My Dad Catching The Big Fish

By Jeremy Schoemaker 46 comments

In last weeks questions someone asked “whos your daddy”. Well I will tell you about my Dad. He is a bad ass even in retirement who goes around the world and catches 100+ lbs fish. He runs a fishing community site at Where I Fish.com

Things were not always great for my dad though. About 10 years ago he had a stroke and shortly after they found out he had a enlarged heart. They only gave him a few months to live. It was pretty crazy. I am not much of a crier but I think that day was one of about 5 times in my life I remember actually shedding tears. Anyway it was a very dark day when they gave my dad only a few days to live.

But the craziness even goes farther back. My grandma Schoemaker was born in 1900. When she was 20- something (1920’s) she went to a carnival and went to see a gypsee. The gypsee told her she would go on to meet a wonderful man and have a great family and also live to be very old BUT she would be sad as she would OUTLIVE all of her children.

Well over the years my uncle died of a drug overdose… my aunt died of cancer… my other aunt committed suicide … then my dad was the only one left and now hes been given a sentence of only a few months to live! SCARY!

Long story short he actually died a few times then was brought back… He got a heart transplant and has been going strong since. Very shortly after he got his transplant my grandmother passed away. Its like the gypsee had told her all she would live to see all her children pass… and in a sense she did… weird huh?

Sorry I got off on a add moment telling that story… The main story I wanted to post was how my dad was macking it hard last week in Spain catching 100+ LBS catfish!

Check out these pictures:

My father runs Allcheapfares.com and I help with the marketing and we got invited for 10 days once and 1 day was spent at a fishing lodge were this is all they did..catch Godzilla size fish!

hey show…so you couldn’t convince your dad to run adsense on his blog?

Pretty amazing Story!. I like to fish too, though the biggest I’ve catched was a salmon of about 6kg here in Chile.

Huge catfish. I thought the one I caught last year was huge but those would swallow the thing with ease. That’s in Spain? What kind of catfish are they and what was he using for bait?

Is that a fresh water fish? Doesn’t look like the catfish
in the south. Is it a different species?

Thanks for sharing this personal story, I was pretty touched when I read it… the gypsee prediction stuff is really weird - amazing. And congrats to your Dad, that’s one monster of a fish…

I thought the fish was going to be the coolest part of the post and they you told the story about your grandma. That’s very cool. Tell him to come to Georgia and fish for trout. They are way small, but it’s great to wade through the North Georgia Moutain streams.
