Openads On The Shoemoney Show Tonight

41 responses..

For years I have been using openads (phpadsnew) and its been amazing to watch it grow. They have built quite a service and community.

Tonight on the Shoemoney show my guest will be from Scott Switzer from openads.org. Scott is the Community Leader. If you have any specific questions you would like me to ask Scott please post them in the comments.

    I’m a blogger, i’ve been successful with other contextual and affiliate programs, why should I give openads a shot and swap it in place of something existing and successful? (other than to experiment and test, which is a good thing on its own anyway)

    Michael Says:

    They’re not a program. Openads is an adserver solution, like Doubleclick. They give you the tech to easily serve advertisements. It can help easily rotate ads, geo target, and track.

    Looking forward to the show.

    Q: With the integration of click tracking, are there plans for more analytical features?

    Was Auctionads based on the Openads platform?

    @August 14, 2007 6:27 pm
    Jonathan Says:

    Nope, completely built from the ground up as far as I know.

    AuctionAds serves a different purpose than OpenAds would. AuctionAds utilizes the eBay API rather than a normal ad delivery system.

    Dear Scott,

    How drastically has the openads system changed from day 1? Was scalability a major issue for you at 5,000 publishers? 10,000 publishers? Ever?

    Not sure if this is one that he’d answer but…
    Q: At what traffic level does it make financial sense to switch from ad networks to selling your own ads using OpenAds? It can be time-consuming to manage your own adserving (as well as customer service), so I’m not sure when it’s wise to make the switch.

    Hope I can post more than one. I am using phpadsnew 2.0.11

    At what point should I make the switch to 2.3? What is the deliniator? What are the advantages for switching?

    Why is it so hard to adjust the frequency of ads relative to other ads in the ad group? I have used the weight but it does not seem to have that much effect on some ads relative to others. Do you plan on using something other than weight?

    What is the best way to set up the inventory? Lets say I am using this for one large site and several smaller sites. I use Adsense, a few cpa netowrks, and a cpm network. Under advertisers and campaigns do I list the programs, the affiliate networks or the sites? How does this effect frequency?

    Thanks for the great free product!

    @August 14, 2007 12:04 pm

    Q: why can’t I run one ad creative on different sites with different display settings?

    I have used phpadsnew about 3 years ago, I liked it a lot! I used a celeron 2.4 1GB ram dedicated to running phpadsnews. It could handle about 2.5mln adrequests a day. I’m reading the openads blog and it looks like openads should be much faster then the old phpadsnew.

    I’m actually installing a system to run openads accros my network in a few days:
    webserver: P4 2.8GHZ, 2GB ram, 18GB 15000RPM HD
    DBserver: 2*dualcore 2.0, 10GB ram, 36GB 15000RPM HD

    Q: Will this system be able to handle +12mln ad request a day? I will be geotargetting, frequency capping etc.

    Can you explain how I can optimize my ads by creating custom campaigns that display unique creative based on visitor IP?

    @August 14, 2007 1:37 pm
    DonnyC Says:

    I’m launching a site and plan to sell the inventory on a CPM basis. When setting up a CPM campaign, there is usually negotiation about who will track the campaign, discrepancy caps and who’s numbers will be reflected in the invoice. I’ve looked at a number of ad serving solutions and am leaning towards Openads. My only concern is that the stats reported by Openads might be taken with a grain of salt compared to DoubleClick, DirecTrack, etc. Given that there is always a discrepancy between client and publisher numbers, I need to make sure my stats are looked at in the same light as other ad servers. I’m not even sure this is a question for OpenAds - perhaps it’s more suited for someone who has worked with multiple ad servers and has enough knowledge to compare each. Either way, I’m just looking for some insight on the accuracy of OpenAds reporting and whether or not it reflects similar stats to most of the major ad servers out there.

    I have a question - how did he get into online advertising in the first place? Running his own PPC/AM campaigns? Blogging? Something else?

    What’s in store for future development? It would be great to get a sneak peak of some ideas of what to expect down the road. We all have planning to do and having a vague idea of what to expect would be a very nice thing to provide OpenAds customers with.

    I would like to know:
    - Advertiser Self Service Features planned including the ability to manage their ads, a system for them to buy ads, billing, etc.
    - How fast is the development schedule. Now that you raised $5 million are you using those funds for development of the open source software or are you depending on contributions to the community by developers (more risk of slow downs).

    @August 14, 2007 4:25 pm

    Its a great setup. HAs used it for various sites.

    What are the plans to combat / work with ad blocking software
    You are planning/ have done some UI testing in London recently how did that go
    What time scale are we looking at for a complete UI rewrite(ha!)
    I read about the possibility of a way of doing ads so that if one displayed randomly it would automatically display another in another spot so you could have an image at the top and a connecting image on the right that would flow to be one image, is this feature still in development?

    @August 15, 2007 5:46 am

    Oo, this should be a pretty good one. Interesting.
