UFC 73: Stacked Affiliate Summit Meetup

by Jeremy Schoemaker on July 5, 2007 · 43 comments

Ok I will be getting into Miami for the Affiliate Summit about 10pm and I will be ready to watch the UFC fights. Anyone going to a local bar or something where they will have the fights? How about a Hooters in Miami ?

This card is pretty unreal.

Here are my pics (in bold):

Diego Saraiva (+240) vs. Jorge Gurgel (-225)

Chris Lytle (-410) vs. Jason Gilliam (+330)

Mark Bocek (+260) vs. Frank Edgar (-310)

Mike Nickels (+400) vs. Stephan Bonnar (-450) I think this is bonnars first fight back after being suspended for ROIDS ? He should be good to go.

Anderson Silva (-150) vs. Nate Marquardt (+140) – This is my upset pick of the night. I think Nate Marquardt will overpower Silva. Ive seen Silva fight in person and striking wise he is very impressive but I think if Marquardt can stay out of the clinch he can win this title.

Sean Sherk (-260) vs. Hermes Franca (+215) – The muscle shark will rock Franca.

Tito Ortiz (-125) vs. Rashad Evans (+110) – I bet 500$ on Evans at even money last month in vegas.. I plan on cashing in this winning ticket when I am back in vegas on the 27th of July.

I expect Tito to look like a bitch in this fight. I predict 2nd round knockout of Oritz.

I don’t really follow UFC (but do watch it), but I’d definitely hang out and watch it at a Hooters or something. You mean Saturday night? I think my flight comes in at like 8 or 9.

ufc and hooters? we should hang, you’ve nailed the top two things my wife and I like to do :)

tito losing to rashad seems silly though, he’s done very well, but to me he *always* seemed like a total hack. tito has up and downs, but he ain’t no hack.

Tito Ortiz – Either you love him or you hate him. I hate him. But that lucky loser from the tv show doesn’t have a shot

If you need someone to show you around while in Miami hit me up. I live here and know where Hooters is.

If you aren’t watching UFC at a bar with a couple drinks in you, you aren’t getting the full experience :)

Btw, Tito should quit while he’s behind.

Yup used to hate Tito thought he was arrogant but then watching him coach on Ultimate Fighter changed my mind. That’s the thing with UFC you just never know, that one punch can flip everything on its head.

I like Rashad, but I really don’t think he’ll make it. Up until recently, he outlasted his opponents and would win on decision. I think Tito will win, 2nd round, ref will have to end the fight from a ground and pound.

Man this will be a great weekend. Ive been looking foward to these fights. Great Beer Friends and Fights. Sean Sherk is a beast and its been a while sense Ortiz has faught so that should be interesting. I wonder how motovated he is now that he is dating Jenna Jameson

A knockout of Oritz in the second round? C’mon…give him at least a few more rounds than that?

Nice picks, but Ortiz will be too much for Evans. The Edgar vs Bocek fight should be excellent as well and hopefully it makes it onto the PPV.

It will only be a 3 round fight…

This fight card is awesome! I have my money on Evans. I was almost going to go… but couldn’t get it together to make the trip. Maybe UFC 74 in Vegas would be in order.

I train at the same MMA gym as Sherk. Can’t wait to see his fight with Hermes!

Rashad is just a glorified wrestler. His ground and pound is weak and does not have any knock out power. His high kick against Salmon was a lucky fluke. Plus Rashad’s cardio can not even compare to Tito’s. Tito wins second round due to ref stopage from insane ground and pound.

Shark’s takin’ out Franca for sure! Tito’s fight will be interesting…

If Chuck couldn’t knock out Tito, what makes you think Rashad is going to knock out Tito? One big head kick from Rashad, and all of a sudden he’s a knockout artist. Everyone underestimates Tito, I wouldn’t be surprised if Tito takes a victory here.

I’m kind of hoping that Tito loses, but if he takes Rashad down it’s all over

Reply

26 Paul Bradish July 6, 2007 at 3:40 pm

Well, I think that Rashad is a hell of a lot better than you seem to think he is – and anyone with a few months of boxing or muay thai has definate KO power (or should), but I will say that 8 of his 13 pro fights have ended via decision so I’m not really excited about this fight. I think it will go to the decision again (Tito gets the nod).

I think this will go the distance. If Evans can get some take downs and be controlling, I can see it going the whole way. Unless Tito catches him with some nice shots.

Sorry Shoe, I disagree on a couple of your pics:

1. Silva will beat Nate. People still don’t get how lethal Silva is for some reason. Vicious striker and he has good submission skills.

The dudes muay tai clinch is like a pit bull lock. His slight build fools people into thinking he’s not that strong. Remember Rich Franklin couldn’t get loose and he’s one of the strongest guys in the class.

2. Hermes is gonna win, imo. Muscle shark just doesn’t impress me.

Lastly, I AM A HUGE RASHAD EVANS FAN, but this will be his first real high level opponent. I’m pulling for Rashad, but my gut says Tito will win this one. (I hope i’m wrong of course).

The key here is if Rashad doesn’t catch Tito, can he handle the adversity that ultimately comes in a fighters MMA career. Evans hasn’t really faced that as all the top champions have.

If he does beat Tito, Evans goes right to the top of the class for a title shot.

Dude, obviously you didn’t watch UFC 66. Chuck TKO’d Tito!

Rashad a glorified wrestler?.. who cares!

So was Randy Couture, Dan Severn (both hall of famers) and Matt Hughes! Heck, Chuck Liddell was a college wrestler like Rashad was. Guys come to MMA from a wrestling background and they evolve.

Go back and watch Coutour’s first UFC fight. It’s was like watching a college wrestling match.

Rashad is a young fighter with outstanding athleticism who needes time to evolve as a complete mixed martial artist. His upside is tremendous and cannot be denied whether we like him or not. Additionally, his punching power is ‘good’ especially for a guy who was wrestling a few years ago.

EVERYONE looses at some point in MMA. Rashad will have his day, and this may be it. But, Rashad has nothing to loose and everything to gain.

Tito on the otherhand, will loose a whole bunch if he looses this fight.

Evans goes to the top for a title shot? Thats hilarious… for what? Beating Tito…

There’s so many more accomplished guys coming from PRIDE that Evans has several more BIG names to beat before he gets a shot.

Oh gosh… I’m so envious!!! I’d love to see this fight night. I’m mostly with you, BUT I think that Anderson Silva will beat Nate Marquardt and that Tito Ortiz is gonna win. Wish you a great night!

Shoe,

I know this isn’t the right place to contact you at regarding this but your contact form is broken and so is the SERP tool. I was just wondering what was going on. Thanks man!

Also I think Tito is going to wreck Rasahad and that Sherk is going to tool Hermes. I’m surprised to hear that Bonnar is fighting. That’s pretty cool tool. Thanks man!

TKO by strikes, is not the same as a knockout. Learn some MMA before you start running your mouth.

Did you watch UFC 56? If you did, you’d know that Nate Quarry got a title shot against Rich Franklin rather quickly. What did Quarry do to deserve that shot? Hurt his ankle on ultimate fighter?..

Did Joe “I loose big fights” Riggs deserve his title shot against Matt Hughes? Heck no, but life isn’t fair.

Heck, look at what Franca had to accomplish before getting a whif at a title shot. Not fair, but that’s the way it is.

The reality is that title shots go to who’s hot all the time in the fight game, especially in MMA.

Rashad is riding high right now. If he wins this fight big (which I doubt), being that his popularity is high and he’s undefeated, I wouldn’t be suprised if he got a title shot.

Bro, it happens. Nothing new..

ROFLMBO! This is so dumb, but i’ll play along..

Since you’re part of the MMA elite here’s simple quiz for ya: If Billy has 10 wins, 3 by TKO and 1 by knocking some dude out cold, and zero losses…

How will his record be announced & recorded:
a) 10-0-4
or
b) 10-0-3-1

If you’re having a hard time with this, here a cheat sheet for ya:
