OpenAds was my guest on the 8-14-2007 Shoemoney show. We discussed the basics of OpenAds, how advertisers can use it to make money, and the future of OpenAds. I think it should be pretty informative for anyone who users OpenAds or just wanted to learn more about it.
I upgraded my own OpenAds to the new 2.3 Beta last night and will be doing a full writeup shortly.
You can listen to the show with the player below or by downloading it directly from webmaster radio here
Thanks again to Scott from OpenAds for coming on the show!
Next week we will be doing a live show from the Search Engine Strategies conference in San Jose California!

thanks for posting this here for lazy people like me to listen to.

One of the most important parts of that conversation was choosing a good name. A name can make a huge difference.

cool i will download it and give it a listen.
[Reply]
great audio. Learned a little.
[Reply]
another cool thing is you can geo-target your own ads too.

Nice to hear as always. Don’t think I’ll be migrating to OA just yet though

Rotation is a great use for using OpenAds, but going one step further, OpenAds can also provide a sense of security, because if a visitor takes a look at your site source code they will not be able to see your Adsense code or affiliate code, because it hides behind the OpenAds code, which is great for keeping sneaky and unethical competitors from sabatoging your Adsense publisher ID.

Good show. Love hearing about success

Im not a huge fan of OpenAds. It seems a bit of an overkill for most users

This one sounded better than the last one. Good show.

I have Open Ads on a few sites that really need it but using it makes the site really slow. You need a pretty robust server, IMO. Also the javascript doesn’t validate so if that bothers you it is a drawback.
But it works great for managing a lot of banners without monkeying around with html templates.
[Reply]
on my way to listen to it now

Good Show, I’m looking forward to know more about openads.

Hey good interview shoe, i had no idea about this company before but I sure do now “Thanks”.

thanks for the great audio version. It is handy when want to make custom deals with advertisers on your site.

Great show like always!

Openads definitely does a lot statistics wise and therefore has some overhead, but loading of ads in general should not slow down your website. Perhaps some simple configuration changes can help, but a normal sever should be able to handle a good load of traffic.
One major issue to research is to see if your MySQL queries are perhaps being queue’d as tables are locked, and perhaps this is causing an un-needed delay
xHTML compliancy is a feature added to 2.3, as validation will depend on the doctype of your website so it can give you some choice there
You’re welcome to come by the Openads forum at anytime for some help

I don’t know why, but it seems like the RSS feed for Net Income keeps moving around. Everytime I update itunes, etc… it can’t find it and I have to go look up the new feed address. Anyone else having this problem?

Props to Scott, I like how down to earth he was and for sharing the history behind phpadsnew/openads. I dig it

Good discussion - for anybody that doesn’t want to bother with OpenAds due to not knowing how to install it, just pay somebody to do it.
I tried installing phpAdsNew years ago and had trouble, so rather than eat up time doing something I didn’t want to do, I just outsourced.
You can get somebody through RentACoder for $25 or so to get it up and running.

This is exactly the type of solution I was looking for a few months ago… I guess I didn’t search hard enough, great infomation. I have just downloaded it and will give it a try in a day or two!

I’ve been using OpenAds for ages… it’s free, supports Geotargetings, works well, and did I mention its free?
[Reply]
How did you like it??
[Reply]
lol I believe you did!! It is a great idea for anyone just getting into the ad rotation scene for sure..

I know that it can be hard to set up so I am offering a trail run for people to try out OpenAds on my site:

It is a great platform but there is a bit of a learning curve to it.
