Life Goals

Posted on: August 28th, 2007 by Jeremy Schoemaker

I get some weird questions via email sometimes and today I got one that asked me what my life goals were… well it just so happens I recently had this conversation with my wife and we found some documents to back it up.

When I was 10 years old for a school project we had to come up with a list of life goals.

Mine were:

Graduate High School
Graduate College
Goto Law School
Start Own Law Practice
Buy a Major League Baseball Team

Then 4 years later when I was 14 I made the same list. This time with timelines:

Get Married by 30
Be a millionaire by 35
Earn a doctorate by age 40
Be knighted by the Queen Of England by 50

I am not sure what happen to me between 10 and 14 I guess just getting older.. (duh) anyway Out of the first list I only accomplished Graduating High School.

I am doing pretty good with the 2nd list. I was married NINE days before i turned 30 and I earned my first million at age 31 so the first 2 are checked. I think I have a pretty good shot at earning a honorary doctorate still… but unless we do something that seriously impacts humanity being knighted by the Queen of England is quite the long shot.

Uhh, pretty sure you don’t have a shot at a doctorate. Honorary doctorate? Tough chance. Maybe if you found a cure for cancer.

    Good try though, dropout.

It is possible that in 14 you realized that you like women and you were desperate to get some. When you were 10 women were just enemies :) Anyway congrats… I have just first checkpoint… but I think I make the second untill 35 also…

I just rewrote my goals recently and when talking about it with some old friends was surprised how much they have changed. It is a very interesting exercise that I would recommend.

I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss the knighthood just yet….up until recently we have had the fine tradition of awarding honours for cash, so you never know :)

Great, now we are going to turn this blog into a debate on religion.
I don’t believe in atheist. I don’t think it’s possible to be atheist. I have no idea what the higher power is but I know there is one. It takes faith, experience, and intelligence to understand evolution, understand the flaws in the Bible, and the problems with religion to still believe in something more. Atheism is and easy excuse to get out self-exploration and thinking.
    Anyway, back to goals…

You can’t get a lordship if you are an American citizen, but I bet you can get an honorary one if the Queen really likes you. Would you bang the Queen for a royal title?

I am a married atheist. I made a choice to enter into a union, but God wasn’t involved. There are some legal and other reasons to get married, unfortunately. While most of the US identifies as Christian, I think only a small % are very religious. Most people are sheep though.

Really, you believe in a higher power? wow, I couldn’t be more of an atheist. Once you really look into the theory of evolution, I don’t see how you can believe in any sort of God. I’ve always found the idea of God ridiculous and think it’s a weak minded person that ‘needs’ to believe in it as a crutch for some reason.

  26. ShoeMoney
    August 28, 2007 at 8:15 pm

I don’t see any point in getting married. It really only means anything if you believe in God. Which I don’t, i’m an atheist, so marrige to me means… nothing, it’s just tokenistic. I suppose it’s more… tradition in US though, but probably only because America have adopted to religion more. I’d say the majority of UK don’t believe in God but majority of US still do.

    Do you Shoe?

    August 28, 2007 at 5:36 pm

Well done on your list so far. You definitely stand a chance of getting an honorary knighthood from the Queen but, you wouldn’t be allowed to call yourself Sir. Even Bill Gates is not allowed to do that.

I suppose there’s lots of ways you could get knighted. Why not write something really controversial, like Salman Rushdie did? Probably best not to go quite as far as him tho, or you’ll probably spend the next 10 years in hiding.

That is pretty good. I wrote my goals down as well and only got 2 out of 4 which was to get married by 25 and own a house by 35 but I also said to be a millionaire by 35 and I only have a few months left. Guess that wont happen unless I play the lotto and get lucky. :) Also another goal I have always had is to walk the red carpet. I might just buy a red carpet and walk down it. LOL

My goals included owning a Ferrari by the time I was thirty, being a black belt, and a millionaire. I haven’t hit any of the three, but the first two goals are not important to me any more. I have new goals now like making enough money to pursue creative interest, travel, and spend time with my wife and upcoming baby.
Things change. I don’t give a rat’s ass about owning a Ferrari now. I’m not sure I would buy one even if I had a few extra million in the bank. 25 or 50 extra million maybe

Write a book and you should be elgible to get knighted… Im sure once you get filthy rich and start donating to the right charities the queen will take notice.

But srysly the people getting knighted nowadays turn out to be criminals and bigots anyways so its not much fun anymore.

Nice goals (I mean the 2nd list). They are 2 different lists. The 2 lists look like you first made a list by listening to your teachers and other educated people that you considered important in life, and the 2nd list it’s like you’ve read the “Rich Dad Poor Dad” book and you managed to open your eyes and start hoping for things that really matter in life.
Great job! You are a model for all of us.

  67. Matthew
    August 28, 2007 at 3:53 am

Be knighted by the queen of England… thats a cool goal. Not one I have ever thought of. I would have to digg up old lists to see what my goals where when I was younger. I seem to remember for a school project we burried them all in a capsule and they were sent to me 10 – 15 years later.
