would have to digg up old lists to see what my goals where when I was younger. I seem to remember for a school project we burried them all in a capsule and they were sent to me 10 – 15 years later.
