Movable Type 4 Released – Does Anyone Care

by Jeremy Schoemaker on August 15, 2007 · 40 comments

Before wordpress was “the” blogging platform there was this other thing called Movable Type. Yesterday they released version 4.0. Its kind of sad though… like watching yahoo trying to compete with Google still. You lost try again.

The only blogger I can think of that still uses Move able Type is Guy Kawasaki and Neil Patel tells me its just because they are adverse to change. He also talks about how much Movable Type still sucks.

Anyway if you are into Movable Type you can read the Anal Dash interview here on problogger.

If you check Google Trends it looks like its not even fair:

WordPress vs Moveable Type

Pretty much says it all, MT is out-of-vogue unfortunately

I remember when Anil Dash talked shit about shoemoney on seomoz a long time ago I guess it comes back around.

I tried to install MT a very long time ago, got pissed and downloaded B2. When that morphed into WordPress, I stuck with it. I’ve been in love ever since.

Two of the top five blogs on Technorati use Movable Type, both of which I assume account for more traffic then the rest of the top 50 combined.

SixApart boasts having many of the top 100 blogs on Technorati, but like mentioned above, it would just be too hard to change to a better alternative.

Wow the Google Trends graph tells all. Pretty sad

wow trends shows moveable type is almost even with “shoemoney” which is 0 lol

The google trend chart with “Blogger” tells you nothing. I don’t think the term “Blogger” is strictly used for the blogging plattform.
BTW Seth Godin is using MT as well

Most people when they are using a platform for a long time are very adverse to change…. for instance if I would want to switch to something else I would lose a lot of posts and stuff… plus just the pain of moving.

Scoble does it regularly… but he kind of doesnt seem to care

Here is a
list of which companies use MT

I think that it is impressive.

very small marketshare compared to companies using wordpress

Jeff Pulver uses Movable Type too. That’s the only blog I’ve ever noticed using Movable Type.

Try “blogspot” for a more realistic visual. “Blogger” would include things like “shoemoney the blogger” which would have nothing to do with blogger.com. :)

I chuckled when MT announced they might go open-source, what a joke

MT has a much stronger corporate marketshare than Wordpress ever will, largely because corporations don’t allow software that is regularly exploited like Wordpress to run on their networks. Wordpress while popular, is a complete security mess. When you are constantly being rooted, you will get a lot of mentions in Google Trends.

MT is a pain to install. Probably one of the leading growth factors is WP being included in Fantastico.

I have one of my blogs with Moveable Type and I’ve had so many headaches with it! However, I have to say it has forced me to learn more about HTML – more than I really care to…

I think WP has pretty much taken over. I used this in the past, but it really cant hold a candle to WP…

As far as I remember you need to pay for MT as soon as you put ads on it… so that rules it out for almost everyone. And with WP kicking ass and being free, who is going to pay for something inferior and harder to use?

“Typepad uses MT and there are very important guys that blog over there including Seth Godin.”

It’s only because people such as Seth Godin have no clue how to set up their own websites, so they use pre-packaged solutions instead. So their choice of platform isn’t related to performance, just making an easy purchase. 2c.

Houstonist and all the gothamist blogs use MT so it must work okay.

I’m always excited when the blogging turf gets an upgrade / new player… the more competition there is out there, the better our options are available to us!
