Cmon Google News

by Jeremy Schoemaker on August 2, 2007 · 58 comments

I got off the plane in Lincoln and I had a text message from Dillsmack saying there was a video online of the bridge collapsing. I hit Google News and searched for it… The first thing I typed in was Minneapolis video and this is what I got:

minneapolis video - Google News

Following the first listing you get this page. Nice use of every possible Google Adsense link but no video.

Actual Video Of Minnesota Bridge Collapse As It Happened - Original News: The Post Chronicle

Here is the second link which claims to be a Fox News Site. As you can see above Google thinks its authoritative.

MyFox Washington DC | Fox 5 News | WTTG

So ok Google you say you don’t allow search listings in search listings but you allow these bullshit news sites in Google news that are nothing but made for Adsense sites?

and no I am not saying Google is intentionally profiting from this tragedy.

EDIT:

Found the video here:

that is just wrong! I understand it will be a sudden hot search but to flip it into a money maker is just bad karma

I would go with Kare11 or WCCO. Fox News has never been very good IMO.

surely fox is reporting it was a suspected illegal alien terrorist that caused this and who was let in the country by a soft on terror liberal by now.

A lot of news sites are using Adsense Ads and other means of earnings now. Thanks for sharing the video link :)

I’ve been noticing as well that Google news needs some serious improvement. The sources are crap for a lot of major stories. It seems that the less publicized news stories have better sources indexed. Weird :-S

Unfortunately, this is the case with many, many articles – not just the bridge collapse. News sites are notoriously designed like crap.

I aswell am disappointed with google news’ quality level – I’m pretty sure you have to be a member of either google adsense and/or doubleclick google to get into the “google news feed” no?

wow that’s a nice adsense layout to learn from!
I never realize Google News could have used such site as news… Looks like a good news for us who want to create a news site which is searchable from Google News now.

Where’d they get this video? Right place at the right time, or is this camera some sort of permanent security mounted camera?

it’s a security camera

You have to request it and then show that you’re big enough, people send in petitions, etc. it’s a drawn out process

Google wants more money. Or may be the rison is a freshness of indexed content: according to my experience Google index sites with adsense ads more often than others.

I don’t even use G news anymore. I actually find Yahoo news better.

You should probably link directly to the Google Video.

NO ONE should profit from this event. People have lost their lives.

Reply

37 Travel Notebook August 3, 2007 at 3:13 pm

must be some kind of security cam

Wait, somebody actually has a domain about the bridge crash and is running adsense ads at the top? Kinda shady…

42 BloggingDosh August 3, 2007 at 5:37 pm

I can remember when Google News had just a few news sites indexed and they verified and continued to verify each one. THe quality back then was really great but the speed at which they found new stories was not as good.

I think Google should put resources towards the qualty of sites indexed on Google News.

Reply

43 BloggingDosh August 3, 2007 at 5:38 pm

Someone actually has done that? IF they have thats horrible.

Reply

44 CPA Affiliates August 3, 2007 at 10:52 pm

they probably got the template in que just waiting for the next hot story to crank out a page on.

45 cooliojones August 4, 2007 at 2:31 am

With a ll of these cameras in the world and the goverment watching our every move seemingly, I would think they would have more footage than just a security camera. But it’s still a frightening video.

They don’t waste time in getting a website devoted to it tough huh? The only thing is, they won’t make long-term money from it.

Google behaves realy strange sometimes. I am pushed away from first position by sites which have review of my site or using keywords with link to my site.

Reply

50 Michael Fultz August 4, 2007 at 11:07 pm

I think that Google would rather direct you to sites where Adsense scripts would be running.. that’s why you got what you got..

Reply

51 ritchie August 5, 2007 at 6:14 am

That thought just came to my mind, too.

Reply

52 ritchie August 5, 2007 at 6:14 am

Yeah, it’s rather adsense sites than news sites.

Reply

53 ritchie August 5, 2007 at 6:15 am

It really worked great in the beginning, but now there’s far better sources.

Reply

54 ritchie August 5, 2007 at 6:16 am

If they continue running their business like that, it’s the best thing we can happen. Cause this way competitors get a serious chance to enter the market…
